One of the first and simplest emotions in the human mind, is curiosity. As an only child, I embraced this mantra and learned to develop ways to entertain myself through drawing, investigating, and building. I developed insight into how seemingly complex things worked, understanding that learning was to precede any ambition I had. I can vividly recall the first home computer that my parents purchased. Both, through self-caused and spontaneous events, the PC would fault, and my parents would become frustrated. To help, I researched and learned to troubleshoot problems that arose, and acquired computer hardware and software expertise that I later parlayed into a computer analyst position at Kimberly Clark Corporation. My first memorable exposure to the field involved a VATS lobectomy at my hometown hospital. Dissection of severe parenchymal adhesions surrounding the pulmonary vasculature resulted in an acute hemorrhage that required urgent and lifesaving intervention. I admired how the anesthesiologist showed confidence and skill showcasing dexterity and leadership while demonstrating a thorough understanding of physiology and pharmacology. I could relate to the tortuous hours of trial and error ... and, to this end, I knew that anesthesiology was perfect for me. I continued submersion into anesthesia by participating in a clerkship elective where I became skilled in ventilator basics, airway management, and perioperative patient care. I particularly enjoyed the complexity of each case, requiring diagnostic precision and immediate results. The multitude of possibilities where an anesthesiologist’s abilities are needed, in many different settings, is something that also appeals to me. I have always have enjoyed working with my hands, and anesthesia allows me to demonstrate this skill in patient care. Additionally, the chance to provide for patients from all age groups with a variety of pathological states would permit me to maintain a broad diagnostic knowledge base. Simply, the patients and practitioners are a phenomenal group with whom to interact. In working with residents and faculty, I have developed an appreciation of the camaraderie that exists within the field. I believe that I possess the necessary skills and personality to succeed as an anesthesiologist. My demeanor is professional, with a calm, easygoing approach. My strength is kindness, and I enjoy brightening others through humor. To my wife’s dismay, my vice is food and football. My personal goal is to be a devoted husband and future father and my professional goal is to become a humble, skilled
