Animal Testing Inhumane

¨[M]ice are mice, and people are people. If we look to the mouse to model every aspect of the disease for man, and to model cures, we’re just wasting our time” says Dr. Clifton E. Barry, chief of the Tuberculosis Research Section at the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases. Animal testing has been used for decades in order to test our products on living species, varying from monkeys to rats. Many familiar companies like windex, clorox, and febreze test their products on animals, which can have serious effects. Animal testing should be banned because it is cruel and inhumane, it is futile due to the lack of human relevancy, and there are alternative options.

Due to the tests being barbarous and inhumane, animal testing should

not be allowed. Many animals are exposed to harsh products or treatments during these tests:
According to Humane Society International, animals used in experiments are commonly subjected to force feeding, forced inhalation, food and water deprivation, prolonged periods of physical restraint, the infliction of burns and other wounds to study the healing process, the infliction of pain to study its effects and remedies, and ‘killing by carbon dioxide asphyxiation, neck-breaking, decapitation, or other means’ (ProCon Researchers n.pag.).
The animals are being deprived basic needs such as not eating for days in order to consume a certain product, or not being given water for days on end in order to test the need of water in living organisms.

Also, the animals often undergo extreme pain and suffering, like breaking an arm or leg, as researchers inflict pain on them to test remedies, often times ending in lost lives. Correspondingly, many animals in the United States are subjected to this torture: “More than 100 million animals suffer and die in the U.S. every year in cruel chemical, drug, food, and cosmetics tests as well as in medical training exercises and curiosity-driven medical experiments at universities” (Peta n.pag.). The large number of animals in the United States dying per year is extensive and outstanding, considering most of the animals die due to the harsh chemicals or body experiments. The animal tests are done for a variety of experiments, but the amount of lost lives outweighs any of the benefits of these tests. 100 million animals dying per year from these serious tests shows how immense the issue is. Supporters of animal testing would argue that the safety of humans is more important than animals, so if the animals are dying, at least it is not humans. Although this may be true, according to ProCon.org, “The anatomic, metabolic, and cellular differences between animals and people make animals poor models for human beings” (ProCon Researchers n.pag.). Testing on the animals proves to lack actual results that can help scientists to create a helpful product or drug because the anatomies of humans and animals are very different, and they react in different ways. Henceforth, testing on animals should not be

allowed.
Animal testing should be banned because the experiments are useless due to the lack of human relevancy. Many scientists have been able to cure diseases within animals, but lacks a solution for those same diseases within humans: “The history of cancer research has been a history of curing cancer in the mouse. We have cured mice of cancer for decades and it simply didn’t work in humans” (Klausner n.pag.). For many generations, experimenters have been able to cure many serious types of diseases within animals, such as cancer, rabies, tetanus, and more, but in many cases, the experimenters often find solutions for animals that do not work within the human body. Scientists spend a lot of time, money, and animal lives on experimenting with cures for diseases, but they often are pointless due to the ineffectiveness in humans, proving these experiments to be irrelevant to the better of humans. Correspondingly, many of the drug trials that successfully treated animals fail in human trials: “Currently nine out of ten experimental drugs fail in clinical studies because we cannot accurately predict how they will behave in people based on laboratory and animal studies” (Leavitt n.pag.). The majority of trials that passed within animals fail within humans because experimenters and scientists cannot anticipate how the human body will react without testing it on humans first. In the light of that, animal testing is futile because in order to test how the drug or product will react on or in the human body, scientists must test it on humans, not animals.
Due to the alternative tests that can be done to save animal sufferings and lives, animal experimentation should be banned. Other tests can be done in order to trial drugs and products: “In vitro (in glass) testing, such as studying cell cultures in a petri dish, can produce more relevant results than animal testing because human cells can be used” (ProCon Researchers n.pag.). By using human cells to test drugs, antibiotics, or products that will be used on humans, scientists are able to receive more authentic results because the cells come from humans. Testing on animals often gives results that may only help to predict how humans react, but through the use of in vitro testing, scientists and examiners will know and understand exactly how the human body will react to the products, and no living creature is harmed in the process. Furthermore, many other options for testing these products can be used in place of animal testing: “Forward-thinking scientists have developed humane, modern, and effective non-animal research methods, including human-based microdosing, in vitro technology, human-patient simulators, and sophisticated computer modeling, that are cheaper, faster, and more accurate than animal tests” (Peta n.pag.). Due to the variety of test options that can be carried out, animal testing is not needed. Many of these testing types can prove to be more accurate and predict more about the reactions that occur with each drug or product being tested. Although some of the options include high-tech tests, they are still very accurate and useful because they help to predict the exact outcome of each drug. Out of all the possible research methods, animal testing has proved to be futile because rather than causing pain and suffering amongst animals, there are a wide variety of other tests than can be done.
Animal testing should not be allowed because there are other testing options, they are inhumane, and they are irrelevant to humans, thus unimportant. Millions of animals each year are victims of animal testing in the United States, most often times leading to death or extreme suffrage, such as broken limbs or chemicals inserted into their eyes. However, there are a vast number of alternative tests such as in vitro testing and computer generated testing. Furthermore, animal testing pertains only to animal’s reactions to different products and drugs, not human’s reactions. This proves animal testing to be unimportant because they often have no relation to humans. Ultimately, scientists who use rats and other animals as test subjects to help cure diseases are misspending their time.
