WolfGang Amedeus Mozart Symphony No. 1 in C majar, K. 551 “Jupiter” First Movement: Allegro vivace
The first theme begins with the whole orchestra playing a “C” loudly three times. The timpani’s hit a third above. Then with a much softer dynamic the violins play a pleasant dotted rhythm melody, or the Lombardi rhythm. It goes C to B to D to C G to F. Then the orchestra plays loudly three times, again but playing the dominant, G. Then the violins softly play, in the same Lambardi rhythm, that same motive, but starting on D instead of C and ending on G instead of F. Then the orchestra loudly plays, in the dotted rhythm, the tonic chord, then the subdominant, to the dominant, back to the tonic, to the subdominant and to the dominant again, then back and forth a few times between the Dominant and the tonic and then cadencing on the dominant. The next melody is played by the wind instruments and the strings that is quite similar it the first quiet motive. There is much chromatics, as it starts to modulate and turn minor. It crescendos and cadences on the dominant, which is played loudly three times like before. Then almost just as loud and new melody with the dotted rhythm ascends upward and it cadences on the dominant of the original dominant, the orchestra playing it three times like before. The violins are quiet again as the play another pleasant melody, but in a different key. It gets very quiet and slows down. [2:04] There is a small pause and suddenly a prominent E-flat comes out of the C minor and then it goes to ‘E’ natural playing C major then to the subdominant and quickly to the tonic. The dominant is briefly embellished before it cadences to the median chord and quiets down a little. A string instrument plucks a ‘G’ and a new melody is introduced. It cadences to the original dominant and then everything repeated, but small differences hear and there.
Next, was the longest movement, Molto vivace. Dominated by D minor, this movement resembled the introduction of the opening theme in the first movement but with more lightheartedness. Also called a scherzo because of its “dancelike” theme, this section utilized the Flute, Oboe, Clarinet, Bassoon, French Horn, Trumpet, Trombone, Timpani, and Strings. I also noticed a downbeat around every three beats throughout the fast tempo in this section.
Each time I read The Awakening, I am drawn to the passage on page 69 where Edna and Madame Ratignolle argue about “the essential” and “the unessential.” Edna tries to explain, “I would give up the unessential; I would give my money, I would give my life for my children; but I wouldn’t give myself.” What most would see as essential—money (you need it for food, clothing, shelter, etc) and life—Edna sees as “unessential.” Edna is speaking of more than that which one needs for physical survival; she would not hesitate to give her life to save the life of one of her children. On the other hand, Edna’s being, her “self,” is something quite different from her physical form.
A sinfonia (Italian for symphony) broadly refers to a number of instrumental works from the Baroque period, including symphonies, sonatas, canzonas, concerti, and Italian opera overtures. Even J.S. Bach titles his “three-part” inventions for harpsichord “Sinfonia”. Torelli’s Sinfonia in D (G.8) is a four-movement “concerto” for trumpet, strings and harpsichord continuo. Unlike a concerto grosso, where a main theme is presented and then reappears in fragments, the main themes of Sinfonia in D are developed rather freely. The second movement (Adagio) is a very short, slow, interlude without trumpet that introduces the third movement (Allegro). Hence, the program shows these two movements as “adagio-allegro” joined together.

Consistently dance like, the piece is celebratory of its roots buried in historical Austrian music that has been present in the culture for years. The accomplishments of the soldiers for which the piece was composed for are easily told of simply by the energy and power present throughout the piece.

It has a very nice combination of the woodwind and violin. The music goes slow for first three minutes and suddenly it goes fast with the sound of violin and slows down again with the melodious sound of the flute and violin and repeats again giving the feeling of nature and after eleven minutes it is in very high notes. And again, from the 14 minutes, begins the second movement with the melodious sound of violin followed by other instruments. This part is very sad and attractive part of the orchestra too. It feels tragedy and sad music. The music is slow and in low notes. The flute in the fourteen minute is so attaching and alluring. I felt like listening to it again and again. The third movement then begins from twenty-three minute which also feels sad music. It reminds me of the good old childhood days. After the thirty minutes comes the most powerful and weighty part that is the fourth movement. It ends comfortably in F major. Among the four symphonies by Johannes Brahms, I liked the Symphony no.3. The movement builds up with the motif appearing increasingly often in the woodwind and strings and climaxes with octaves by the soloist and a boom from the timpani.

Conclusively, while being one of his earliest works, Mozart’s Minuet in F Major (K.2) is far from primitive. His use of repetition and subtle melodic and rhythmic variations keep the melody interesting enough to retain the listener’s attention. Not only this, but the harmonic surprises of the modulation and deceptive cadence keep the listener guessing in the best way possible. While at the surface this work may seem like nothing more than an AABA 32-bar dance, there is much more than that hidden throughout the work. If this is what Mozart was capable of at the mere age of six, it is unsurprising that his legacy remains to this day.
