Adrianna Horn Period 4 November 21, 2016 Anesthesiologist How much do you know about the medical field? I didn’t know a whole bunch about it until I started digging deeper into my future. I have always known that I wanted to work in the medical field, I just didn’t know in which branch you could say. There are so many options you could choose from such as Cardiology, Neurology, Pediatrics, Geriatrics, and many more. The one that interests me the most is Anesthesiology. Wanting to be an anesthesiologist, I would have to think about the schools that offer what I am looking for, the education required, and what comes after schooling. Many different schools in Indiana and out of Indiana offer what I am looking for. Through my research …show more content…
I have found that Indiana University (IU) has a school of medicine. This would be ideal for me because I could live on campus but not be too far away from family and friends back home. IU has a five star ranking placing number thirty-ninth in the country. Their main program is medicine of course, and the tuition is relatively affordable. They have an acceptance rank of 7.6%. Another school that is one of the best in the country is John Hopkins. They are located in Baltimore, Maryland and have a five star ranking as well. The tuition there is a little bit but not much more than IU. There are less than five hundred students that attend John Hopkins School of Medicine as of 2016. Your GPA has to be between 3.70 and 4.00 to be even considered as a student. These are some tough schools to get into! When I am in high school, I will want to do very good in all of my math and science classes.
To become an anesthesiologist I will need to get a Bachelor's degree to start with. I can receive this by going to the college of my choice and completing the whole four years. When I am in college, I will want to get a degree in Natural Sciences. This essentially means that I will need to take most of my classes over physics, organic chemistry as well as inorganic chemistry, anatomy, and …show more content…
biology. Prior to specializing in anesthesiology, I will need to graduate from a four year Doctor of Medicine (MD) or Doctor of Osteopathy (DO) program at a medical school. These programs are extremely time consuming as you could imagine. The first two years of med school will build onto my knowledge of what I learned in college, such as physics or biology and will even add in more specialized sciences to the mix. As a med student, I will also take classes in biochemistry, microbiology, neuroscience, pharmacology, pathology, immunology, and behavioral science. During my first two years of medical school I will have my first patient contact. This means that I will learn how to conduct an examination and interviews. My second half of med school, or the remaining two years, will be spent primarily dedicated to clinical studies. This means that I will partake in four to twelve weeks of clinical rotations. Clinical rotations will serve as my “on the job introduction.” I will be introduced to various branches of the medical world such as pediatrics, geriatrics, oncology, neurology, and anesthesiology. What I mean by saying introduced to the branches of medicine, I am essentially saying that I will administer anesthesia under a supervisor to patients having surgery falling under those few categories and many more. I will be known as an intern and will work under attending physicians or, better known as residents. I will also interact with patients by performing examinations and coming up with the best idea for that certain patient and then I will propose the idea to my supervisor. Don’t worry, there is a bright side after all of that schooling! After I complete my first four years of college, receive my bachelor's degree, and go and get my MD from medical school, I finally will get to work in a hospital and become a resident. My first year will be a medical internship. This means that I will be one rank higher than an intern but will still work under supervision. The following next three years will be intense training in anesthesiology. As a resident I will diagnose and treat patients, participate in team meetings, known better as rounds, and present cases and research to my superior. After I am done with my four years of residency, I can go back to school for one more year and receive a speciality. I don’t have to specialize in something unless I only want to work with that type of care. This type of training is called a fellowship.
This means that I will choose a subset within anesthesiology. This will include branches such as pediatrics, geriatrics, neurologic, and cardiac care. If I don’t want to be tied down to just one subset, I can go on to be a general anesthesiologist and that means that I will work with all of those subsets and not just one. I personally, I want to work in general that way I can experience all of the subsets in one day! If I want to continue on in a speciality I would have to go to medical school for one year and pass an U.S. Medical and Licensing Examination (USMLE). For further certification, I would then have to go and retake my oral and written boards which is administered by the American Board of Anesthesiology
(ABA). Based on what I have told you in my research, you probably feel like you know just a little bit more about the medical field. Anesthesiology will indeed be a big factor in my future, but it won’t be the only one. I will have to think about my husband and kids. Becoming an anesthesiologist means that I won’t always be there for my family because I will have to work weekends and holidays. I am strongly passionate about what I have researched and I am committed to a life of an Anesthesiologist!
Brody, Michael, and Donald Martin. “The Role of Anesthesiologists.” Physicians Protecting Patients. N.p. N.d. Web. October 21, 2015. An anesthesiologist is a physician who has received at least 8 years of schooling and has completed a residency program dealing with anesthesiology. Now, a licensed physician, an anesthesiologist deals with the administration of anesthesia during many medical procedures, including surgical or obstetric procedures, and pain management for acute and chronic illnesses, or cancer related pain. Anesthesiologists are also in charge of “anesthesia care teams” that include the anesthesiologist, an anesthesia assistant, certified registered nurse anesthetist, and an anesthesia technician. As the leader of the care team, the anesthesiologist is responsible for assessing the patient before, during, and after medical procedures, as well as developing and monitoring performance and quality of practices and standards in regards to administering anesthesia. The entirety of
The journey of becoming an anesthesiologist is a long, drawn out process. After high school, 14 years of college and training is needed. The first step taken to pursue the career of an anesthesiologist starts as early as high school. It is recommended to take classes in high school that will be a benefit when planning for college classes. It is also advised to maintain a high GPA throughout high school. A high school diploma is required to obtain this occupation. In addition to high school, a four-year bachelor’s degree is required. These four years can also be known as undergraduate school. This is only the beginning of the lengthy journey that is necessary to practice anesthesiology.
The first question I expect to be asked by every interviewer is "why anesthesiology now?" In 2012, after 6 years of post-graduate training, I was thrilled and elated to finally became a board-certified pediatric hematologist/oncologist. Three years later, I am ready to go back to residency. Pediatric hematology/oncology was one of my earliest rotations as a third year medical student and I fell in love with the pathology and, of course, the kids. After that rotation, I, perhaps naively, didn 't give much thought to other specialties and focused solely on pediatrics, going on to complete my pediatrics residency at the University of Michigan, followed by fellowship at the University of Colorado. Now, three years after my transition into post-training practice, I have come to realize the realities of pediatric specialized medicine are not what I expected when I chose this career.
The career I plan on pursuing in life is becoming a certified medical assistant. Medical assisting is one of the fastest growing careers in healthcare. To become a certified medical assistant you will have to achieve a certification through the certifying board of the American Association of Medical Assistants (AAMA). While you can work as a medical assistant without being certified, employers are often looking for someone skilled and qualified.
The Healthcare Professional that I chose is a Dental Assistant. The reason why I chose to use a dental assistant as the Healthcare Professional was because I think that they are very important along with the dentists. Without dental assistants, dentist’s jobs would be more stressful than it already is in their job. Dental assistants greatly increase the efficiency of the dentist in the delivery of quality oral health care are valuable members of the dental care team.
To become a CRNA, you must first receive a bachelor’s degree in nursing and attain the licensure of a registered nurse. You must also have at least one year of critical care experience, which is obtained in areas such as the emergency room or intensive care units. Once you have received licensure and critical care experience, you have to be accepted into an accredited anesthesia program with a typical duration of two years or longer. Once you successfully complete the program, you then take the national certification examination. To become specialized in specific patient populations, such as pediatrics or trauma, you would need to work at a specialty hospital. As of right now, there are no scholarly programs to become certified in subspecialties. There has been recent discussion focused on changing the crit...
Many people rush through their daily life without contemplating their actions, thereby missing vast opportunities for achievement. They waste valuable time engaging in frivolous matters instead of putting their energies towards more productive and meaningful purposes. In the words of the Dalai Lama: “Life is not about acquiring money and other facilities; it is about dedicating your life to helping others as much as you can.” The immeasurable value of helping others has been engrained in me since childhood. As a result of my own difficult family circumstances, I have become more sensitive, kind and mindful towards others and their own situations. I have developed a passion for helping others, which, in combination with a proclivity towards medicine has lead to my descion to become a Physician Assistant. I want to live a life where I can provide healthcare and aid to anyone who needs.
With many medical careers students often get confused on what they really want to study, I have faced this problem myself and I know is not that easy due too many choices. There are many options ranging from healthcare to medical jobs. I have thoughtfully chosen to enter the program for Medical Assistant (MA). Ever since I was a child, I’ve spent most of childhood years at the Hospital, I was diagnosed with a rare condition that had to be treated continuously, this meant that I had to be going to checkups every three months so I was close to doctors, surgeons, nurses, anesthesiologist, medical assistants, etc. I remember at first I was frightened just of the thought of going to the doctor but after a few visits I got used to. The doctors and nurses were nice and caring and made me feel comfortable that I end up enjoying my doctor’s visits every time. Since then I decided I wanted to work in the medical field, this is my goal since I can remember. I have always enjoyed helping people in any way I possibly can. I chose to be a Medical Assistant because I think is great way to start my medical career going and programs are practical and not long.
My future career goal is to become an anesthesiologist. An anesthesiologist administers an anesthetic to patients before going into surgery. They also have to keep monitor of vital life signs and make sure everything in the body is functioning properly while under the anesthetic. I think being an anesthesiologist is something I’d enjoy being because I like being in control. I like making sure people are okay and that is specifically what anesthesiologists do; they make sure the patient can’t feel any pain and is comfortable during surgery.
In order for an anesthesiologist to give the right amount of anesthesia to a patient, he or she must be well educated about medicine and the human body. When discussing the education needed for anesthesiologists, the Arizona Career Information System states that interns must take the following courses: biology, dentistry, chemistry, business, and anatomy (“Anesthesiologist”). For one to complete all these courses it would be very time consuming, but in the long run it is beneficial because not only do anesthesiologists make so much money but they are very knowledgeable about many parts of the body. Also, learning about the sciences would be interesting and also help an anesthesiologist learn more about his or her life as well as the patients and know exactly what procedure would be taken during surgery. With only being able to prosper from these required courses, self-employed anesthesiologist would be on average making 300,000-450,000 while the salary for the ones who...
Out of hundreds of thousands of different jobs available in the country, the attractiveness of Anesthesiology has caught my attention. Ever since discovering the career and its rigorous requirements, I have been trying my hardest to achieve it. To become an Anesthesiologist requires dedication, responsibility and passion and I believe I acquire those assets. It requires demanding education and many years of pure dedication to have this occupation. University of Central Florida provides this requirement to become an Anesthesiologist, so I have decided to meticulously try my hardest to be admitted to this university.
My interest in anesthesia came about like the wounded path along a well traveled hiking trail, one of many that looks enticing and is just right, but didn't reveal itself until I got myself through the hurdles along the road. In anesthesia I am looking for a specialty that values quick thinking and detailed precision, a field with the right balance of intensity and patient interaction, and a career that can challenge me to perform at the top of my abilities.
Is Medical Assisting a great job for me in the future world? Medical assisting is a job that you help people with. This job includes things like taking blood samples, giving shots, check-ups, etc. Any interests I have had within this career is that you help others, prescribe medicine if they are in need, being prompt and taking care of others. Related talents to this career that I have is enjoying helping people, experiencing blood, doing regular check-ups etc. I have selected medical assisting as a career because its easy/ great training in under a year, employment growth, and flexible schedule. I believe that being a medical assisting is the best career for me.
An ob-gyn is what you probably refer to as just delivering babies but it’s a lot more then that. An obstetrician has to do with giving patients medicine, making sure a patient and the baby are healthy for a long nine months, being the one their for the delivery process, etc. To be an obstetrician/ gynecology, you have to go to school for quite some years but not just that also training classes. When in college learning to be an ob-gyn, you get to experience a lot of hands on things which is always fun! Last but not least before I begin to explain lots of things about an ob-gyn is that being an obstetrician takes a lot of work and effort but it entertains me more than any other career.
With so many jobs in the world it’s so hard to choose just one. Do you want to be an athlete or a doctor? You have to decide wisely because once you choose turning back is a difficult task. Being a surgeon is the job I want to have as an adult. Being a surgeon may be hard but in the long run it’s worth it. This career caught my attention as a kid. I would always watch these ER shows and see these crazy tasks that they would have to deal with, and through all that they’d be calm and collective. Seeing a surgeon save someone’s life inspires me to want to do the same thing. If I would have the ability to save someone’s life, it would allow me to see the world in a whole new way. Every year more than 15 million people in the U.S. have surgery. That being said the need for surgeons will never decrease, as there always will be a surgery to perform. A surgeon is always on call everyday of the year, they need to be able to perform under some of the most pressures situations. Five things one must understand when researching a career are: career description historical perspective, salary, training and education and career progression.
