Animal Abuse Research Paper

An animal is abused every 10 seconds (SOURCE). The abuse needs to stop. These animals are with us for their entire lives, while they are only with us for a part of our life. They are being tortured in experimental labs, at farms, and even at houses. Animals are getting abused all over the world, and if we work together to help the Animals Rights Movement, we can help animals everywhere.

First off, yes, animals can’t speak or reason ,but they still suffer and are sentient like anything or anyone else. The animals in factory farms, experimental labs and even at home all suffer from domestic violence. The LD50 test and Draize test are two awful tests being used on animals. The Draize test is used on rabbits and is when a cosmetic company puts

their product into the eyes of the rabbits. The LD50 test which also stands for Lethal Dose 50% is when a dose of whatever they were making is lethal to 50% of the group.

So many animals have went through these tests and have to suffer from the effects from these tests. Animals from the Draize test have gone blind and have to live the rest of their terrible lives blind and painfully. Also, animals from the LD50 test go through extreme and excruciating pain just in the beginning of the test. The other 50% of animals that do make it alive eventually die from having seizures, convulsions and start to lose the ability to move. Animals in any of these tests will suffer until their lives are over.

Next, is the history of the movement. Prevention of cruelty to animals became an important movement in early 19th Century England, where it grew alongside the humanitarian current that advanced human rights, including the anti-slavery movement and later the movement for woman suffrage (Walls). The Society of Prevention of Cruelty to Animals was created in 1822 by Colonel Richard Martin. Since he created this group in Britain the people of America followed. Henry Bergh created the American SPCA in 1866 in New York. The SPCA and humane societies like it started spreading and were founded first around Pennsylvania, Massachusetts, and San Francisco (Walls). In late 1950s - late 1960s ,three

other groups were formed; a group that later became the International Society for Animal rights, a Fund for Animals, and also the Animal Protection Institute. For the Animal Rights activists to get anywhere with their demands they had to borrow some tactics the other movements were using to oppose experiments on animals, wearing fur, factory farms and hunting. To raise more awareness to this movement a group called PETA was created in 1980. “PETA” stands for “People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals.” Also, it became the most visible representation of the Animal Rights Movement. Around the 1970s and the 1980s there were several animal protection victories due to many animal rights groups joining together to create a coalition (Walls).The Coalition with over 400 groups tried to stop the Draize Rabbit Blinding Test. They got big cosmetic companies to switch to alternatives but there are still some today that use the Draize Test. The Coalition next took on the challenge of opposing the LD50 test many years later. The Food and Drug Administration reviewed their policy and acknowledged the test could be replaced by cell biology and other techniques. Again, the LD50 test is still being used today but the number of animals in a group being tested on has been decreased massively. To this day there is still heavy competition for niches in animal experimentation, farm animals, zoos, hunting, circuses, fur and also animal testing (Walls). The Animals Rights Movement has come a long way since starting in the 1860s but there are still more actions to take for the protection of animals.
