I decided to critique, analyze and discuss the “Hope” poster by Shepard Fairey (16-34). This piece of art was created in 2008 as a poster. This image has become a pop cultural phenomenon and an important symbol in the political landscape of 2008 and beyond (Arnon, Ben. "How the Obama "Hope" Poster Reached a Tipping Point and Became a Cultural Phenomenon: An Interview With the Artist Shepard Fairey." The Huffington Post. TheHuffingtonPost.com, n.d. Web. 7 Apr. 2016.) The measurements of this iconic piece (16-34) are 36*24 inches screen-print. This poster was created in a day and was immediately sold on the streets. This image quickly transitioned from just a poster to a digital image that went viral all over the Internet. I looked for an image that I thought was a good image, illustrated it in one day and had the posters in …show more content…
But what makes it so special is the simplicity of the image. The lines and shapes used within this piece of art represents and shapes the overall photo, President Barack Obama. If you take a quick glance at this piece of art the first colors that immediately comes to mind are Red, White and Blue. But if you look closely you’ll notice the colors are red, beige, blue and black. I must say I think the style of the image would be abstract and representational because this figure represents Obama, America, and the support of the Presidents campaign. The principles of the design include the unity of the colors coming together and balancing out. Another thing I noticed about the colors that the analysis did not talk about in detail was the dark red on one half of the poster and the soft blue on the other. These color choices seem to show that Obama can be very stern and commanding if he needs to be, but is also very sincere and caring towards others (Badia, Jessica. "“HOPE” Poster Analysis." At first glance the painting contains images of American television and movie icons on the left and various Muslims on the right. The left imagery includes Fonzie, Robocop, Mr. T and Waldo, many of whom were idolized during their TV and movie
The entire image of the Portrait of Toks Adewetan (The King Glory) (2016) painting is interesting because Wiley uses different object to identify what the painting stands for. For example which color Wiley uses in the Portrait of Toks Adewetan (The King Glory) has an specific meaning behind. the background painting of the portrait, the shirt that Toks Adewetan is wearing, the necklace around his neck is blue is associated with purity and healing. The red that Wiley’s uses in the painting is related to life force and preservation. The diamond earrings Toks Adewetan is wearing in Portrait is white which represent is the color of learning and knowledge in Buddhism. the leaf branches are Green, is the color of balance and harmony. the gold rings and gold watch symbolizes rootedness and renunciation. The brown leather around his wrist represents his African roots.Wiley is making a statement by replacing the original white male with young men of color who dressed in modern clothing posing. assuming the original poses of Jesus Christ from King of Glory (man of Sorrows). The model transforms the message of the original icon by looking upward with pride and confidence. to show that black people life has value, they have suffered enough during
The painting was done by artist Emanuel Gottlieb Leutze. This was one of the best paint I came a cross in the museum as it helps to understand the Art work in painting. When we look the elements and principle of arts, are well presented in the painting. The first element we see is the Perspective; this the way in which artists create something that deceives the eye or mind on a horizontal level and relatively smooth. For decades, painters have tried to represent the real scene that existed in three dimensions on canvas. In addition, to create this perspective is to make the objects that are far away smaller than those that are closer to the viewer. The other way painter use to give depth to the painting is the sailor on the left who is digging his oar into mass of floating ice. Moreover, the soldiers in the distance appear to be smaller than the ones in the forefront boat that help the viewer to understand that the boat is nearer. The standing sailors in the middle of the boat are surrounded by light. This result keeps our attention of interest on the main aspects of the historic event: that founding father George Washington would become the first president and this event would culminate in the country's separation from the colonist represented by the American flag. Dark colors can often convey a sense of mystery or foreboding Light colors; and Intensity describes the purity or strength of a color. Undiluted bright colors are often associated with positive energy and heightened emotions.
There are 3 colors in the art: black, white and red. That represent for 3 types of people in the America. The artist wanted to criticize the racist during that time. Especially she is an African American. All black people didn’t have the right to vote in that time. The other element of design in this art is line. In the background of the art, we can see that is the American flag. The artist wanted to concentrate that the issue is happen in the America. In addition, it also the symbol of the jail and the face of the woman were sad. Faith Ringgold wanted to say over the art that why we are all human, we live in the same country, we speak the same language but why don’t we have the same right? “With the element of the American flag used, Faith Ringgold turn the flag into prison cell, the star becomes sheriff’s badge, the stripes turn to black bars of jail; white woman pledging allegiance to flag while denying blacks right to vote, she is a prisoner in her own bigotry” (pg 17 text book). The principles of design that she used in the art are balance and contrast. We can see the balance by looking at the stripes in the art and the contrast by the color that Faith Ringgold used in her painting. In the real life, each color in the American flag has its own meaning. Red symbolizes hardiness and valor. White symbolizes Purity and Innocence. Blue represents Vigilance, Perseverance and Justice. However, in God Bless America, everything is changed. One thing we should pay attention in this art is her hand. She putted her hand on her heart like she was praying or wishing that the racist will be stopped and everybody can be
Color is used to draw attention to important characters and objects in the painting. The red of Mary’s shirt emphasizes her place as the main figure. A bright, yellow cloud floating above the room symbolizes the joy of the angelic figures. De Zurbaran uses warm colors in the foreground. The room, used as the background for the scene, is painted in dark colors utilizing different hues of gray and brown.
Essentially the posters intentions were to boost morale at home. This was a necessity since the United States had to cut short American liberties and rights in order to successfully wage a war. Such liberties included: food rationing, involuntary drafting, metal rationing, relocation of citizens, and many other restrictions. Posters were used to keep morale high and reassure the public just what they were fighting for and that victory is inevitable.
These two colors draw the viewer’s eye to look directly at words first then to the picture located in the middle. The text says, “When you ride ALONE , you ride with Hitler,” is highlighted in black. The color black represent power and control and that also emphasizes who Hitler was.The text located on the bottom of the page, “Join a car-sharing club today,” is highlighted yellow and that colors represent positivity and energy. Also, the color of the text is a mirror image of the problem and solution. “When you ride ALONE, you ride with Hitler” highlights the problem the United States is trying avoid. “Join a car-sharing club today” is the solution to how the United States can stop their
In the figure 1920’s they initiated a series of propaganda poster to attract volunteers. The propaganda poster Our Greatest Mother Join, the artist/ illustrator of the propaganda poster was by Cornelius Hicks, he was born in Massachusetts and he was a student at Pratt Institute and had showed tremendous talent in the flied of art, he painted two posters for the American Red Cross. As I look at this picture I feel bad for the hard times that these people had to endure. It makes me upset with the way this country treated African Americans They are fighting for something they believe in and will stop at nothing to earn what they deserve. It shows the powerful message of the movement, which was to gain equal rights and prove that they are equal citizens. The message is to show how these people fought for their cause. The photo does show that they were willing to fight for their rights by capturing the people’s pain in their faces. The photo shows the determination and drive to gain equal rights. I see people running away from water being shot at by hoses to stop the protest for these rights. The water represents the sacrifice for the pain they must endure in order to get what they want.
In order to understand the meaning of an artwork, besides the overall aesthetics of an artwork, it requires the viewer to have knowledge on the context in which a work of art is produced. With this knowledge, the viewer employs a holistic approach towards an artwork. For example, Pete Fecteau’s “Dream Big” is a mosaic is made of 4,242 officially licensed Rubik’s Cubes, as shown in the image below. When looked as the whole, the icon, Martin Luther King Jr. is seen. A historical icon that embodies freedom and hope, for people who are aware of his social and cultural influence, at that time. The simple components in this case would be the image of Martin Luther king Jr. and 4,242 well-arranged Rubik’s
The black screens that contain the phrases “Our children are watching.” and “What example will we set for them?” also sets a concerned tone. That concerned tone makes you question Donald Trump’s words and actions, as well as his qualifications to become the President. The music and somewhat, dark color scheme also create a gloomy atmosphere as well.
A popular saying goes by a picture is worth a 100 words and when it comes to my image (artifact), the same can be said about the image I selected from the whitehouse.gov/issue website. The image was found under civil rights and the image has a quote inserted into it. The image has prominent members of the society whom were very involved in the civil rights movement like martin Luther king. When it comes to diversity, the image compromises of diversity in race and age group. The artifact consists of landscape, the white house and the American flag and also it is in white and black. At the bottom of the image, the quote by martin Luther king inserted is "If the worst in American life lurked in [Selma's] dark streets, the best of American instincts
Political poster is a widely used way of publicity, as can be seen from the posters of the Nazi propaganda connotations for worship leaders and policy. There are three main characteristics of posters.
At the same time, the National Socialist German Workers' Party used a variety of campaign posters as a form of propaganda. Posters became an effective propaganda tool based on its low cost and fast production. The NSDAP was able to create thousands of posters at a fast rate and plaster them within Germany. Other propaganda tools such as newspapers, pamphlets, and leaflets took a vast amount of time in order to create. Early NSDAP posters include vibrant illustrations of illusive members and political figures including Adolf Hitler. An election poster from 1929 Saxon campaign reads: “Two million dead. Did they die in vain? Never! Front soldiers! Adolf Hitler is showing you the way!” The claim is that Hitler will redeem Germany from the loss of World War I. This poster depicts a mournful solider who appears to have lost all sense of hope. It also illustrates colorless colors to provide a sorrowful feeling. A second poster consists of the November 1932 election. The text: “Papen is crippling the economy! Away with him and his program for the ruling class! Come to Hitler!” Examples of these posters were used to stir the anger and hatred of the German people against the Weimar Republic in regards to its response towards World War 1.
It seems to be his style of painting, thick brush strokes. It is not simple, there is much to the painting, there is emotion in the painting. It is a stunning piece made by him.
