Ancient civilization reached huge population, feeding their people from crops. The Inca Empire reached million of population, and the potato was one of the main food in their diet (Inca 1). Teaching small farmers, in developing countries, how to improve potato crops, using better irrigation techniques, and natural plague control, is a good way to eradicate the hunger in the world.

The education can be the solution to get more drinking water, avoid diseases, and at the same time provide better irrigation for the crops. Teaching how to construct water pumps and teaching how to make the water safe for health, are basic strategy to improve small farms in developing countries. Applying the new techniques for irrigation will help to improve the production in small farms. In Ireland, in 1845, the potato crops were infected with a fungus (brought by a commercial ship from the New World), and more than one million people died because of lack of food and contamination. (Pollen 230) The current industrialized potato crops are using an intensive pesticide treatment to keep the bugs and fungus under control. In some cases the pesticides and fertilizers are added to the irrigation systems, saving time and money. (Pollen 218). The nature always is resisting our control, as much the industry uses more pesticides, as much resistance are the bugs are developing. After some years, the bugs generate immunity to the pesticide and it is needed something stronger to kill them. (Pollen 219) For that reason, every day, is more dangerous to eat the industrialized produce. Sooner or later the chemical will be not enough to control the nature and it will became dangerous for the health. The organic farms have been successful crops potatoes with no chemicals or minimal use of them. Organics farms, by planting different varieties of potatoes, have been done possible to reduce the risk of plagues and fungus. This is as a result of consumer driven trends and pressure to minimise the environmental impact of viticulture.
As seen in the 1800s, relying on a single crop makes that crop vulnerable to disease, insects, competing plants, etc. One farmer he interviews says that “the bugs are always going to be smarter than we are,” which begs the larger question Pollan is attempting to answer: are we in control of nature or is nature in control of us (Pollan 144)? Organic foods are those grown without the use of growth hormones, antibiotics, synthetic pesticides, or chemical fertilizers. Genetically modifying crops is also not preformed in organic farming. Soil fertility can be maintained using crop rotation, cultivation practices, and cover crops. Natural fertilizers and pesticides are still considered to be included in organic farming (Winter & Davis, 2006). Products that are controlled with cultivation conditions rather than chemical-synthetic pesticides include organic products (Woese, Lange, Boess & Werner Bogl, 1999). The use of synthetic pesticides and materials falls under conventional farming. If the materials are on the National List of Allowed and Prohibited Substances, it can, however, be considered organic. A process that chemically changes a substance extracted from naturally occurring sources is considered a synthetic material (Winter & Davis, 2006).
For years organic farmers and conventional farmers have feuded over which is superior. Organic farmers argue that their product is more eco-friendly because they do not use the synthetic chemicals and fertilizers conventional farmer’s use. Conventional farmers argue that their product is healthier and yields more. People tend to have stereotypes regarding the two types of farmers. Organic farmers are usually thought of as liberal, hippy, tree-huggers while conventional farmers are usually thought of as right-wing, industrialists. Obviously, some do adhere to this stereotype, but a majority of these farmers are normal, hardworking people. Although these farmers, both believe in their methods, one is no better than the other. There are advantages and disadvantages to both, but there is no true superior method of crop farming.
Food security is one of the largest problems facing our world today. To be "food secure" a country must have enough food to feed its population and be capable of feeding its growing population in the future. About 700 million people today do not have enough food available to keep themselves healthy. They are plagued by hunger, malnutrition, disease, and death. One reason that many third world countries are not food secure is that they do not have the technology to keep up with the growth in population. For example, in many countries crop fields cannot be worked to their full potential. One way to help solve this problem is to bring unused machinery, which has been exceeded by our technology to these countries. But it takes more than just bringing the technology to them; we need to teach them to use it and to grow from it.
