It is very easy for someone to judge someone else by what they look like or who their family is, but everyone is different and deserves a chance. In the short story “The Stolen Party”, by Liliana Heker it is clear that you you should not judge a “book” by it's cover just because someone's mom is a maid to your family. That does not mean that that someone is your maid to and does not also mean that you can pay that one person for “helping” out during a party. While someone could argue that the theme might be friends can be deceiving, but for most of the story the author focuses more on Rosaura “helping out” and less on her “friends”. Throughout the story the main theme is clearly ‘Dont Judge a Book by it's Cover’. During the story the rich
family treats Rosaura as a maid and has her do things for them. For example they have Rosaura “help” by serving everyone drinks, cut and serve the cake, and serve the hot dogs to all the kids and parents during the party. This shows that they are making Rosaura do things for them and are treated here as a servant or maid. When Rosaura is doing the things they ask her to do she does it but, she simply is doing it because she thinks she is being nice. All while she is being treated as a maid. For example the family “asks” her to get juice and serve it to everyone, she does it because she thinks that they chose her because she knows the way around the house, but all the other friends should know where the kitchen his. This all shows that the family is turning Rosaura into their maid, and doing this without Rosaura knowing this, they have judge her by her cover. While some might argue that the theme of the story is that “Friends can be deceiving” they forgot that the text focuses more on her doing chores and less on Rosaura's friend. During the text there are barely any moments where the author mentions her playing or talking with her friends. But the author does mention rosaura “Helping out”. For example on Pg. 4 Par. 2, the family has rosaura pass out the cake and all the kids were saying “Me , Me, No Me” to rosaura. Which shows that the kids and family Judge her by her cover. At the end of the story the rich family pays rosaura for “helping” at the party and calls her there little pet. One example of her being called a pet is on Pg. 6 Par. 5, The rich family tells rosaura “You really earned this, thank you my little pet.” That proves that the family wanted to have her do all of those things for them. Also the family pays rosaura for “helping” at the party. This is important because the family actually pays her, and then Rosaura finally realized that she was doing all these things for them. This all shows that they judged her by her cover. It has been very clear that “Dont judge a book by its cover is the theme. Some reasons why have been the family treats her as a maid. They payed her for “helping” out, and they called her their little pet. Even though some people argued that there was a different theme, but the theme is clearly “Don’t judge a book by its cover”. Overall it is easy to say that the theme is “Don't judge a book by its cover”, that everyone is there own person.
The Party is Over by Mike Lofgren goes undercover to reveal what politics is like behind the screen. I believe this book was more for criticizing the GOP and Republicans that the Democrats. The GOP and Republicans are a lot different in politics now than they were decades ago. The book talks about how the Republicans are against the government, how Republicans are anti-science and anti-intellectual, and also how they view religious rights. All of these lead to problems with politics. The Democrats were brought up than the Republicans, but were still mentioned. They too did some damage in today’s politics. This book informs us on how the Republicans went crazy and Democrats became useless, and how it’s become a problem.
In Liliana Heker’s short story, "The Stolen Party," Senora Ines invited Rosaura to the party for only one reason, to serve. Rosaura was a very smart girl in school, but she lacked people smarts. Senora Ines told Rosaura that she would be a guest there but tricked Rosaura into being a helper instead of a guest. Senora Ines needed Rosaura to help at the party so she mislead Rosaura by making her tasks seem as if they were privileges. Senora Ines’ deviousness ultimately devastated poor, innocent Rosaura.
In her short story, "The Birthday Party", Katharine Brush depicts the cruelty that many people in this world so curtly reveal. Through her use of imagery, diction, and point of view she is able to send this message across to her audience.
Humans are not born with a label, they are taught to adhere to certain principles after suffering judgement from others. It is often found that gender is a barrier that prevents humans from experimenting. One finds that he or she cannot partake in an activity in fear of being judged and labeled. The poem Bedecked by Victoria Redel criticizes people’s judgement on her son, as he does not conform to societal standards. Gender and their associated stereotypes are presented in the poem through mundane items, purposeful diction, and the the motif of jewels.
Before I actually started to think deeply about the short story, I thought it was just a simple idea, which was a girl named Rosaura that went to a party. This story, The Stolen Party is really about the relationship between Rosaura and Luciana and how money breaks them apart. Now that I think about, this story has a really deep meaning. The author that wrote this is really good at foreshadowing and symbolizing the important key pieces in the story. What the author is trying to hide is that Rosaura is getting used as a helper and that she is not considered as a true friend to Luciana. She is being used as a worker, just like the monkey that gets mentioned in the short story. In spite of the fact that this appears like a basic story that doesn't mean a lot, there are a ton of main ideas.
In her well-known short story, “A Good Man Is Hard to Find,” Flannery O’Connor skillfully describes the difficulty of finding a morally upright human being, whether it is a man or a woman. No one is perfect, everyone has inadequacies and shortcomings, and she presents this cleverly in her story. She is able to support this view of mankind through her characters. They are self-centered, egotistical human beings who can be judged by their words and actions. This is especially true of the protagonist (the grandmother) and the antagonist (the Misfit). The grandmother tries to portray herself as a virtuous woman, but in the end O’Connor shows that her actions are always self-serving and that morally, she is not that different from the Misfit.
It is absolutely clear that you feel sad when somebody cheated and duplicate your own things. This causes many people to feel frustration and getting upset when they are facing this difficult situation. We know it is not a good attitude for students, authors, and anyone else to use something misappropriate that they didn’t belong it. I read an article that called “When the Story Stolen is Your Own”. When the author Sherman Alexie was writing this article, he was feeling nervous because somebody has stolen his article and use it in his own. Nobody didn’t believe him when he told the publisher that his story was stolen by someone and imitate that he belong it. Same as the students when they cheated each other and submit the same paper, it was one of the biggest challenge that happens some of the students when they are in the college.
Most of us can easily picture a typical child's party, loud and hyper boys running about, noise and fun and screaming kids and chaos, but this party seems to be viewed differently by the mother. It is a more serious and quiet event. She sees the boys as "short men" gathering in the living room, not as children having fun. The children seems subdued to us, with "hands in pockets". It is almost as if they are waiting, as the readers are, for something of imp...
In the story The Stolen Party, Liliana Heker shows symbolism, figurative language, and irony. Rosaura could not understand the differences between the rich and the poor. She was accepted by the rich family and was friends with their daughter, Luciana. Even though her mom told her that they only accepted her as a maid and nothing else. Nevertheless, she was eager to go to the party and decided to go with excitement. Symbolism, figurative language, and irony are expressed in the story and play an important role because it tells us the difference between the upper class and the lower class.
In The Book Thief, by Markus Zusak, beauty and brutality is seen in many of the characters. Rudy, Liesel, and Rosa display examples of beauty and brutality often without realizing what exactly they are doing, because it is a part of their human nature. Zusak not only uses his characters, but also the setting of the novel in Nazi Germany to allude to his theme of the beauty and brutality of human nature. The time in which the novel is set, during World War II, displays great examples of beauty and brutality, such as the mistreatment of the Jews. As a result of this time period, the characters have to go through troubling times, which reveals their beautiful and brutal nature in certain circumstances. Zusak uses his characters and their experiences to demonstrate the theme of the beauty and brutality of human nature in the novel.
In conclusion, in Liliana Heker's The Stolen Party, the main character, Rosaura transforms because of a party she attends which modifies her personality greatly. Throughout, the story Rosaura starts off as a very optimistic individual. During the party she possesses a lot of confidence. Paradoxically, however, by the end of the party Rosaura feels very used and disconcerted. It is in one's best benefit to pay heed to the good advice they receive from the wise.
He then explains that a girl who is loved and sheltered by her parents has to be, in a way, sold by her parents to other men by boasting about their daughters good points. She often just does as she is told and learns “a pastime she has seen others enjoy” (pg. 20). In other words, she is not her true self and is instead a mere copy of an acceptable woman.
Although the grandmother in the story considers herself to be a "good" woman, based on her assumption of what constitutes a "good" man, she is actually characterized as racist, petty, self-centered, and an insincere person; the complete opposite of what one would consider being "good". In an article analyzing the grandmother's character, a literary scholar asserts, "The grandmother’s good qualities are, however, compromised by her delusions about her background and social status. In fact, the grandmother’s notions are the source of her most serious shortcoming—her firm, and eventually fatal, conviction of her own rightness" (Hendricks, T. W.,
This short story makes the gender roles in the Southern culture very clear. Even though the grandmother is very talkative it is her mouth that put them all in danger. If she had not claimed to recognize the Misfit he probably would have let them go, but the grandmother also foreshadowed the dangerous situation happening before it happened. This irony is what I believe the author uses to draw attention to the gender roles within Southern culture. I believe the author allows the grandmother to have insight of how this misfit she saw the newspaper would be ultimately the end of their lives. If her son would have considered what she said about encountering the Misfit, he could have prevented their death. When her son chose to ignore her, it was a representation of how women’s opinion was ignored in society. The short story didn't seem to have much tension or mention about race other than the display of how the family interacted with themselves and with other African Americans. Finally, this story raises questions about class because it shows how the children treated people with a lower economic status. This family is portrayed as a working or middle-class family because the daughter knows how to tap dance, and their family is going on a vacation. The children treat people with a lower economic status poorly with a lot of disrespect. On page 4 the daughter speaks disrespectfully
As time evolves, so do the words that are essential for our everyday survival. The most obvious difference between humans and animals is our ability to master the art of speech. Often, people will say the “sticks and stones may break my bones, but words will never hurt me”, a simple nursery rhyme that helps ease a bullied child from abusive words and taunts. But does that really help cure the emotional pain? Words can illuminate and motivate the minds of people but can also shadow their self-esteem through psychological trauma. In The Book Thief, we see how fundamental words were to shape the reality of millions of people caught in the fire of World War II.
