A painting that stood out to me was Sermon to the Birds on page 147. It is part of a series of frescoes in the Upper Church painted by Giotto. It is a painting of St. Francis giving a sermon to birds. He loved nature. It was based on the biography of Francis written by Bonaventura. Francis’ love for birds and nature is evident when he gives his sermon and his song of praise to “Brother Son. “A viewer in the middle ages might see this painting as being inspiring and holy because Francis is giving a sermon to birds. In addition, they might notice how the painter uses perspective, and how beautiful the colors are. The painting on the next page may affect how someone views the picture. In addition, music and narration can give paintings a whole new meaning. By mass producing these paintings, they lose their originality because anybody has access to the picture of the painting. People no longer have to travel to see the work of art. If the art is displayed in a room by itself, people might think of it as being on a shrine all by itself because it is so valuable. However, when we see the painting in our text or on our screen, it loses its importance and value. The painting no longer appears to be still and silent. Nearly everything that we read about art encourages an action or expectation. It is important to preserve and display art, such as the drawings by Leonardo. The meaning has become mysterious because of its market value. It has become a holy shrine. Many people are fascinated by paintings or drawings like these because of how long they have survived. The camera, by making the picture transmittable, has multiplied its possible meaning and lost its original meaning. The most important thing about paintings is that they are still and silent. It can be striking occasionally. The experience of this makes the painting connects the moment it represents to the moment you are looking at it. Paintings can be used to make points for argument. The most obvious way to manipulate them is to use movement and sound. On a screen for some pictures, you can’t see the whole thing. Paintings can be presented as a story. I have chosen the painting Baptism of Christ by Pietro Perugino created in the 14th Century Renaissance era because it is full of meaning and baptism is a big part of the Christian faith. Looking at this painting from left to right you can see on the northern wall in the background is the Sistine Chapel. There are two scenes being painted. Though most works of art have some underlying, deeper meaning attached to them, our first impression of their significance comes through our initial visual interpretation. When we first view a painting or a statue or other piece of art, we notice first the visual details – its size, its medium, its color, and its condition, for example – before we begin to ponder its greater significance. Indeed, these visual clues are just as important as any other interpretation or meaning of a work, for they allow us to understand just what that deeper meaning is. The expression on a statue’s face tells us the emotion and message that the artist is trying to convey. Its color, too, can provide clues: darker or lighter colors can play a role in how we judge a piece of art. The type of lines used in a piece can send different messages. A sculpture, for example, may have been carved with hard, rough lines or it may have been carved with smoother, more flowing lines that portray a kind of gentleness.
What makes us human is the ability to recognize the good in other people and in turn recognize the good in ourselves. There is a saying that whatever you think about another person is just a reflection of what you think about yourself; it is like looking into a mirror. Paintings can act like mirrors as well; we can gaze into a painting and see the good of the subject being portrayed and in turn we can identify the same attributes within ourselves allowing us to relate to the subject matter. Both Rembrandt and Vermeer were able to capture intersubjectivity in their paintings. When entering the room, one cannot help but feel pulled into each and every painting. The realization that the artwork hanging on the walls was created hundreds of years ago, and still exists in pristine order, to me makes these pieces of art, relics. The unique element of the painting is that use of cubism, which allows for the painting to carry a form of mystery behind it, as it does not simply give you the image, rather, it provides the elements of a complete composition that then the viewer must piece together. What the image truly shows us, however, is that of a naked female playing a mandolin with us as the viewer able to see the profile of her face looking down towards the strings of the mandolin, while her body faces towards the viewer, giving a good usage of twisted perspective. “The colors in this painting are shades of light brown, tan, yellow, and olive green. Frida Kahlo’s self-portraits show her view on her life, on how she has faced so many struggles, yet managed to be a strong person. When we see or hear or read an artistic creation, it produces a mood such as calm or loud, fear or safety. For example, the Eiffel Tower gives Paris a majestic awe; everyone who passes by feels the strength of the 113-year-old grand structure. Art also has a texture. Photographs reveal much through their textures; grainy surfaces often make the picture more realistic while smooth ones seem softer. When we hear a piece of music or see a film, a rhythm carries us from one part to another. Not just true for these two genres, rhythm is present in any artistic work. These few properties are characteristic of everything we encounter in the world of art, the world of human expression. Most have other special features also. Most of the time, though, we do not think about these characteristics because we do not have enough time to pay attention to anything for more than a few seconds.
Art is important to religion in many different ways. Perhaps none has analyzed how art and religion have influenced and affected each other through the ages. Pictures painted of past events that help to bring back the feeling and importance of the past have been forgotten by some. To the one’s that haven’t forgotten are able to see the event’s as the bible says they happened. Not only can you see the events, but it also allows the younger students of the church to understand the events. The use of images of God became widespread after the second century. This religious art has defiantly been around for centuries and plays an important role to the history of religion as well as the future.

To glance at art, we must go through a process of interpretation in order to understand what it is we are looking at. Solso describes the neurological, perceptual, and cognitive sequence that occurs when we view art, and the often inexpressible effect that a work of art has on us. He shows that there are two aspects to viewing art: nativistic perception—the synchronicity of eye and brain that transforms electromagnetic energy into neuro-chemical codes—which is "hard-wired" into the sensory-cognitive system; and directed perception, which incorporates personal history—the entire set of our expectations and past experiences—and knowledge (Solso, preface)

In prehistoric times cave dwellers drew on the wall of caves to record history. In biblical times paintings recorded the life and death of Christ. Throughout time art has recorded history. Most art is created for a specific reason or purpose, it has a way of expressing ideas and beliefs, and it can record the experiences of all people.
