Lush Animal Testing Essay

Lush is a popular store known for their fresh handmade cosmetics, but they’re mainly known for their beliefs. Lush is one of the many companies that stand against animal cruelty. According to Lush roughly 20,000 established cosmetics ingredients have already been deemed as safe, so they believe there is no reason for animal testing. In 2012 Lush sponsored a protest that put a volunteer through a 10- hour experience of different types of animal testing in front of a crowd in a lush store. According to The Daily Athenaeum the volunteer had irritants placed in her eyes, her hair shaved off and her mouth forced open for feeding, mimicking the procedures that many animals have to endure. Lush did this representation to show the crowed what millions of animals go through and sufferer during experimental test. They believe that animal have rights and they don’t deserve to suffer, be mistreated or die for a

science experiment.
“Animal testing is a procedures performed on living animals for purposes of research into basic biology and disease, checking the effectiveness of new medication, chemicals, cosmetics, and food.” Animal testing has been has been around for centuries. Aristotle and Erasistratus were Greek physician-scientists and performed experiments on living animals around mid-300 BC. This shows that animal testing has gone on for years and it is still used in are time. More than 100 million animals have killed in the U.S. According to “People for the Ethical Treatments of Animas” also known as PETA stated that in the 100 million animals killed consist of mice, rats, dogs, cats, rabbits, hamsters, guinea pigs, monkeys, fish and birds. Scientists have said that around 92% of experimental drugs that have been proven successful in animal don’t work in humans. There used to be a requirement to have new drugs, cosmetics, or food tested on animals before they were tested on humans or even sold to the public, but it’s not legally required to test on animals on this present time although animals are still being test subjects. This has been going on for a long time, so animal testing for cosmetics should be stop.
When it comes to animal testing for cosmetics there is a lot of debate. Some people are certain that is an excellent thing to do when it comes to cosmetics. The reason being is because animal testing make sure products are safe for humans. Most cosmetics such as lotions, make-up, shaving creams, shampoos and more are tested on animal before being tested on humans to make sure they are safe. The other reasons people think is okay to use animals is because they have a shorter life span than humans. Scientist have stated that animals make a good test subject because, they have a short lifespan and reproduce quickly so they can monitor them for their entire life and see if they passed any effects to their offspring. If it wasn’t for animal testing a large population of humans would die or been seriously injured.
When it comes to animal testing a group of people believe there is no debate at all.

Animal testing is cruel and unnecessary especially for cosmetic use. There is over a thousand ingredients that have been mark as safe for humans so there is no reason for animal testing. There are many alternatives for animal testing that are cheaper and give valid results, there are places like Europe that have ban animal testing and doesn’t not buy cosmetics from other places if they have been tested on animals. Since is not legally required to test cosmetics on animals, cosmetics companies have a choice to choose, but usually choose to experiment on animals. Many animals have dies or are seriously injured for the cause of animal testing and some animals that have been born in the labs haven’t even seen daylight in their life. There has been many reports of animal cruelty in these lab and some have been shut down for that reason. If there is many animals in this world that are being extinct, why speed up the process with other species by using them as experiments and killing

them.
Americans use on the average of $50 million dollars a year in cosmetics. Do you ever wonder what cosmetic companies put in this lipstick to stay on for a whole day? Manly long lasting cosmetics have formaldehyde, the same ingredient as in nail polish that is known to cause cancer. There is many cosmetic companies so the race to see who the best is always on. To stay popular now in days many cosmetics companies come up with new make-up such as long lasting, matte, shine, and many more. But since many companies offer the same thing they compete to see whose is best. So what do they use you may ask, toxic ingredients. Most people would disagree and say cosmetic companies wouldn’t do that, or the FDA wouldn’t allow it, or say that they don’t see any damage being done by using make-up so they ignore it. But with time the cosmetics you use every day can lead you to health problems. While there is many safe ingredients that can be use, some cosmetics companies decide to use animals to test other ingredients for “better” cosmetics.
Animal testing has been going on for centuries but most people decide to ignore it. Lush as well has other companies have stopped and stand against animal testing, because thy believe animals have rights. Over a million animals have died in US for cosmetics research, even though there is over a thousand ingredients mark as safe for humans. Cosmetic companies should label their products saying “this have been tested on animal” for the customer to knowledge animal testing and choose if they would like to support that companies decision.
