In “Virginian Luxuries” the painting shows a superior power that the white man have over the negro men and women. In the painting it shows a white man what looks like kissing an enslaved negro women forcefully and on the right it shows a white male beating a negro man. White men, slave owners, had the power to sexually abuse these men and women giving them power over the slaves and the slaves having no power at all.
In Toqueville 's documents he states the 3 races as white, negro and indians. He describes the white race superior over the indians and the negroes. The White’s are “ superior in intelligence, in power, and in enjoyment”. The negroes are oppressed and deprived of everything. They do not have any traces of Africa such as their language, religions and customs. They have to go through getting seperated by their family members and loved ones and do not even have a place to call home, the closest thing to that is their slave master’s roof. His idea would be to take the negroes back to where they belong (libya) to set them free. He describes that the negroes were not animals and deserved certain rights. Lincoln agrees that to stop slavery would be very hard to stop in a short time frame but he believes that it should be on a path during extinction.

During this time period, “no English colony remained without laws dealing specifically with the governance of Negroes.” Specific pieces of legislation would be passed within the English colonies that were ultimately based on the if one was a slave or free. However, with these slave laws enacted, the laws “told the white man, not the Negro, what he must do. It was the white man who was required to punish.” Overall, it was the slave owner who had the responsibility to punish the slave. For the white slave owner, “absolute control became a major priority, and slaves were subject to severe discipline.” Since the African slave was a living tool for the slave owner, he or she was not deemed to be human, which meant that a series of inhumane punishments could be sanctioned upon the African slave. Moreover, these laws were enacted so that the white man would remain in control at all times, hence white over black. Due to the fact that the African slave was not deemed a human being by the white man, the laws and punishments that were passed were inhuman as well. There are other factors that far more important than color of one’s skin. “Property, even a few cows or pigs, provided legal and social identity in this society” (Myne Owne Ground, 17). Therefore, Anthony Johnson and other successful free Black men have a better status and social identity than those White men serving their term as indenture servants. The testimony from Virginia Court Record of a white woman, Katherine Watkind, and John Long, a Negro, supports that there were no extreme discrimination between colors yet. Katherine Watkind claims that neighbor’s slave rapped her in the wood. However, the witnesses, a group of white and black men, say that Katherine initiates this event “soe she tooke him about the necke and kissed him” (Reading the American Past, 46). It seems like Black slaves and white servants are united as a group. They probably come to drink and enjoy their social life together behind their master. However, this kind of bonding is what the colonial elites fear the most –might overturn their master. Abraham Lincoln’s original views on slavery were formed through the way he was raised and the American customs of the period. Throughout Lincoln’s influential years, slavery was a recognized and a legal institution in the United States of America. Even though Lincoln began his career by declaring that he was “anti-slavery,” he was not likely to agree to instant emancipation. However, although Lincoln did not begin as a radical anti-slavery Republican, he eventually issued his Emancipation Proclamation, which freed all slaves and in his last speech, even recommended extending voting to blacks. Although Lincoln’s feeling about blacks and slavery was quite constant over time, the evidence found between his debate with Stephen A. Douglas and his Gettysburg Address, proves that his political position and actions towards slavery have changed profoundly.
He talks about how the emancipation is very important to us African Americans, but to other white people it was just a speech because it did not really involve them, so they really just did not care because it was not their history. Lincoln was a very smart lawyer and politician. During his “House Divided” speech he asked the question, “Can we, as a nation, continue together permanently, forever, half slave, and half free?" When he first asked this question, America was slowly gaining the knowledge and realizing that as a nation, it could not possibly exist as half-slave and half-free. It was either one way or the other. “Slavery was unconstitutional and immoral, but not simply on a practical level.” (Greenfield, 2009) Slave states and free states had significantly different and incompatible interests. In 1858, when Lincoln made his “House Divided” speech, he made people think about this question with views if what the end result in America must be.
Booker T. Washington was an African American leader who established an African-American college in 1181. Then in 1895 delivered the Atlanta Compromise Speech to an audience of mainly Southerners, but some Northerners were present. In his speech he made a few points. He said, “No race can prosper till it learns that there is as much dignity in tilling a field as in writing a poem.” Washington believed that the African American race needed to learn first that manual labor was just as important as the work of intellects. He thought that until they learned this they were not worthy of becoming intellects themselves. The color line is thus important in teaching them this lesson. Booker T. Washington believed that blacks should not push to attain equal civil and political rights with whites. That it was best to concentrate on improving their economic skills and the quality of their character. The burden of improvement resting squarely on the shoulders of the black man. Eventually they would earn the respect and love of the white man, and civil and political rights would be accrued as a matter of course. This was a very non-threatening and popular idea with a lot of whites.
Abraham Lincoln's position on slavery was the belief that the expansion of it to Free states and new territories should be ceased and that it eventually be abolished completely throughout the country. He believed simply that slavery was morally wrong, along with socially and politically wrong in the eyes of a Republican. Lincoln felt that this was a very important issue during the time period because there was starting to be much controversy between the Republicans and the Democrats regarding this issue. There was also a separation between the north and the south in the union, the north harboring the Free states and the south harboring the slave states. Lincoln refers many times to the Constitution and its relations to slavery. He was convinced that when our founding fathers wrote the Constitution their intentions were to be quite vague surrounding the topic of slavery and African-Americans, for the reason that he believes was because the fathers intended for slavery to come to an end in the distant future, in which Lincoln refers to the "ultimate extinction" of slavery. He also states that the men who wrote the constitution were wiser men, but obviously did not have the experience or technological advances that the men of his day did, hence the reasons of the measures taken by our founding fathers.
The first chapter focuses on the first impressions between the people of different color also the reasons Africans had evolved or changed into what they now appeared to be. The section on causes of complexion was both fascinating and entertaining. Many of the theories were of the wall and far fetched. One such opinion of how Africans gained their complexion that the book gave includes an ancient Greek myth of Phaeton. This character drove a chariot into the heavens and thus altered in his appearance (p11). Though this Greek myth, probably not the truth of how Africans gained their color many did believe it probably had something to do with the sun. The theory of equatorial dwellers of Africa, this being the reason for the skin pigmentation, became illogical once Africans were compared to the Indians living in the hottest parts of the New World (p14). Some believed that the African was merely dark because they had left their colder northern climate. Experiments quickly ruled this out as a possible answer (p15). The most far-fetched and humorous theory came through the biblical illustration involving Noah. Many believed it the curse given upon Noah’s son Ham for “looking upon his father’s nakedness” (p17). He wisely used the issue of slavery to appeal to both the abolitionists and to Negrophobes, Northerners who were afraid of living side-by- side with Negroes and competing with them for jobs. Rather, they focus on the behavior of the whites, in these cases Jefferson and the wealthy plantation owners. While the political cartoon is a direct critique on Jefferson, "Virginian Luxuries" seems more a critique on the entire institution of slavery. The title, so blatant, sounds almost sarcastic making the entire work appear to be criticizing white society for seeing humans as mere luxury objects. The critique on Jefferson is his hypocritical stance coming from the dichotomy between his writings and beliefs about blacks, versus his actions. However, the cartoon does not take a stance on whether slavery has negative or positive outcomes since the "dark sides" of slavery are not shown. "Virginian Luxuries", in contrast, critiques all of the slave owners, particularly in Virginia by exposing the negatives of slavery so blatantly that it is unavoidable. This type of display is highly unusual for this period, and because it was hidden, it was most likely not a popular opinion. During this period, it was much more common to believe in the "happy slave" as a justification to keep slavery, while this piece directly contradicts this myth.
