I believe Ancient Greek Mythology is far more engaging for students. Of course, it’s my opinion, but after reading this you’ll agree with me. I believe Ancient Greek stories is better for three reasons : it gives more detail and background, you can learn a lesson or two.Plus ,it has more action and sometimes a twist. Most likely (hopefully) these three reasons will change your perspective of Ancient Greek being less interesting than modern day. My first reason is, the stories of Ancient Greek give a better understanding, and gives more of what’s what. For example, in the movie “Percy Jackson” , Mountain Olympus was supposedly “The Empire State Building”, when that is incorrect, in Ancient Greek Mythology Mountain Olympus is in Greece (tallest mountain where the gods live).Evenmore, the underworld is not located at the “Hollywood”sign but in Greece where there is a river called “River Styx”.As you can see, it would confuse the students, and give false information of the actual Greek Mythology. …show more content…
My second reason is the Ancient Greek Stories helps our minds open up to a new culture about what the Greeks believe in.
Not to mention, you learn some great lessons. For instance, in the story of “ Echo and Narcissus” . Hera cursed Narcissus to fall in love with himself , the lesson was to look at someone for not their looks, but what’s inside. Additionally, in the story “Pandora’s Box” Pandora didn’t listen to Athena about the box Zeus gave her, and let curiosity get to her leading to a terrible disaster for humans . The lesson was curiosity gets to people easily, which is relatable . As you see there's a lot of lessons in Ancient Greek stories that modern day doesn’t
have. My last reason is Ancient Greek tales (some) give a good twist and action than modern day. Such as the movie “Percy Jackson”in the movie Percy killed Medusa to protect his friends. Nevertheless, in the story of Ancient Greek Mythology, Perseus killed Medusa, by cutting her head for King Acrisius. EXCEPT, he killed the king at the end for protecting his mother with Medusa’s head which is a twist I didn't see coming. Along with other stories that have good twist, Perseus is just one of really interesting stories that has a twist . In the end, that’s why I conclude that Ancient Greek Mythology is more amusing than modern day. Not going to lie , yes modern day does have more of a visual of things, except it doesn’t give a really satisfying perspective on details and background follow by having mostly action and hardly a lesson to learn. It does have action ,but Ancient Greek tales have good detail of what’s happening along with a twist(some stories), which makes it more interesting. However, that’s my point of view and possibly I changed your opinion about which one is more better and interesting for a student. “Old myths, Old Gods, Old Heroes have Never died… “ ~Stanley Kunitz
The Odyssey was also very popular in it’s time. It was set in ancient Greece where in its culture; mythology was the heart of everyday life. The Greek Culture turned to mythology to explain different phenomena for which they had no scientific explanation and this was prominent in the epic the Odyssey.
The Epic of Gilgamesh and Homers Odyssey both feature strong characters with disastrous flaws meant to teach life lessons to the Mesopotamia and Greeks respectively. The Epic of Gilgamesh is told over eleven tablets and teaches lessons that include love is a motivational force, the importance of respecting the Gods, the power of friendship, and the inevitability of death. The Odyssey, an epic tale by Homer featured Odysseus and reinforced the lessons of the brain over brawn, self-control, pride, and perseverance to the Greeks.
In The Odyssey the ancient Greeks had a sense of explorations, independence and love life. They were skillful and wise men and women. They are depicted as courageous and adventurous heroes and warriors. Under all those beautiful characteristic illustrated in The Odyssey, under that shell that it portrayed, the ancient Greeks had many fears. They feared the sea, Cyclops, scared of scandals, death and people with different cultures. Ancient Greeks had all these fear because it turns out that they fear everything that could take their life. Life is a big deal for ancient Greeks, they love and appreciate their life and would do anything to protect it. Even though everything that could cause death was terrifying for the ancient Greeks, the scariest thing was the meddlesome of the gods.
...ure. This transition between myth and philosophy is very important because it allows for other great minds to learn from it and apply it to their own philosophical views. If this transition had not happened then we might still be basing our philosophy on supernatural and fictional explanations. It greatly increased our philosophical mindset years ahead. It also leads in to the Axial Age of Greece and served as the introduction period to kick off the real westernization of Greece. It also leads to Greece becoming a super center of learning and knowledge.
When you think of Ancient Greek culture and Modern American culture you wouldn’t automatically assume that they share very many things. When you think of Ancient Greece you may think of togas and Mount Olympus, but by defaulting to these things one overlooks the more important things that Greece gave the world, and America in particular.
It is always important to look to the past in order to move towards the future. This was done in the formation of Western Society, and more specifically the formation of American society. The Greek culture served as a frame of reference for many aspects of Western life including government, architecture, math and the arts. Ancient Greek culture served as a very broad base for our society to be built upon.
Roman vs. Greek Civilization Although both Roman and Greek civilizations shared similarities in the areas of art and literature, their differences were many and prominent. Their contrasting aspects rest mainly upon political systems and engineering progress, but there are also several small discrepancies that distinguish between these two societies. This essay will examine these differences and explain why, ultimately, Rome was the more advanced civilization of the two. Greece, originally ruled by an oligarchy ("rule of the few"), operated under the premise that those selected to rule were selected based not upon birth but instead upon wealth.
Mythology was very important to the men and women of ancient Greece. They worshipped the gods and goddesses, wrote poems about them, and based a great deal of art work off of them. The people of Greece looked to the gods and goddesses for help in all aspects of their lives; including health, agriculture, and war. Reading about Greek mythology can inform people about the society of Greece because the Greek gods were created by the people of Greece. Three main goddesses who were worshipped by the Greeks were Hera, Athena, and Aphrodite.
The basic structure of the ancient drama has to do with the concept of myth. Stories were based on myth or history. The moral of these kind of myths was that the beginning and the end of the human life must only be in the God's hands. The ancient Greeks believed that some humans could be forced by fate to act wrongly, even if they didn't want to.
I find the most fascinating of ancient writings to be Greek mythology. Writings produced by the early Greeks, in my opinion, even rival modern day literature. Hard to believe considering everything the human race has experienced and endured up to this point. With so many Greek tragedies, my favorite has to be "The Flight of Icarus."
Odyssey was also famous in its time. It was set in the ancient Greece where mythology was the heart of everyday life. This culture turned to myth to explaining phenomenon that they had no scientific explanations, and this was eminent in the epic the
Did you know that we are someone similar to some ancient people? Many things that we do or use today were actually created more than 2,000 years ago, in ancient times. There are many ancient civilizations that contributed to this, but I think that the Ancient Greek contributed the most to the modern world. They started the Olympics, theater, and democracy all of which we use today. Imagine how different our country’s government would be if the there were no democracy. All these inventions show that the Ancient Greek were very advanced for their time.
By comparing ancient Greek Olympic to modern day Olympic, it becomes clear that ancient Greek Olympic and modern day Olympic are slightly different. One different is the gender of the competitors. In Ancient Greek, the competitor must be a man only because the entire athlete is the heavy sports. Also, they have to train at Olympia for a month before the Games but for the modern Olympic, both man and woman can take part of the game because of the equality of human. The second things in which these two periods of time are different are the prize of the winner who won the competition. For the ancient Greek winner, the prize will be an Olive wreath because Greek believes that that the olive wreath was given by the hero Hercules as a reward for
The Greek literature is the most famous and unique literature around the globe. The uniqueness of Greek literature becomes obvious due to the imaginative ideas which nets out a play that gathers moral behaviours and religious aspects, and has all elements of an excellent play. Greeks put their stamps in many parts in literature; however, their obvious stamps were in writing poetry and drama which, in my opinion, haven’t been equaled or surpassed until this day. In the past, Greeks wrote masterpieces which then became an inspiration and an influence to a lot of writers and readers around the world. Furthermore, tragedies took big part of their culture which were created out of songs and performed at an open air theatre for
Writing, record keeping, and literature are cornerstones of civilization as we know it. Without our predecessors developing alphabets and grammar and recording what was going on around them, modern day humans would not know where they came from. Humans also, however, have a tendency to destroy history. While ancient humans created books and libraries, they destroyed just as many, if not more. Writing has proved a very important practice to societies throughout human history and although ancient literature and writings that have been preserved enhance modern civilization, the inherent pattern of destroying libraries and books has likely inhibited the progress of humanity to a certain extent, because conflicting societies in ancient times would
