Analyzing Marita's Bargain

Nelson Mandela an African nationalist and socialist, once said, “Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world.” While reading “Marita’s Bargain,” an essay by Malcolm Gladwell, teachers should help students try harder to do better in school and focus on getting a better education. “Marita’s Bargain” also talks about getting into a special program for students who cannot focus. “Kewauna’s Ambition” by Paul Tough talks about education in a way it focuses more on shaping the minds of privileged students and non-privileged students. Teaching students to focus on learning and have less breaks between could help them get to where they should be when they get to college or beyond.
In the story “Marita’s Bargain,” Malcolm Gladwell gives us information about the KIPP program that Marita got into. KIPP is a middle school that helps students who do not try hard enough in a public school in the Bronx. The “bargains” that Marita makes is she “leaves school at five p.m., and if I don’t lollygag around, then I will get home around five-thirty” (12). When she gets home she says hi to her mom then quickly starts to her homework and try to get finished before her mom calls her for dinner. Marita went to KIPP, while Kewauna went to a OneGoal program, but knowing how different they are they have multiple similarities. It says to focus more education for students to help them be more intelligent. Also to learn more about a certain subject the student or students wants to learn more about. Kewauna’s main focus was biology; Marita’s was reading and math. Focusing on helping students with their education could help them learn more about what type of career they want to conquer when they go where they set their minds
