Would a person like it if they sat in a cage way to small for them for their entire life? Farm animals face this problem and much more every day. Farm animals are severely abused, they don’t produce as much as they should, and there are many things that we can do to help save farm animals from this treatment. Farm animals suffer from many types of abuse, many of them illegal and horrific. “Battery-caged hens are typically provided with a meager 61 square inches of space in which to live-- that’s less than the size of this page.” (Mercyforanimals.org, 2007) This author writes this to inform the reader of some of what types of abuse these farm animals suffer from. “Despite being one of the most popular companion animals in the country, rabbits are among the most exploited. Domestic rabbits-- cherished for their gentle, playful natures-- are skinned for their fur, blinded to test cosmetics, and raised by breeders motivated by profit.” (Mercyforanimals.org, 2007) What this author is saying to inform their readers is that even lovable animals like bunnies are being slaughtered for profit. Farm animals are skinned, gassed, trapped, electrocuted, clubbed, and drowned to collect fur for our everyday things. These treatments are cruel and if they were forced upon a dog or a cat, it would be illegal. Farm animals may also face painful physical mutilations without any anesthesia. Not only are chickens confined, but so are other farm animals, such as calves. Calves raised for veal are kept in crates so small and narrow that they aren’t even able to turn around, much less live. In order to change how these animals are treated, we have to get important people in the law involved. Letting important people, such as state legislators and representatives will help change the way they are treated because they can help change the laws and persuade the minds of the people. “Let your state legislators know that legal protections for all animals are important and that undercover whistleblower investigations are vital to policing the industry.” (Animal Legal Defense Fund, 2018) Letting these legislators know about this and having them help with this investigation will help these animals by discussing the problems and finding better solutions. Some of the problems we can bring up to these state legislators are that all farm animals deserve the same laws and rights as cats and dogs. We can expose the truth. We can let the people know how the food they are eating is treated in its last moments of life, and possibly change their minds about what they consume that comes from animals.
