Analysis of Harlem by Langston Hughes
Through the turbulent decades of the 1920's through the 1960's many of the black Americans went through difficult hardships and found comfort only in dreaming. Those especially who lived in the ghettos' of Harlem would dream about a better place for them, their families, and their futures. Langston Hughes discusses dreams and what they could do in one of his poems, "Harlem." Hughes poem begins: "What happens to a dream deferred..."
Hughes is asking what happens to a dream that is being put off. What do these dreams do, do they do good, do they do bad, or do they do neither good nor bad? He continues by stating this simile:"Does it dry up like a raisin in the sun?" Using this simile he is stating that dreaming can be good or bad. A raisin is a grape that has been dehydrated by the sun. Hughes is conveying that dreams can suck the life out of a person, mentally dehydrating them. However a raisin is not necessarily bad. If one thinks about it, a raisin was once a grape. Grapes are full of juice while a raisin is dry. Hughes uses a raisin to compare a dream deferred because just like a raisin was once a grape a dream deferred was a dream but now one must wait. Hughes says, “Or fester like a sore---/ And then run?” (4-5).
James Mercer who we all knew as Langston Hughes, was born in Joplin, Missouri February 1, 1902. Right after Hughes was born his parents James Hughes and Carrie Langston, decided to separate. His father went his way and his mother she moved around a lot so his maternal grandmother raised him. Mary, Hughes grandmother had an impact that influenced him into writing poetry. After his grandmother passed he eventually went to stay with his mother where they got settled in Ohio. Hughes began writing poetry throughout his years in high school.
Langston Hughes was an activist for the African-American community and made significant artistic contributions to the Harlem Renaissance throughout his career. In one of his most famous poems, “Harlem [Dream Deferred]”, he addresses the limitations and oppression of African Americans after the Great Depression. Many African Americans dreamed of equality, but often times that dream became neglected and pushed aside. In his poem, Hughes responds to a question about a deferred dream with a series of vivid similes, inquiring what happens to a constantly ignored dream.
It tends to permeate their thoughts and becomes an unshakable burden. In the poem “Harlem,” Langston Hughes, through literary technique, raises strong themes through a short amount of language. The poem begins with a question: "What happens to a dream deferred?” The speaker of the poem at this point is unnamed. By not knowing the speaker, the question is strengthened, as the deferred dream is the dreams and desires of all the people within the African American community.
“What happens when dreams are deferred?” is the first line in Langston Hughes’s “Harlem,” a very interesting social commentary on Harlem in the early 1950’s. It talks about a “dream deferred” Harlem, which was a haven for literature and intellect in the late 20’s and early 30’s, but has become run down and faded to a shadow of its former existence. Langston Hughes’s “Harlem” is filled with extremely vivid imagery.

It places the blame for this possible revolution on the domineering society that forces the deferment of the dream.
Thesis: The poems “Negro”, “I Too”, and “Song for a Dark Girl” by Langston Hughes was written around an era of civil inequality. A time when segregation was a customary thing and every African American persevered through civil prejudice. Using his experience, he focuses his poems on racial and economic inequality. Based on his biographical information, he uses conflict to illustrate the setting by talking about hardships only a Negro would comprehend and pride only a Negro can experience, which helps maintain his racial inequality theme.
Langston Hughes’s poem Negro uses metaphors and simile to describe his African heritage, including today’s Africans and African Americans. In his poem, he structures his poem as a Negro, a slave, a worker, a singer, and a victim. As he compares himself to these different people, he gives a brief description of each person.
One of the most successful poets in this time was Langston Hughes. “Harlem” was one of Hughes’s popular poems during the 1950’s. The poem itself is short in length, but it has a lot of meaning behind it. During this time Hughes wanted to make a difference in poetry. He did not want to be labeled as the young man only speaking to African Americans. He wanted everyone to understand his great works, regardless of color. The poem “Harlem” itself mainly talks about the dreams being wasted being African American, but on the contrary Langston was fortunate all his life. Not all African American were poor and homeless, but some lived very nice lifestyles. Generally, Langston was never part of the struggle during this time. His family were considered middle class and they never went through hardships like the poem “Harlem” seems to be. Both his mother and father had well-paying jobs that supported him and his siblings. “Harlem” by Langston Hughes is a poem that talks about what happens when we postpones our dreams. The poem is made up of a series of similes and it ends with a metaphor. The objective of the poem is to get us to think about what happens to a dream that is put off, postponed; what happens when we create our very own shelve of dreams? The “dream” refers to a goal in life, not the dreams we have while sleeping, but our deepest desires. There are many ways to understand this poem; it varies from person to person. Some may see this poem as talking about just dreams in general. Others may see it as African-American’s dreams.

He wrote “Harlem” during the Harlem renaissance during the period where African American writers spoke out against the racism and oppression that they faced in their communities. Many African Americans had hopes and dreams but they had to sacrifice because of the oppression. The main theme in “Harlem” is the limitations of the American dream for African Americans. As a black man in a time period where African-Americans were considered an inferior group of people,dreams and goals would have been difficult to realize. Langston Hughes aptly expresses his frustrations in his poem, "Dream Deferred." As people read this poem, in any time period, they can relate to the simple universal message that the poet expressed. Hughes is very expressive in how he feels about dreams he has had and the fact and his frustration at not being able to pursue and/or fulfill those dreams that he is unable to pursue or fulfill those dreams.
The main point, Langston Hughes is trying to make is that this is not what he believes what the Harlem Renaissance was supposed to be. To put this into more context, the Harlem Renaissance, during the era of the “Roaring 20s”, should have seen the advancement of African Americans in both rights and culture. However, it was instead an artistic movement from the Whites who enjoyed the rise of African American culture originating in Harlem, New York. On the same token, Hughes believed this is not what the “New Negro” persona should have became. One notable example, Hughes uses is the Cotton Club on Lenox Avenue. He claims that the place had turned into “... a Jim Crow club for gangsters and monied whites”,
