This nonfictional, inspirational, and motivational work was written by Rob White. It reveals the myths Mr. White believed, and the realities he later discovered. Bob White, the focal character of the book, was born in small mill town where traditional norms hampered a lot of people from excitement and prosperity. While he grew up, he came across some people, “unexpected gurus,” who affected him positively with their extraordinary attitudes and words of wisdom, thereby changing his values and perspectives on life. Bob broke free from the bondage of tradition, attended college, became a school teacher, and later became a successful estate entrepreneur and restaurateur. This book of 195 pages, consists of short chapters that unveil life-transforming stories, which are written in the first-person point of view. Every chapter has a new experience to learn from, and the stories are unique and coherent. However, Urdang’s personal stories and common scenarios make it seem like the dilemmas are common and the mistakes are easy to make.

There are many lessons that we can get from this book, which the first thing is not to be biased and avoid being racism. In the movie “Dear White People” by Justin Simien addresses many different themes that the four black main characters had faced through the movie. He addresses white assimilation that Coco was doing because she did not like being Black and wanted to be White. It talks about racism by the opening credits of the movie with different recordings that suggest Blacks are being ghetto or not knowing the children father. It also dealing the stereotypes Whites thinks about Black by having a blackface theme party. It even dealt with the “acting black” theme that is still happening in today society.
The Seven Habits of Highly Effective People (Covey, 2004) has become the cornerstone of leadership and management wisdom. The habits emphasize personal responsibility and personal leadership. There is challenge in living everyday under the guidance of the habits but there is also great benefit as living the habits can influence everything we do in life. I was introduced to Covey’s seven habits through a one day seminar at my workplace several years ago. I learned some of the terminology and a few of the concepts but never really understood the power of the practical application of the habits. Reading the Covey materials has taught me that life is not about all the tasks that I accomplish but instead about accomplishing the tasks that support what is important to me. Covey has taught me that there are elemental components that are applicable across the many roles that I have in my life. Those universal elements are integrity, vision, discipline, and passion. Embracing these ideas has opened my eyes to the endless applications and benefits of living the seven habits.
Success is something individuals aim for through all stages of life. Succeeding at university may entail passing courses, achieving learning goals and consequently graduating, while gaining some experience and exposure. At work, success could take a different form of gaining a job, accomplishing goals, and seeking promotions. While the definition of success may differ for university students and employees at an organisation, the basic principles and skills required are very similar. Individuals require both intrapersonal and interpersonal perception in order to achieve success, whether at university or work. Skills such as self-regulation, self-monitoring, implementing goals and strategies to achieve those goals, as well as harnessing good communication skills and formal relationships are key factors to success. It is with these perceptions that individuals can gain skills that can help overcome barriers to succeed.

The academic journey from my childhood up to my ongoing college experience was an important role in defining who I am as an individual. Like any other person, I eventually gained the understanding and importance of essential qualities like time management, work ethic, developing strong mental mindset, and many other things throughout my years of education. Fortunately for me, I became aware of these things much earlier than my peers around me. However, being aware of these things was only a fraction towards success. Over time I’ve realized that the most critical part of success was gaining the discipline and willpower to apply these lessons and concepts.
According to the study of this course, I have learned many useful management skills and I feel like these skills will be applied to my future career development. When working on the self- assessment tests, I found myself fall into the category of the ISTJ personality types, which as illustrated by Myers Briggs, is the type of personality that is conscientious, considerate, and helpful. Personality traits such as honest, dutiful, practical and responsible are my strengths; personality traits such as stubborn, insensitive and poor communication skill are my weaknesses. Related to the knowledge I have learned in the course I believe both strengths and weakness will have influence to my future career development. In this reflection paper, I will demonstrate the strengths and weaknesses that may place the most influence on my way of success.
