Kylie West Mrs. Tibbetts English 9H3 25 February 2016 Is Animal Testing Inhumane? Animal testing is a very sensitive subject for some and for others not much thought goes into it. The tests performed on these animals continue to be horrifying. There are several points to support that, but some animal research has helped in medical situations. Long tests, horrific deaths, horrible laboratory conditions , medical advances and the alternatives all contribute to the changing of animal research forever. The tests used for the research are appalling. Both cosmetic and medical tests are very similar. Animals are forced to eat, inhale and ingest certain products. They experience exposure to harsh drugs and chemicals. Animals go through painful …show more content…
“In the United states, about 21,578 cats, 64,930 dogs, 213,029 guinea pigs, 145,895 hamsters, 126 marine mammals, 71,317 primates, 53,260 pigs, 38,008 other farm animals, 210,172 rabbits, 13,271 sheep, and 303,107 other animals are used for research, testing, and education.” (“Should Animals Be Used”). “In the United states, each year about 100 million animals are killed resulting in animal testing”(“Experiments on Animals”). Animals are becoming more endangered, because animal testing has been used more in the 21st century. Most people do not know the numbers or what animals are being used. These numbers are immense and perhaps with public education could be brought down …show more content…
Animals are caged in metal cages for long periods of time. After painful procedures, they are put into cages without painkillers. If the animals do not die during testing, they die in their cages. High stages of depression and stress develop in these animals. The animals shiver in fear when people walk around their cages. The studies done on caged animals are not accurate, because their mental states are all over the place. For example, if a scientist was doing a study on depression the animal's mental state would be an issue. The results of the test could be incorrect, because the animal already suffered from mental issues. There are several alternatives to animal testing. Cruelty free beauty products are good for the environment and the people using them. They are free of harsh chemicals that irritate human skin and do not disintegrate. “Bath & Body Works, Clean Kids Naturally, LUSH Cosmetics, Murad, Too Faced Cosmetics, and Trader Joe’s Company are all cruelty free products”(“Companies That Don’t Test”). Products like these provide safe and healthy skin for people and help with environmental damages caused by
The information that animals have provided scientists over the past decades has changed society, and is still changing society for the better. Millions of lives have been saved with the use of animal testing and many more will be saved with continued research. However, there are many who dismiss this monumental achievement completely and oppose the use of animals in laboratory research. Though many find this practice to be
Without animal research, cures for such diseases as typhoid, diphtheria, and polio might never have existed. Without animal research, the development of antibiotics and insulin would have been delayed. Without animal research, many human beings would now be dead. However, because of animal testing, 200,000 dogs, 50,000 cats, 60,000 primates, 1.5 million hamsters, and uncounted millions of rats and mice are experimented upon and die each year, as living fodder for the great human scientific machine. Some would say that animal research is an integral part of progress; unfortunately, this is often true. On the whole, animal testing is a necessary evil that should be reduced and eliminated whenever possible.
Over 100 Million animals are burned, crippled, poisoned and abused in testing Labs every year. Animals are used to test the safety of products, advance scientific research, and develop models to study disease and to develop new medical treatments all for the sake of mankind. Animals should not be used for scientific research because animal testing is inhumane, other testing methods now exist, and animals are very different from human beings.
Millions of animals are being unneedlessly tested on for cosmetics, even though there are plenty of alternatives available and most of the results are unreliable or not applicable to humans. Although the fight against animal testing has made huge progress recently, America has yet to stop this cruel practice and chooses to torture animals while other countries are making a stop to the testing (“Animal Testing 101”).
Sadly according to the Humane Society International (HSI) article About Animal Testing “in the United states alone around 26 million animals are tested each year for medical and commercial research” (HSI) even though animal testing is not required to ensure that the cosmetic being sold are safe. From those 26 million animals being tested most are not protected by the federal Animal Welfare Act. The animal welfare act does not include birds, rats and mice bred for research, and it doesn’t include cold-blooded animals. Animals testing should be banned because the animals tested suffer immensely, also animal tested is unethical, and because there are many alternatives.
Every year about 100 million animals suffer through being poisoned, shocked, and burned for unsuccessful medical research. Some may believe that animal testing is a crucial part to medical research and should be used more frequently. Others believe the pain and suffering inflicted upon the animals is morally wrong and should not be done, no matter what benefits come from it.
Hundreds and millions of animals are killed everyday due to animal testing. The number of animal deaths in labs have halved since the 1970’s. An animal dies in a Canadian lab every 16 seconds! The contemporary scale of animal deaths due to animal testing is unacceptable! 17-22 million animals are tested on each year and at least half are put to death. 2.5 million animals are killed due to animal testing at the Great Britain Zoo every year. Animal testing essentially involves harming or killing the animals, every year so many innocent animals are put to death on behalf of our a...
The Cruelty of Cosmetic Testing on Animals Each year, thousands of animals are brutally tortured in laboratories, in the name of cosmetic research. A movement to ban animal testing for cosmetic purposes has been gaining popularity, with many companies hopping on the bandwagon against this research. New alternatives have been developed to eliminate the need to test on animals. This is only a small beginning of what is necessary to end these immoral acts. Animal testing in cosmetics is useless and cruel, and can be accomplished by other methods of research to end the suffering of animals.
Animal testing has long played a part in the science of testing, and it still plays a very important role in the medical world. Testing on animals in order to create a cure for AIDS is one thing, but testing on animals for human vanity is another. Animal testing is used to test the safety of a product. It has kept some very unsafe substances out of the cosmetic world. However, in this day in age, animal testing is not the only way to test the safety of a product. Animal testing in cosmetics has decreased over the years. However, it is still used by many companies in America. Animal testing is not only cruel, but it is also unnecessary in today’s advanced scientific world.
Animal testing is cruel and unnecessary especially for cosmetic use. There is over a thousand ingredients that have been mark as safe for humans so there is no reason for animal testing. There are many alternatives for animal testing that are cheaper and give valid results, there are places like Europe that have ban animal testing and doesn’t not buy cosmetics from other places if they have been tested on animals. Since is not legally required to test cosmetics on animals, cosmetics companies have a choice to choose, but usually choose to experiment on animals. Many animals have dies or are seriously injured for the cause of animal testing and some animals that have been born in the labs haven’t even seen daylight in their life. There has been many reports of animal cruelty in these lab and some have been shut down for that reason. If there is many animals in this world that are being extinct, why speed up the process with other species by using them as experiments and killing
Hundreds of millions of animals die every year from animal testing in the United States. Innocent animals are used everyday in laboratories for biology advancements, medical training, curiosity-driven experimentation, and chemical, drug, food, and cosmetic testing. They are used to provide information to make better products that are safe for human use. Although animal experimentation has some benefits, the negatives outweigh the positives. Animal testing is killing off innocent beings for the possible human benefit, and with modern technology, there are alternative ways to test products that leave animals unharmed.
...rking has also empowered the traditional activists, like PETA (People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals). PETA is supporting cruelty free companies through their Beauty Without Bunnies Program. When you see their bunny logo, you know the product you are considering is cruelty-free. And, anyone with access to the internet can easily check their website at http://www.mediapeta.com/peta/PDF/companiesdonttest.pdf to find out if a cosmetic company they are interested in is complying with alternative testing or traditional animal testing. Companies currently producing cruelty-free cosmetics include: Lush Cosmetics, Affordable Mineral Makeup, 2nd love cosmetics, Bare Essentials, etc. And new ones keep on popping up. So, the solution is at hand with alternative testing and insisting that companies continue to develop testing methodologies that don’t involve live animals.
Every year thousands of animals are euthanized due to animal testing such as cosmetic testing, medical testing, and dissection. (A Critical Look at Animal Experimentation) (Types of Animal Testing) Some of the things we use every day such as; make up, soap, furniture polish, and varieties of cleaning supplies, are tested on rabbits, guinea pigs, dogs, cats, and other animals. (Animal Testing) Cosmetic testing is used to test a product and its ingredients, medical testing finds cures for different illnesses; and dissection is used to help high school students in science classes have a better understanding of the class or students undergoing the medical field in college. (Animal Experimentation) Animal testing is not required by law; it is only used to protect companies from consumer lawsuits, provided new research for diseases, and provide a visual learning experiment for students. (A Critical Look at Animal Experimentation) It has been proven that there are more reliable and less expensive alternatives to animal testing, such as; computer models and cell and tissue tests. Animal experimentation should be eliminated because it is an inhumane method for testing purposes.
On average, American women use twelve personal care products a day making product safety one of the most important aspects in cosmetics. In www.animalsaustralia.org it states companies such as Avon, Dove, and Hugo Boss are known industries that use animal testing for their products. Millions of people around the world use these products for their cosmetic needs and if these corporations decided not to run their test to ensure the safety of the item they’re selling it would result in harm for everyone using that product. The science journal “Nature” ran a poll in 2011 consisting of nearly 1,000 biomedical scientists that found more than ninety percent of the scientists agreed that animal research is essential to the advancement of cosmetic research. Animal testing is required to discover whether a product is safe to release to the public. Without the use of animals to conduct research experiments, scientist would have to take an educated guess on if the product is safe to use. With animals, the companies are able to conduct trial and error test to learn more about their product and ensure that the consumer will be safe when the product is used. A human’s life has proven to be far more valuable than the life of a rodent. By conducting these experiments we’re improving our health by eliminating the risk of being exposed to fatal toxins or chemicals. Animal testing has been viewed as a mistreatment of
Animal testing hasn’t been beneficiary towards any scientific breakthrough or discovery. Elias Zourhini says, “Animal testing has been useless” he is one of the main people who are strongly making a push to try and stop animal testing as a whole. “There have been thousands of dead and injured animals in the past years or so and there has been any reward or safety ensured because of these animals. Animals have been being used for testing for many years now, and especially now, the number of animals that are being used to be experimented on are extremely high. However, you may not know that laboratories aren’t required to publish how many animals they used or how many experiments conducted. Maybe that would help to find out especially what animals need to be strongly protected against testing. “Every laboratory should publish an annual statement setting forth plainly the number and kind of experiments and the methods of conducting them” (Gould qd. in Leffingwell 211). This would help many things and especially organizations that are protesting, to give reasons and facts about testing. Animals are used and then unaccounted for. Truly, you may never know h...
