Firoozeh Dumas’s essay “The "F” Word” is not what people think it would be about. When people hear the someone mention the “F” word all sorts of things pop into their head. Yet, Firoozeh Dumas twist the meaning of her title to something people wouldn't think when they heard the title. Dumas takes a stereotype in the title to grab our attention. People in the American Society judge people by more than just the color of their skin, for instance in Firoozeh’s case it was her name. Dumas’s word choice in “The “F” Word” puts it on another level. She starts her preview of her word choice with the title. She could have said my story, America prejudice towards different names, or something else like that. Instead Dumas chooses a phrase that has an extremely negative connotation and takes the phrase out of meaning. We, as the readers do not understand the meaning of the title yet. We just assume because of the phrase that is is going to be something negative. While the article progresses, the reader learns the assumption over the title is incorrect, and that the “F” word is just her first name. Just the title alone exhibits a mastery of choosing words and her ability to take them out of normal context and make them work perfectly. In one excerpt, the author showcases how easily and masterfully she can sculpt words and phrases. Her use of words and phrases in this excerpt pull us the reader in and paint a complete picture, “ In Berkeley, and only in Berkeley, my name drew people like flies to baklava. These were usually people named Amaryllis or Chrysanthemum, types who vacationed in Costa Rica and to whom lentils described a type of burger. These folks were probably not the pride of Poughkeepsie, but they were refreshingly nonjudgmental.”. The author could have used very dull described Berkley and their interesting looks toward life. Because I spoke English without an accent and was known as Julie, people assumed I was American. This meant that I was often privy to their real feelings about those “damn Iranians.” It was like having those X-ray glasses that let you see people naked, except that what I was seeing was far uglier than people’s underwear. The “F Word” is an essay about an Iranian girl’s struggle with finding who she is, in a foreign land known as the U.S. It acknowledges her inner struggle with an outward showing character of herself that she holds, her name. During the essay the reader learns about how the girl fights her inner feeling of wanting to fit in and her deep rooted Iranian culture that she was brought up to support. Firoozeh Dumas, the girl in the book, and also the author of the essay, uses various rhetorical tactics to aid her audience in grasping the fact that being an immigrant in the U.S. can be a difficult life. In "The Meaning of a Word" and "Being a Chink", Gloria Naylor and Christine Leong examine words of hatred that are meant to scorn, hurt and disgrace people. But these same words could also be used without harmful intentions and in a fashion of endearment amongst the people those words were created for. They each had a different word to discriminate their different culture and ethnicity. These writers discuss the words "nigger" and "chink", which are words in our language mostly ignorant people use. Naylor and Leong are also both minorities who were raised in America. They talk about how discrimination and hatred towards minorities is almost always inevitable in America, which is mostly populated by Caucasians. Naylor and Leong observe how these racial acts of discrimination can unify a group of people even closer together. Naylor didn't know the true meaning of the hate word nigger until it was used against her in a degrading manner. On the other hand Leong already knew what chink meant but wasn't traumatized until she found out her father discovered it.
Fueled by fear and ignorance, racism has corrupted the hearts of mankind throughout history. In the mid-1970’s, Brent Staples discovered such prejudice toward black men for merely being present in public. Staples wrote an essay describing how he could not even walk down the street normally, people, especially women, would stray away from him out of terror. Staples demonstrates his understanding of this fearful discrimination through his narrative structure, selection of detail, and manipulation of language.

This article is an oped piece in which a fictional writer starts off by denying the existence of racial tensions and institutional racism within America. She supports this by claiming that it is impossible for the mindset of a modern American to adopt racist ideologies because it is impossible for one to view humans as anything more than, ”muted, roughly person-shaped silhouettes”. The op-ed then degenerates into a metaphysical questioning of the nature of human beings and her lack of ability to even perceive basic human attributes. The fault portrayed in the writer is that as she attempts to depict her own lack of racial bias, she denies the existence of racial diversity itself. Her line of reasoning is mocked as she extends it to a broader and broader scope until she claims that human life is an insignificant and mundane product of our universe. Her ideologies are never once directly criticized, only mocked through her flawed reasoning. In addition, the character of the writer herself is not the object or criticism, rather the ideology she presents is the object of criticism. The movie 'Ethnic Notions' describes different ways in which African-Americans were presented during the 19th and 20th centuries. It traces and presents the evolution of the rooted stereotypes which have created prejudice towards African-Americans. This documentary movie is narrated to take the spectator back to the antebellum roots of African-American stereotypical names such as boy, girl, auntie, uncle, Sprinkling Sambo, Mammy Yams, the Salt and Pepper Shakers, etc. It does so by presenting us with multiple dehumanized characters and cartons portraying African-Americans as carefree Sambos, faithful Mammies, savage Brutes, and wide-eyed Pickaninnies. These representations of African-Americans roll across the screen in popular songs, children's rhymes, household artifacts and advertisements. These various ways to depict the African ?American society through countless decades rooted stereotypes in the American society. I think that many of these still prevail in the contemporary society, decades after the civil rights movement occurred.
In “Citizens: An American Lyric” by Claudia Rankine the audience is placed in a world where racism strongly affects the daily American cultural and social life. In this world we are put as the eyewitnesses and victims, the bystanders and the participants of racial encounters that happen in our daily lives and in the media, yet we have managed to ignore them for the mere fact that we are accustomed to them. We’ve seen the word autoethnography in Pratt’s essay. We’ve also seen an example of how it relates to Mexican cultures and languages in Anzaldula’s essay. But what does the word really mean to us? How does the word relate to us? Our people? How do we relate to it? I am an African American and Wideman gives a good example of how it relates to African Americans. More specifically, he focuses on African American men in so-called “ghetto” neighborhoods. However not all African American men in these areas fit this stereotype. Wideman explains how these men can be overlooked as human beings and shouldn’t be instantly categorized under the typical stereotype. He shows an example of these people being targeted, stereotyped, and marginalized in an Essay titled “Our Time.”
Hill Collins’ theory is built around the idea of intersectionality. She defines this concept as “systems of race, social class, gender, sexuality, ethnicity, nation, and age [that] form mutually constructing features of social organization” (Hill Collins, 2000, p. 299). Society attempts to categorize its members into groups and project “controlling images” that offer a stereotypical view of a person onto its members (Hill Collins, 2000, p. 69). These images are limiting and are unable to capture the multiplicity of individuals. Rather than seeking to pinpoint a single characteristic to describe and understand a social actor, Hill Collins calls for an analysis that considers how these various systems of classification come together and intersect – intersectionality. When intersectionality between these systems is not present or acknowledged, people tend to be classified by only a very restricted number of categories. These in turn impose controlling images on an individual and are used to define him or her. My mom, with her camera in her hand, was so excited that she lined up at the front of the church one hour earlier to get a good seat at one of the church pews. I was late for school, and my father had to walk me in to class so that my teacher would know the reason for my tardiness. My dad opened the door to my classroom, and there was a hush of silence. Everyone's eyes were fixed on my father and me. He told the teacher why I was late, gave me a kiss goodbye and left for work. As I sat down at my seat, all of my so-called friends called me names and teased me. The students teased me not because I was late, but because my father was black. They were too young to understand. All of this time, they thought that I was white, because I had fare skin like them, therefore I had to be white. Growing up having a white mother and a black father was tough. To some people, being black and white is a contradiction in itself. People thought that I had to be one or the other, but not both. I thought that I was fine the way I was. But like myself, Shelby Steele was stuck in between two opposite forces of his double bind. He was black and middle class, both having significant roles in his life. "Race, he insisted, blurred class distinctions among blacks. If you were black, you were just black and that was that" (Steele 211).
With all three of these aspects of racism in consideration, race was a prevalent theme in the book that couldn’t escape the reader’s consciousness. Whether it was through showing the division of the communities, or through the feelings that each race held about the other race, the book portrays the history of racism in America.
Assata’s childhood was filled with contradictions. Despite affirming that her family instilled in her “a sense of personal dignity” (Assata 19), she notes that, for them, “pride and dignity were hooked up to things like position and money” (20). In this way, her “awareness of class differences in the Black community came at an early age” (20-21). Her grandparents associated being good enough with having the same things white people had. Although she was raised to believe she was good enough, this was not the message that the environment constantly communicated to her. She attended segregated schools and grew up amidst an unconscious rhetoric of self-hatred fostered by beauty stereotypes that included skin bleaching, hair straightening, and the rejection of numerous body parts: thick lips, wide nose, kinky hair. All of these distorted beauty expectations disrupted her identity as a black girl. If she was expected to behave as whites did, why didn’t she have the same things as they? she wondered. This caused a great amount of resentment toward her mother, for example, for not having “freshly baked cookies” (37) upon her arrival from school —like white kids in commercials did—, and resentment towards having to do chores, which white kids did not have to do. The anger continues to build up and appears to reach its childhood peak when she tells the story of a white boy she attacked in the sixth grade because he accused her of stealing his pen. Assata states: “I was usually very quiet and well behaved. [The professors] acted like i had jumped on that boy for nothing, and they couldn’t understand why i was so angry. As a matter of fact, even i didn’t understand. Then” (42). This episode exemplifies the outbursts of rage that daily encounters with racism can lead to. Her incapacity to articulate the reasons for the anger show her inability to assimilate the condition of
