Todays society has begun to become more and more transfixed on basically following the leader. People see what their favorite actor or actress is doing on tv or social media and decides they want to be like that. Most people want to be just like someone else. Individuality is fading faster and faster it seems. With the rise of social media, that has became more and more evident. In the poem, “Totally like whatever, you know?” Taylor Mali shows exactly that today’s society is transfixed on being like someone else. It explains how everything is a question now and how no one has their own ideas anymore. The quote “I have nothing personally invested in my own opinions, okay?” really resonates with me. Today everyone just wants to be liked and …show more content…
There is plenty of people I know, including myself, who could care less what Kim Kardashian is doing or wearing or what any other movie star is doing for that matter. I don’t care about changing who I am to make me “popular” or “cool”, but thats just who I am. The poem, “Totally like whatever, you know?”, also talks on saying stuff to just sound cool. Mali says “Declarative sentences—so‐called because they used to, like, DECLARE things to be true, okay, as opposed to other things are, like, totally, you know, not—have been infected by a totally hip and tragically cool interrogative tone? You know?” We need to get away from this, and just say what ever we think. Theres plenty of people who will like you just because of how you naturally are. Everyone in todays world needs to read “Totally like whatever, you know?”, so they can really see how what is going on is effecting us.Mali advocates for us not to be totally mindless zombies. We need to each have something that makes us different from each other and sets us apart. We need to quit idolizing everyone coming and going, people need to realize that they are fine the way they are and shouldn’t waste there time on being someone they are not. Just do what makes your happy, and you will be
Conformity can be very crucial, infact a lot of people eventually start hurting themselves or doing drugs just because they don't feel themselves anymore. Why can't society change? why can't that one kid that always follows everyone in the back can turn into the kid that just hangs with the people they really wanna hang with?We need to embrace ourselves so we can stop all this conformity from consuming us.Tupac was a nonconformist, he always did what made him happy and always told the truth.
The initial two lines of this poem present the recollections that the primary individual storyteller will be transferring. The speaker, when she ponders the importance of her life, "… what I'm like, underneath (1)" she considers her initial two
Individualism and conformity--two very commonly used terms to describe anyone in today’s time. In comparison to the article “The Sociology of Leopard Man,” written by Logan Feys, one of the most notable quotes that relates to individualism and conformity is “to be a human is to be an individual human, with individual tastes [...][and]talents [...] that are distinct from those of others. Living in society, we are under constant pressure to surrender our individuality to the will of the majority, the school, the workplace, the family, …” (Feys Par. 6). To be truthful, conformity and nonconformity are used to determine a person’s inner-being, but every person is different, and in this case people will not always agree with each other on how they should live.
James Franco says “Attention seems to be the name of the game when it comes to social networking”, I agree with this as all teenagers in today’s society seem to want is attention. This affects them by distancing themselves from who they truly are and what they believe in as they are very focused on trying to give the people only what they like to see. For example, the Snapchat article states, “Teens have this fear that people might be doing something cooler than us, so we feel like we need to make it seem like we are doing something even cooler.” Teenagers go that extra step of doing something that they might not agree with just to feel good about getting other’s attention. This has affected teenagers because they have forgotten of expressing what they believe in or what they
The world is divided up into numerous things: Countries, states, cities, communities, etc. However, when looking at the big scope of things, one can group the vast amount of people into a society. This society is where the majority lie in the scheme of things - in other words, the common people. Individuals do exist in this society, but they are scarce in a world of conformism. Society’s standards demands an individual to conform, and if the individual refuses they are pushed down by society.
Contrary to his own experiences with the French Jesuit missionaries’ educational methods, Malidoma invokes his audience in the first part of his story through an innocence in tone and a profoundness in concept. This statement also parallels the plight of African indigenous culture in the presence of the white man. To be more specific, Malidoma explained that the Western world seemed to attack the traditions of Africa or several countries, which the white man did not understand. Although they feared much of the white man’s culture, Africans tended to accept the non-threatening aspects of other cultures as different and even tried to incorporate ideas into their own lives. Malidoma himself went even further in this approach by being educated in both societies. In his life, he has tried to understand the motives and values of both cultures, point out the differences, and even draw out some parallels in the two. Malidoma recognizes the equality of importance of both cultures. Of Water and Spirit seems to be his way of trying to instill this same recognition to other...

Everybody wants to be accepted, yet society is not so forgiving. It bends you and changes you until you are like everyone else. Society depends on conformity and it forces it upon people. In Emerson's Self Reliance, he says "Society is a joint stock company, in which the members agree, for the better securing of his bread to each shareholder, to surrender the liberty and culture of the eater. " People are willing to sacrifice their own hopes and freedoms just to get the bread to survive.
To begin with, modern society as a whole, is regressing terribly to certain ways of the Paleolithic period. For starters, instead of having everyone get along and be one happy society as a whole, we are regressing into small group that we are with almost all of the time, much like the Paleolithic people were (Engler). The Paleolithic people were hunter-gatherers, which our society has not regressed to at this time, and they traveled in small packs of people who did basically everything as one, like modern day cliques. In today's society, we are pressured to fit into a certain group of people. Even if we do not fit into one of the more popular social cliques, we are in our own group of eccentric beings who fail to fit the mold of ...
Since the beginning of time, people have been trying to become individuals and stand out as unique beings. During the foundation of the colonies, individuals were focused on preserving their religious beliefs. As slavery became more predominant, the Civil War era fought to give black people their identity back. In the 1800s and 1900s, the individual initiative shifted from giving a group of people identity to individuals fighting for their own personal beliefs. In today’s society, individualism has been diminished by the collapse of the economy, forcing people to live with their parents for longer periods of time. As the economy continues to grow again individualism is making strides in a positive direction.
Many people walk and don’t even look up anymore. Riding the bus today has become a very silent ride. You have people listening to music, checking emails, statuses, and other social network sites. You can’t even get a simple hello or how are you doing like the old days. Even in classrooms students can’t put away their phones .
The dictionary defines social media as websites and applications that enable users to create and share content or to participate in social networking. To society, we recognize social media as Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Snapchat, etc. Social media is a global phenomenon that can be recognized all around the world by people of different ages. We have gotten to the point where individuals as young as five years old are able to recognize what social media is before they can even read. The power bestowed by social media gives people the ability to find out what is happening in the lives of other people and give people insight into what is happening in our own life. However, has our society taken the social media trend overboard? Social media has placed the idea that posting every event that occurs in a person’s life is acceptable, whether it be what a person had for breakfast or what a person did that day. Privacy has become non existent. It has made individuals consumed in what other people are doing, rather than focusing on bettering their own life. A majority of the population bases what they post on these websites
Thomas Jefferson once said, “In matters of style, swim with the current; in matters of principle, stand like a rock.” A simpler explanation of this quote is that while it is good to follow with current trends in terms of style, one should never abandon his/her principles. People in current times find themselves in a world where sticking to the social norms is held to high regards by most people, and anyone out of the social norms is usually looked down upon or seen as strange. While I personally disagree with the quote’s first statement, I agree completely with Jefferson’s opinion on matters of principle. To “stand like a rock” means that someone should stick to their own principles even if it means going against the socially accepted norm. It is most important to stay true to oneself instead of
Firstly, as we are talking with somebody from the other side of social media, acquaintance or friends, we tend to open ourselves and talk about our own opinions, however, we may not know that person, and it is dangerous to talk about our private life with a stranger. Secondly, our relationship with people are not as deep through social media as they are face-to-face; they only exist through status quo. When we need them in real life, they will not be there for us. Lastly, we tend to follow and interact with people who agree with our points of view, thus, we are not getting the same diversity of viewpoints as we have gotten in the past; people can think wrong about
We all want to be someone and what happens outside of our bodies has an influence so great that we can’t control what others think but have an enormous impact on how they think it.
