Nelson Mandela an African nationalist and socialist, once said, “Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world.” While reading “Marita’s Bargain,” an essay by Malcolm Gladwell, teachers should help students try harder to do better in school and focus on getting a better education. “Marita’s Bargain” also talks about getting into a special program for students who cannot focus. “Kewauna’s Ambition” by Paul Tough talks about education in a way it focuses more on shaping the minds of privileged students and non-privileged students. Teaching students to focus on learning and have less breaks between could help them get to where they should be when they get to college or beyond.
In the story “Marita’s Bargain,” Malcolm Gladwell gives us information about the KIPP program that Marita got into. KIPP is a middle school that helps students who do not try hard enough in a public school in the Bronx. The “bargains” that Marita makes is she “leaves school at five p.m., and if I don’t lollygag around, then I will get home around five-thirty” (12). When she gets home she says hi to her mom then quickly starts to her homework and try to get finished before her mom calls her for dinner. It takes Marita two to three hours to do her homework, if it there is not a lot to do. Marita usually does not go to bed

until eleven p.m. and has to get up at five-thirty a.m. every day. Marita also lost one of her friends from her school in the Bronx because she went to the KIPP school. In contrast, the story “Kewauna’s Ambition” by Paul Tough focuses on the OneGoal program that Kewauna takes part in. Kewauna has goals that only she can achieve herself without much help if she sets her mind to only herself to improve her learning skills. “Selecting struggling students who seem unlikely to go to college” (5), letting other students know that you are more focused on helping the struggling students because the teachers think that since the students are struggling they might learn more if you go there speed. One of Kewauna’s goal was a weekly after school class where she will get help on what she does not understand while she is in class. If a student wants to get extra help after school, let them know that you are there to help when the student is struggling. In comparison, both “Marita's Bargain” by Malcolm Gladwell, and “Kewauna’s Ambition” by Paul Tough both tie together.
Marita went to KIPP, while Kewauna went to a OneGoal program, but knowing how different they are they have multiple similarities. It says to focus more education for students to help them be more intelligent. Also to learn more about a certain subject the student or students wants to learn more about. Kewauna’s main focus was biology; Marita’s was reading and math. Focusing on helping students with their education could help them learn more about what type of career they want to conquer when they go where they set their minds
to. Having to teach students different subjects in a short period of time could be difficult for some teachers. “Most challenging was Biology 170, Introduction to Health Careers” (Tough 3), Kewauna went after school everyday to get help in biology. “Over the course of five years of elementary school, poor kids “out-learn” the wealthiest kids 189 points to 184 points” (Gladwell 7-8). Marita’s story says that focusing more on the lesser kids would help them learn more than the greater kids. Nelson Mandela an African nationalist and socialist, once said, “Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world.” If trying harder in class will help you learn more than focus more on getting more fluent with every subject that is to be taken before going up a grade level.
“Education is the foundation upon which we build our future.” - Christine Gregoire. This quote is relevant to the novel “The Power of One”. In the novel, Doc was a German scientist who befriended Peekay, a young child in South Africa. Doc played an important role in the novel and Peekay’s life as Peekay grew older and older. Doc positively impacted Peekay’s life in ways that were important to him. This can be seen many times throughout the novel. For instance, Doc taught Peekay everything he knew about topics such as music and science, which went on to help Peekay later in life. Additionally, Doc also taught Peekay many valuable lessons in life. Lastly, Doc gave Peekay the one thing he never truly had: a friend.
Luigie Olmos Instructor: Danielle Panto English 105 November 28, 2016 Reaching For A Better Education Nelson Mandela once said, “Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world” (2016). Mandela’s says that education is very powerful, you can use education to change the world or your life. This means that education is important in life and we all need a good education to succeed in life. In our society education is failing because schools demand too much for a great career. For example, schools take too much time to graduate and after we finish school there is no guaranteed employment. Therefore, students are dropping out of school and are going to the workforce or military. We could make education better for students
An educational system should not control its students’ minds; instead, it should be arranged in a way that builds the students’ success with a goal to lead a person to conquer his/her purposes.
The way he emphasizes the difference between acquisition and learning, brings a whole new level to education. Using this knowledge, we can develop an education system that will help our youth stay on track and understand what they’re learning and why they’re learning it. This could be particularly helpful with elementary education, when the children are still developing what it means to learn. By redefining the education system, we’ll be able to help our children reach their real potential. If we understand how to teach, it will be a million times easier to connect with the children. We can help our next generation become properly educated about the world that they’re
He also points out that when he was a student he “never liked hearing this, and you tend to feel a bit insulted by the claim that you needed anybody to teach you how to think.” To interpertate what he says, he meant that most people believe they know what they are doing when it comes to thinking about something and being told you're thinking wrong or someone trying to teach you how to teach my offend someone thinking that they were calling them ignorant or uneducated. But he expands on his point in order to relate to the students by looking at some of their values and desires in their adult lives and this also pertains to
Creating a learning and safe environment where students can grow through a system the gives them the attention and healthy activities they need to expand their minds. I got a quote from John Gatto in his writing “We Need Less Schools, Not More” he states “education is about discovering the meaning and purpose of oneself” (54). Gatto is illustrating that a working education system should push students towards the path of what they enjoy and what they want to learn so they can understand their meaning and purpose when they graduate and walk off into the world. That is why I agree with Gatto on his view of helping students find out there purpose and meaning and adding on to that Gatto also incorporated the importance of making students unique as he also was quoted for saying “your education should make you unique” (56). The importance of being unique is because you bring a different aspect to the table when another people speak upon different ideas. You are able to see things others cannot. Incorporating a trait such as unique will take time but will only benefit us as a country that is why I installed it into my education
“ ‘Education is the most powerful weapon you can use to change the world.’ ” This quote, by Nelson Mandela, is a very powerful line. It states that with education, you have the most potential to change the world. Education is something that is, sadly, denied to many people. Education, or lack thereof, can change the path you take in life.
In the lives of minority students, education is seen as essential. It’s a dream, one that we are still trying to interpret. If we know nothing else, we know that education is important because it determines the future one is going to have. The major problem is that the education of minority students before college is poor. This deficiency causes great conflict for minority students in adapting themselves to new educational habits. Lack of good study skills makes it difficult for a minority student to control one’s time management and concentration. While these students are trying to change their study habits, there is another variable that could help or distract them from fixing their weaknesses. It is true that parents and professors do have an influence upon us. These people play a big part in the education of students, but the impact of their persuasion is not always positive. Despite all the struggles that a minority student faces, I believe people in this group can find the secret to becoming educated and successful individuals.
In conclusion, the Academic Achievement has been fueled by society's presets, minority students' lack of effort, and the failures of the schooling system in America. There has been some challenging setbacks, but the Gap can be fixed to create a common ground for all prospective members of America's society to excel on equally. By realizing that change can be achieved, there are little to no limits for minority students to create a better mindset towards education. Students, parents, and teachers have to be willing to work together, as well as tackle obstacles upheld by society, and the economic deficiencies that effect schools across America. This will, in turn, take America one step closer to closing the Academic Achievement Gap in America.
Nowadays, students are being spoon fed information in the classroom instead of actually “learning”. Teachers, who should be inspiring students to be individuals and going out to seek and learn are instead basically giving students the information just to make it easier upon themselves. Although it may be easy now, in the future when the same students that have been fed information have to go out and actually learn and find information, they won’t be able to. Students are too reliant on teachers giving them information so they won’t have to do work. Students in this generation are being complacent in a “short-cut” society and take the easy way out in everything they possibly can.
One of the main issues in the educational system is the mindset of students, especially those in poverty. Students in poverty since the, “...beginning of the Progressive Era...” have had a tendency to not put forth effort in the classroom (Hood). Cultural trends throughout twentieth and twenty-first century America has developed different philosophies on how education should be treated. The overarching theme from all time periods in America is that students in poverty tend to be less happy, less excited about school, and less invested in the future that lies ahead for them because they have no hope and optimism. According to the International Journal for Behavioral Medicine, students who have a low “...socioeconomic status [view] the future as containing more negative [experiences] than positive [experiences]”. These students are considered the trouble makers o...
Education is the source of all power allowing people to achieve any dream they choose. A person without a true education is nothing more than an empty shell living an empty and pointless life. The process of education begins at conception and the human mind continues to learn until the time of their death but most lessons are learned in the first five years of life. When the topic of education is discussed it isn’t how much is needed but how best to provide the education. The need for high quality education is typically agreed upon; how best to provide that education is not as easily as settled. The line in the sand has been drawn with neither side willing to back down and possible casualties are the children.
Nelson Mandela once said, “Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world.” The importance of an education is repeatedly shown through past and present events. Those who can’t afford an education do whatever it takes to try and learn. They know that it will lead to a better future for them. An education will not only lead to a job with more money, but it will also expand people’s minds. They will be able to create new ideas and inventions. The best way for us to change the world is through educating our youth. With a better education, they can become inspired to invent new things. Some could grow up to find cures to diseases. Educating the youth is the key to changing the world. The children of today are the leaders of tomorrow. The best way for us to give a good education to our youth is by refining our school system. We need to redefine the term ‘education.’ Teachers in classrooms change the world because they are teaching the future generation that will one day lead. If we want to change the world for the better, educating the youth is th...
“Education means enabling the mind to find out that ultimate truth which emancipates us from the bondage of dust and gives us the wealth of not things but of inner light , not of power but of love, making this truth its even and giving expression to it.”
“Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world;” this simple statement by South Africa’s first democratically elected president, Nelson Mandela, expresses a fundamental truth of the world- something as simple as education can change everything. A constantly changing geopolitical environment has continued to place increasing amounts of emphasis on obtaining a post-secondary school education. Despite this, as many as 16% of all Americans ages 16-24 drop out before completing a secondary school education and obtaining a diploma.(1) The question which few dare to consider, which I now find myself faced with, is simple: how my education is the key to a successful future. To completely grasp the extent which my education may impact the future, in a positive manner, two things must fall into consideration- how education will ensure a successful future for myself, and how it may enable me to ensure a successful future for those around me.
