By 2020, according to a study by Georgetown University in 2012, the healthcare industry will create 5.6 million more jobs. The medical field is rapidly growing, and hospitals are always in need of more doctors and nurses. For every surgery, birth, and chemotherapy treatment, there are many doctors present, including anesthesiologists. My mom is an anesthesiologist, and she has inspired me to pursue a career in this field. Today, I will be informing you all as to what an anesthesiologist does, how to become one, skills that are needed, their salary, general information about nurse anesthetists, and why I want anesthesiology to be my career.
In general, according to Learn.org, anesthesiologists are trained physicians who administer sedation or anesthesia during surgery. They meet with patients before and after surgery to determine any side effects and to monitor their health. As stated by The American Association of Nurse Anesthetists, the main difference between an anesthesiologist and a CRNA is that when a CRNA administers anesthesia, it is considered the practice of nursing while when administered by an anesthesiologist, it is recognized as the practice of medicine. In order to become a nurse anesthetist, one must obtain a bachelor's degree in nursing and work a minimum of one year in an ICU or ER. The amount of schooling it takes to become a CRNA is substantially smaller than what it takes to become an anesthesiologist. While doing almost the same thing as an anesthesiologist, nurse anesthetists make an average of $158,900 as of 2014, according to the U.S. World & News Report. This lower pay takes in to consideration the smaller amount of student loans a CRNA will have to pay off due to the less required
