These first lines of Mina Loy’s poem “Parturition” indicate the way in which the poet distin-guished herself from other (male) modernist poets: “I am”, writes Loy, and puts a woman in “the centre” of her poem – a poem which has a distinctly female experience as its topic, childbirth. As modernism was a male-dominated literary movement, the experiences of women were largely disregarded but Loy aimed to give the “new woman” a voice and “pre-sented a new female perspective”. In 1914, Loy wrote her “Feminist Manifesto” that speaks out against the inferior position of women in society and stresses the importance of the aban-donment of the traditional view on women. This, in fact, is an example of “dynamic decomposition” of which the speaker claims she understands nothing. The ironic contradiction of form and content underlines the contradiction between the women’s presentation of her outer self and that of her inner self. The poem concludes with the line “’Let us go home she is tired and wants to go to bed.’” which is a statement made by the man. Hence, it “appears to give the last word to the men” but, in reality, it mirrors the poem’s opening lines and emphasises the role the woman assumes on the outside as well as her inner awareness and criticism. This echoes Loy’s proclamation in her “Feminist Manifesto” in which she states that women should “[l]eave off looking to men to find out what [they] are not [but] seek within [themselves] to find out what [they] are”. Muske asks, “The question of self, for a woman poet…is continually vexing…what is a woman’s self?” (Muske 3). Women have historically had their self created for them by the patriarchal society in which they live, which leaves contemporary women wondering how to define a woman’s self at all. Even if they, as women, can create a self, how accurate is it? Muske muses on what is a truth telling self since a woman’s perception of truth is colored always by what the patriarchal society is telling her is truth. Muske says in her poem “A Private Matter”, “…there are the words, dialogue of people you once became or not…”. It is in these words that a woman finds herself, a poem of all the selves in a self, but not without a cost. In “Epith”, Muske muses:
Clifton’s usage of large hips to represent women gives the reader a clear mental image of something large and demanding more space just like women of today. Her style choice of free form breaks the traditional poetry forms, which accompanies her message about women needing to break tradition in today’s patriarchal society in order to better their lives. The imagery in the poem coney’s the strength and the determination of women breaking free from societies shackles and stereotypes. In concluding her poem, Clifton wants the reader to be left feeling empowered and hopeful with her decision to shift a tone about the advantage that comes from the unique qualities of women that men do not possess. If women do not take heed to the message of Lucille Clifton in this poem about the urgency and need for gender equality, the problem women face will only progress. Who she is as a poet, feminist or not, her experiences where what she wrote about and how she connected with the world and how she got away from her life as the, “middle aged witch,” or house wife. With the Double “I”, the tone and repeation, and who she was as a person, house wife, and poet. The very end of each stanza in “Her Kind”, “I have been her kind,”(7) isn’t just there. This is where she can connect with both her madness as the witch, adultress, and a housewife, with the “kind” she real was, a woman who writes.

She has taken away the fear than many women feel when they want to stand up against the male figure in their life. When women are able to be strong, and use the power that they have always had, they are able to move mountains with that power. They can remove themselves from a man who takes advantage of them or objectifies them, and reduce them to nothing more than the coward that they are. Larcom’s poem painted a clear picture of progress that women have made against men, and how they are tackling the issues set before them. Because of Larcom and her ability to use her voice through writing to portray and strong vision of women, has empowered many others to do the same. They are able to break free from the chains of repression that so many men have restrained women by for so long.

“She wanted a little room for thinking” (1) is how Dove begins her poem, and this automatically lets the reader know that the female subject of the poem has been troubled by something, or someone. This line alone portrays the gender of the poem, and it welcomes the reader into the life of this woman who desires to reflect on whatever has been troubling her. By using the pronoun “She,” as opposed to “I,” Dove looks in on the life of an unknown woman and not on the life of her own. Throughout the poem, we learn about this woman’s miniature escape away from her daughter, Liza, and all of the responsibilities that come with being a mother. ‘The woman’ of the poem has no specific identity and this helps us even further see the situation in which the woman is experiencing, the lost of one’s identity. Questions start to be raised and we wonder if Harwood uses this character to portray her views of every woman which goes into the stage of motherhood, where much sacrifice is needed one being the identity that was present in society prior to children.

Evelyn Cunningham once said, “Women are the only oppressed group in our society that lives in intimate association with their oppressors.” For thousands of years women have been oppressed, not in the bondage of slavery but in the bondage that comes from a lack of education and a dependence on men for their livelihood. Women have been subjected to scrutiny and ostracization, belittling and disparaging comments, and even at times they have been feared by men. Women themselves have even taken on the beliefs that they require a man in their life to be taken care of and have a satisfying life although some women and even some men have seen that the differences between the sexes is purely physical. This oppression, as well as the enlightenment of some, is well noted in many literary works. Literature has often been an arena for the examination of the “woman question,” as it was termed in the Victorian age. Four works that examine the role or view of women in society are John Stuart Mill’s The Subjection of Women, T.S. Eliot’s “Love Song of J. Alfred Prufrock,” Virginia Woolf’s A Room of One’s Own, and Carol Ann Duffy’s “Medusa.” Although each work examines a side of the woman question in its own way with a variety of views on the question, all of the works examine the fear that women incite in men, the idea that women are dependent on men, and the idea that women are separate from men in some way and each piece works to show that there is actually an interdependence between men and women that is often not expressed.
Gloria Steinem, a journalist and activist, identifies the purpose of a feminist who “is anyone who recognizes the equality and full humanity of women and men.” In other words, feminism is the belief that men and women should have equal rights and opportunities. Discrimination against women has been going on for decades. Donald Hall’s Literary and Cultural Theory explains that the “Key to feminist analysis is recognition of the different degrees of social power…” (199). Meaning that depending on the social power, women can be treated differently. Nevertheless, women in society are like cows; they are branded in a way where they are seen as property owned by men. Women are labeled as “weak and sensitive” but when they stand up for their rights and make a decision; they are seen as crazy human beings whose expressed thoughts are misunderstood as nonsense. Confessional poetry of women poets of the then 1950s and 1960s opens a new vista for them to express their ‘self’ and to foreground their identity. These poets feel the need for self-affirmation because of their experience of marginalization in society. They found all the experiences are gendered in the 1950s and 1960s patriarchal society and so they also develop a gendered image of their ‘self’ in their confessional poetry.
