Humans and the Mark on Nature Tom Disch in his poem "Birdsong Interpreted" takes an aggressive approach on attacking an intruder in hopes of scaring them away and reclaiming the peaceful homestead. In "Dead Armadillos" Gail White calmly, yet effectively discusses what she witnesses on her daily commute. On the surface the two poems may seem as if they would be two contrasting pieces, however with further investigation it becomes apparent just how comparable these two poems are. While both poems take a different approach in diction and images, it is apparent that these two poems share related themes concerning humans and the destruction of nature. The way that the speaker relays the message almost gives the sense of giving up, instead of the image of fighting and protectiveness that is portrayed in “Birdsong Interpreted.” The speaker discusses how the armadillos “collide with a ton of moving metal” (6-7), “They’re on my daily route” (8), and that “there are too damned many” (13-14). These lines show that armadillos die on a regular basis as a result of human activity, yet there are too many right now in order for people to take action. The speaker goes on to say that “when we’re down to the last half dozen” (18) the people will begin to care and take action to save the armadillos. This seems to provide the image of defeat, and that the speaker will just have to wait until it is almost too late for any action to be taken. In the narrative poem “Cautionary Tale of Girls and Birds of Prey” the author, Sandy Longhorn, tells the story of a young girl who is afraid of a hawk, and her inconsiderate father who doesn’t take her concerns seriously. The story shows how her father is determined to get rid of her fear of the hawk, because he thinks it is both foolish and childish. The daughter very well knows the capability of the hawk, however her father doesn’t acknowledge it until it is too late. In the poem, Longhorn uses alliteration and rhyme to help explore the theme of how being inconsiderate towards others can in the end hurt you as much as it hurts them. The poem takes place on a little farm where the girl and her father live with all of their livestock.
The purpose of the poem was to express my interests of nature and how I felt and what I experienced when I was in the woods at that time. There’s also that life and death aspect in this poem, in which the bird has the lizard in his mouth and also by the word “fire”.
John Updike’s poem “The Great Scarf of Birds” expresses the varying emotions the narrator experiences as he witnesses certain events from nature. His narration of the birds throughout the poem acts as numerous forms of imagery and symbolism concerning him and his life, and this becomes a recollection of the varying emotional stances he comes to terms with that he has experienced in his life. Oliver’s poem essentially gives the poet an ultimatum; either he can go to the “cave behind all that / jubilation” (10-11) produced by a waterfall to “drip with despair” (14) without disturbing the world with his misery, or, instead, he can mimic the thrush who sings its poetry from a “green branch” (15) on which the “passing foil of the water” (16) gently brushes its feathers. The contrast between these two images is quite pronounced, and the intention of such description is to persuade the audience by setting their mood towards the two poets to match that of the speaker. The most apparent difference between these two depictions is the gracelessness of the first versus the gracefulness of the second. Within the poem’s content, the setting has been skillfully intertwined with both imagery and mood to create an understanding of the two poets, whose surroundings characterize them. When thinking about nature, Hans Christian Andersen wrote, “Just living is not enough... one must have sunshine, freedom, and a little flower.” John Muir and William Wordsworth both expressed through their writings that nature brought them great joy and satisfaction, as it did Andersen. Each author’s text conveyed very similar messages and represented similar experiences but, the writing style and wording used were significantly different. In the poem by Joy Harjo called “Eagle Poem,” Harjo talks about prayer and life and how they revolve around mother-nature. She suggests that while being one with nature, we feel we are in a place in which we haven’t imagined and the things in which we would love to do in that magnificent and calming place. After one reads the poem, he/she enjoys the lyrical type of it. This is because “Eagle Poem” sticks to one idea and extends it throughout the entire poem. For instance, it talks about prayer, nature, and animals from start to finish.
The first words of the book convey a parrot that spoke “a language which nobody understood”, and Edna’s husband “had the privilege of quitting [the parrot] when [it] ceased to be entertaining” (11). In the same light, Edna speaks of and wishes for a life that nobody apprehends. Her husband also possesses the moral, objectifying liberty to quiet Edna when she did not provide leisure, as one can turn off a song once it grows into a tedious nuisance. A further exemplification comes about when Old Monsieur Farival, a man, “insisted upon having [a] bird. . . consigned to regions of darkness” due to its shrieking outside (42). As a repercussion, the parrot “offered no more interruption to the entertainment” (42). The recurrence of the parrot evolves Edna’s state of stagnance as a consequence of being put to a halt by others despite her endeavor of breaking free. Ultimately, as Edna edges out towards the water to her death, a bird is depicted with “a broken wing” and is “beating the air above, reeling, fluttering, circling disabled down, down to the water” (159). This recurrence parallels the beaten bird to a suffering Edna. She has “despondency [that] came upon her there in the wakeful night” that never alleviates (159). The poetry by these two poets creates several different images, both overall, each with a different goal, have achieved their purposes. Though from slightly different times, they can both be recognized and appreciated as poets who did not fear the outside, and were willing to put themselves out there to create both truth and beauty.
Two poems, “The Fish” by Elizabeth Bishop and “The Meadow Mouse” by Theodore Roethke, include characters who experience, learn, and emote with nature. In Elizabeth Bishop’s poem “The Fish,” a fisherman catches a fish, likely with the intention to kill it, but frees it when he sees the world through the eyes of the fish. In Theodore Roethke’s poem “The Meadow Mouse,” a man finds a meadow mouse with the intention of keeping it and shielding it from nature, but it escapes into the wild. These poems, set in different scenarios, highlight two scenarios where men and women interact with nature and experience it in their own ways.
The poem opens with iambic pentameter but the metrical foot consistently changes after the first line. Angelou uses six stanzas written in five quatrains and one tercet. The poet uses enjambment consistently to expand upon the vivid description between the two birds. The speaker projects the ostentatiousness of the human mind by using alternate end rhyme (downstream/wing and trill/still/hill) and slant rhyme (his wings are clipped... opens his throat to sing). The last two lines of the 2nd stanza (couplet) and the entire 3rd stanza is repeated in the 5th and 6th verses to amplify the significance of the perils of a closed mind, a mental state filled with darkness.
By reading the first poem we can see that an eagle can suddenly change its personality without warning. As mentioned in Tennyson's "The Eagle", the bird is sitting atop of a mountain and then suddenly dives towards the water in search of prey. We are given a description of the eagle that allows us to see how calm he is, but at the same time there is a feel to the poem that he is soon going to go for the kill, such as the alliteration used in line one, where "He clasps the crag with crooked hands;" this statement gives us a feeling that not all is calm with the eagle, it seems increasingly more and more climatic. This poem shows us the very violent yet tactical sides of the eagle, we can not make out anything caring or loving about the eagle.
The everyday objects present in his poems provide the reader an alternative perspective of the world. Robert Frost uses all the elements of poetry to describe the darker side of nature. After analyzing the Poem Mending Wall and After Apple Picking it is clear that nature plays a dark and destructive role for Robert Frost. This dark side of Frost’s poetry could have been inspired from the hard life he lived.
