And Then There Were None is a mystery novel written by Agatha Christie. 10 are here but they will fade, There minds cursed with there murderous way. All brought by the will of U.N. Owen who shall finish them without the others knowin. The effect of guilt on one's conscience is the major theme of And Then There Were None, there are several examples of how the theme is inferred by the actions of the character through the plot. One example of the theme is Emily Brent who is taxed with the memory of Beatrice Taylor and how she caused her death. Throughout the story until her death she reflects and remembers Beatrice Taylor’s death and multiple times she sees or think she hears Beatrice behind or near her. General Macarthur is the third to die and he has given up on the hope of making it off the island Vera speaks to him shortly before the time it is believed he was killed. During their short talk he states that he has accepted his fate and welcomes it, also the quotes “We're not going to leave the island … None of us will ever leave … It's the end, you see – the end of everything …” and “That's peace – real peace. To come to the end – not to have to go on … Yes, peace …” both show he's accepted his death and fate and that he knows he will not leave the island alive. On his way to the the island he hopes that when he meets his old military buddies don't remember the rumor that surrounded him this shows that he still has guilt about his dark past.
