It is absolutely clear that you feel sad when somebody cheated and duplicate your own things. This causes many people to feel frustration and getting upset when they are facing this difficult situation. We know it is not a good attitude for students, authors, and anyone else to use something misappropriate that they didn’t belong it. I read an article that called “When the Story Stolen is Your Own”. When the author Sherman Alexie was writing this article, he was feeling nervous because somebody has stolen his article and use it in his own. Nobody didn’t believe him when he told the publisher that his story was stolen by someone and imitate that he belong it. Same as the students when they cheated each other and submit the same paper, it was one of the biggest challenge that happens some of the students when they are in the college. There is many reasons person can cheat other people. Maybe the person is afraid to fail class or work and this may lead people to duplicate things. Alexie’s purpose is to communicate to the reader not to believe everything you read. He wants us to question and think deeply whatever we read so far. Alexie does this through the details of his story. It’s the details that separate the real writer from the fake. Malesic mentions that a student committing plagiarism is “shameful” and “dishonest” (87). If a student plagiarized an author’s article then it is a disgrace. It is dishonest because the student is stealing someone else’s words and ideas. For example, once there was a student who was plagiarizing an author’s work on the Revolutionary War, and an honest student told the other that this was a shameful, idiotic decision. The entire novel is written in the point of view of the main character Arnold. The reader would feel as though they are having a conversation with a close friend and is then better able to relate and sympathize with Arnold’s struggles and accomplishments. For example, Arnold begins telling the reader his story by stating, “I was born with water on the brain.” (Alexie, 1) Explaining his medical condition in the beginning of the novel allows the reader to easily understand why Arnold may react differently to certain social situations. However, his medical condition also acts as an anchor allowing the reader to get closer to Arnold’s character. Without a personal connection readers may not relate or comprehend any of Arnold’s experience. Using the first person view perspective from Arnold’s character gave Alexie an advantage and makes the novel more appealing to readers.

Alexie begins the essay by telling the audience some background information about himself and his family. He tells of how they lived on an Indian Reservation and survived on “a combination of irregular paychecks, hope, fear and government surplus food.” (Page 1, para. 1) Right from the start, Alexie grabs the emotions of his audience. Alexie then goes on to talk of his father and how because of his love for his father, he developed a love for reading. “My father loved books, and since I loved my father with an aching devotion, I decided to love books as well.” (Page 1, para. 2) He talks of how he taught himself to read and that because of the books he began to thirst for more knowledge. Alexie says that once he learned to read, he began to advance quickly in his schooling. However, because of his thirst for knowledge, he got into much trouble. “A smart Indian was a dangerous person, widely feared and ridiculed by Indians and non-Indians alike.” (Page 2, para. 6) This statement is one of the most powerful statements in the entire essay. “A Stolen Life” is a book written by Jaycee Dugard discussing her experience when she spent several years in abduction. She tells her story when she is 30 years old talking about the time she was seized to her present day and how she has not forgotten those feelings she had when she was abducted. She was kidnapped at a bus stop near her home in South Lake Tahoe, California, waiting to get picked up from school. She was only 11 years old when a stranger quickly grabbed her. She ends up in captivity for more than eighteen years and stayed in a tent behind Phillip Craig and Nancy Garrido’s home. She remembers her first few weeks of being kept naked and handcuffed in a shed. She mentions being abused sexually over and over again. She had her first daughter when she was 13 years old while she was held captive. The sexual harassment did not stop even after having her second child. She said it was to the point that going for a month without molestation was surprising.

Rudy, Liesel, and Rosa display examples of beauty and brutality often without realizing what exactly they are doing, because it is a part of their human nature. Zusak not only uses his characters, but also the setting of the novel in Nazi Germany to allude to his theme of the beauty and brutality of human nature. The time in which the novel is set, during World War II, displays great examples of beauty and brutality, such as the mistreatment of the Jews. As a result of this time period, the characters have to go through troubling times, which reveals their beautiful and brutal nature in certain circumstances. Zusak uses his characters and their experiences to demonstrate the theme of the beauty and brutality of human nature in the novel.

As time evolves, so do the words that are essential for our everyday survival. The most obvious difference between humans and animals is our ability to master the art of speech. Often, people will say the “sticks and stones may break my bones, but words will never hurt me”, a simple nursery rhyme that helps ease a bullied child from abusive words and taunts. But does that really help cure the emotional pain? Words can illuminate and motivate the minds of people but can also shadow their self-esteem through psychological trauma. In The Book Thief, we see how fundamental words were to shape the reality of millions of people caught in the fire of World War II.
Plagiarism is a serious offense and a growing trend in our society today. Some may associate plagiarism with the idea of taking someone else’s writing and making it their own. In fact plagiarism involves anything that is copied or taken and said to be of your own work. Dictionary.com defines plagiarism as “the unauthorized use or close imitation of the language and thoughts of another author and the representation of them as one's own original work, as by not crediting the author”. In fact this definition covers all types of cheating and misrepresentation of ones own work. There are many numbers and statistics that can be found on the amount of individuals that have admitted to cheating. Perhaps the most astounding number is one that was reported by Moeck in 2002 aloft of 40% of higher education students commit academic dishonesty. This number I’m sure has grown since this report and will continue to grow with the development of the Internet. There are a number of ideas and strategies that can be employed in order to stop this ever-growing phenomenon. As teachers and adults, we are responsible for stopping this trend and educating students about the consequences and dangers of plagiarism. I believe there are a variety of reasons individuals plagiarize. First, students are insecure with their own ability; they don’t believe they can do the work therefore they take others. Second, students believe they can get away with the act because they know others who have plagiarized, and there were not any consequences. Lastly, students are uneducated on what plagiarism is and do not know the consequences of their actions if they commit an act. These ideas will be the focus of the position taken on plagiarism in today’s academic society.
