Exposition The exposition of Dussek’s Piano Sonata in G Major can be broken down into two primary themes, two secondary themes, and finally a transition into cadential extension. The first primary theme is made up in large by a parallel period. The antecedent begins on measure 1 and continues to measure 4. A 2:2:4 sentence connects the antecedent with the consequent, which begins on measure 12. Much like the antecedent, the consequent gives off an impression of statement and response; however, it is more apparent in the consequent due to the drastically changing dynamics. Overall bleeding into the continuation of the consequent which begins on measure 16. The continuation concludes with a sequence emphasizing the central theme of the piece. The silence within the figures of this theme bring attention that a change is about to take place, leading into the second primary theme. The film Ongka’s Big Moka is about a Big Man named Ongka of the Kawelka tribe in Papua New Guinea. Being the Big Man of the tribe Ongka reasures his status by arranging a Moka ceremony. In this film we see the process of a Moka that takes up to 5 years of preparation. We follow Ongka’s struggles and successes of accumulating the number of pigs in preparation for the ceremony. The film allows us to understand the motives and functions of a Moka, provides topics that have been discussed in class, and relate this culture to a similar institution within the United States.
The year is 1788 as Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart began to work on his last three symphonies during a time of strife for musicians as the Austro-Turkish War continues to war on in Austria. Tired from moving his family from central Vienna to the suburbs of Alsergrund all while in debt to his ears as he continued to borrow money from friends including a fellow mason, Michael Puchberg, Mozart finished his final symphony on August 10, 1788. This piece, nicknamed the “Jupiter Symphony,” coined by impresario Johann Peter Saloman, was Mozart’s longest symphony with a total of four movements, a typical symphonic form during the Classical era. The Jupiter Symphony totals to about forty five minutes of music ending with a quintuple fugato that brings back the five melodies introduced in the final movement making the closer one of the most complex examples of counterpoint that has ever been created. My goal shall be to give the reader a sense of Mozarts life at the time of this composition, a detailed analysis of all four of these movements, as well as a look at why this piece was seen as a work of innovation.
Each time I read The Awakening, I am drawn to the passage on page 69 where Edna and Madame Ratignolle argue about “the essential” and “the unessential.” Edna tries to explain, “I would give up the unessential; I would give my money, I would give my life for my children; but I wouldn’t give myself.” What most would see as essential—money (you need it for food, clothing, shelter, etc) and life—Edna sees as “unessential.” Edna is speaking of more than that which one needs for physical survival; she would not hesitate to give her life to save the life of one of her children. On the other hand, Edna’s being, her “self,” is something quite different from her physical form.

Dumas (the story teller) talks about her interesting and different adventures of moving to America. The accomplishments of the soldiers for which the piece was composed for are easily told of simply by the energy and power present throughout the piece.

The Violin Concerto No. 1 in G minor, Opus 26 is one of the most famous violin concertos over the musical history. It is also considered to be the most renowned work by the German composer Max Bruch. I will begin with a short explanation of why I choose to analyse this piece followed by what makes this piece so remarkable. I will then present the musical context – German Romantic period – in which this piece was composed and discuss how it is representative of this period. Also, I will present briefly the biography of the composer and relate his life and style with this particular piece of music. After, I will explain the basic structure of a concerto, associate it with this violin concerto, and analyse how each movement is related. Then, I will analyse some psychoacoustic parameters of this piece (pitch, dynamics, rhythm, and texture). Finally, I will give my appreciation of this piece in term of beauty, musical expression, and mood.

This piece was originally composed by the talented Italian composer, Nino Rota around the 20th century. Rota was a well-renowned music composer and an enthusiast of the viola. He dedicated most of his compositions to his fellow music composers. Notably, Rota composed the second Sonata to Piero Farulli. This particular piece contained three different movements under C major: Allegretto scorrevole, Andante quasi Adagio, and Allegro scorrevole. In the “A Little Bit of this, a Little Bit of that” concert, Julia Heinen and Francoise Regnet tried to bring out the calming effect of the different pieces. This pattern is repeated twice more until finally at measure four a new melodic and rhythmic motive is introduced.
