National Institutes of Health (NIH), operating division of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, a part of the Public Health Service. The NIH traces its origins back to the establishment of the Laboratory of Hygiene in 1887. It supports and conducts biomedical research into the causes, diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of diseases and uses a modern communications system to furnish biomedical information to the health professions. The NIH also supports grants and contracts for fellowships, training, construction of health research facilities and community health centers, and student loans and scholarships. At the beginning of 2004, the NIH included more than two dozen institutes and centers, many of them based in Bethesda, Md.
For my second choice host laboratory, Brookhaven National Lab, the activities and research established in the bioscience department are of the greatest interest to me. I had previously visited Brookhaven National Lab for a tour of the various facilities when I was younger. One facility in particular that stuck out in my memory was the national synchrotron light source. The ability to use light as an analytical tool still almost seems almost like a fantasy to me. If possible, I would like to be able to see for myself the applications of the NSLS in biological, pharmaceutical, or medical investigations. Due to my experience with neurobiology and physics research, individual labs that I feel would be good fits for me would be the neuroimaging, imaging instrumentation, and molecular/structural biology research groups.
The University of Phoenix Bachelor of Science in Healthcare Administration (BSHA) program is intended to support the educational and career progression needs of both trying and experienced health care professionals through complete and coordinated learning. Students concentrate on creating key market-driven abilities and aptitudes which address the opportunities and difficulties of an ever-changing health care industry. There are six student learning outcomes that faculty and staff hope for all students in the program to accomplish. These SLO’s are evaluation statements that test the knowledge of the student. If the student can effectively analyze and apply the outcome in relation to the degree program, the student and faculty has successfully
Med-Pharmex Incorporated is known nationally and abroad as a pharmaceutical manufacturer of animal-related products. Before gaining fame worldwide, the business began its journey to success as a small lab in 1983, which slowly grew over time. Since then, the company maintains its main goal, and that is to produce drugs that promote the health of companion animals, such as dogs, cats, and horses, as well as food-producing animals, such as pork and chickens. To ensure legal responsibility, the company’s manufacturing process is examined by the United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA). Med-Pharmex works closely with veterinary clinics who purchase their life-saving drugs and represent them in the market. Despite manufacturing drugs, the

Threat of new entrants is relatively high. Companies forming alliances are potential rivals. Even if earlier such company was not considered to be a threat, after merging with some research and development company or forming alliance with another pharmaceutical company it would become a rival to Eli Lilly. The threat is however weakened by significant research and development costs necessary to successfully enter the business. Eli Lilly’s focus on a relatively narrow market of sedatives and antidepressants weakens the threat of new entrants, but other products that form lesser part of company’s sales such as insulin and others are exposed to high threat of new entrants. The need of obtaining certificates and licenses also weakens the threat of new entrants. Discussed above leads to the conclusion that threat of new entrants is medium.
The United States has long been a leader in scientific research, but it will take industry, academia, and government working together for our country to stay there. Since the implementation of the Bayh-Dole Act of 1980, which gave universities greater control over intellectual property, research universities have teamed up with partners during early-stage development to further their resources. The new task of universities was not to conduct research with the intent to make money, but to present their findings to the public domain for the sake of knowledge and the public good. In 2004, David Sinclair and Christopher Westphal, two innovative scientists following their intuition, founded Sirtris Pharmaceuticals. The founding idea arose from Sinclair’s
It may sound unbelievable that Big Pharma has tremendous influence over everybody. However, we can see advertisements and commercials everywhere around us. Commercials on television market the drugs to society by depicting nice surroundings and happy consumers. This plants subliminal messages into our brain that subconsciously affects us, telling us that this drug will produce happiness when we take it. Even ads on billboards and newspapers affect the way we see drugs. All these messages tell us that we need drugs in order to be happy in life like the mom or children depicted on T.V. Every year, the pharmaceutical industry spends over $3 billion on consumer ads and the price is nothing compared to the billions of dollars the ads help rake in.
In recent years’ health reform has been a driving force in the United States political system. If you watch the news you will undoughtabley hear how citizens, the government, or the economy is or might be effected by some sort of change in medical regulation. One of these hot topic issues is the cost of prescription drugs. Every major drug market besides the United States regulates the price of drugs in some way (Abbott and Vernon). By the United states not doing so many believes it opens consumers up to be exploited by large pharmaceuticals companies. Other believe regulating drug prices limits investment, innovation, and competition in the pharmaceutical industry. In many ways both views are correct yet the later may have more long term lasting
Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) key role in the United States health care system is to act upon the different new provision that the Affordable Care Act implemented. It’s role on the Affordable Care Act is to “expand coverage, emphasize prevention, improve the quality of health care and patient outcomes across health care settings, ensure patient safety, promote efficiency and accountability, and work toward high-value health care” (citation 1). The HHS has 11 different division that is set up to tackle the issue that the Affordable Care Act placed on the United Healthcare system when it was passed. The one that focuses on quality of healthcare is the Agency for Health Care Research and Quality (AHQR). The AHQR main goal is to perform research on different intervention to prevent or reduce hospital-acquired conditions. They have done extensive research on Catheter-Associated Urinary Tract Infection, Central Line-Associated Blood Stream Infections, and Adverse drug event, which are the three main ways patient stays in the hospital for an extensive period. According to the statistics that they have compiled, they have saved the United States government approximately $28 million dollars because of their research on Hospital-acquired conditions (AHRQ). The Joint Commission contributes to the United States health system
At least once in a lifetime , we accomplish things that make us feel like we're ten feet tall . They might not be compatible with everyone else’s definition of an accomplishment . When it’s meaningful to you , you’ll wear it like a badge of honor . I’m so glad that I got to experience of learning about the human body and how it functions . Learning about this body we live in has always been a passion to me . Even though i enjoy other things like dancing I love to discover new things about health .
“Public health nursing is the practice of promoting and protecting the health of a population using knowledge from nursing, social and public health sciences.
This includes legislative bodies, but also includes government agencies like the Centers for Disease Control which can advocate legislative bodies of government to allocate funds to our cause.
Public Health is the most important aspect of medicine. My studies in Public Health will go a very long way to help me grasp the proper concepts and tools needed to work with the government to bring sustainable solutions to health care problems faced by various communities today. Public Health issues touch almost every family in the USA today. I know that if the health sector was better funded, better equipped, and better managed, with clear and effective policies, this kind of suffering could been avoided. I want to go into public health because I believe strongly that I can contribute not only to my fellow Americans, but also to people all over the world. I anticipate that through proper planning, interventions and implementation of effective policies, one will be able to bring about much-needed change through my work with an NGO or non-profit affiliated with the UN.
