Research
My first research experience took place from the Fall 2012 – Summer 2013 in a neurobiology laboratory (Dr. Daniel Plas) focused on Parkinson’s Disease. In this project an undergrad student and I were tasked with optimizing a cellular medium for neural growth of the model organism Lymnaea stagnalis. This was comprised of following established protocols and altering certain variables within the formulas (differing concentrations of ions, pH, et al.) to observe growth pattern differences in vitro.
During the summer of 2013 I began a project with my Physics Department in the field of nuclear science under the guidance of Dr. Mohammad Hannan. For my first choice host laboratory, Oak-Ridge National Lab, I would be highly interested in potentially being able to work with the Spallation Neutron Source or the High-Flux Isotope Reactor for the use of biologically relevant applications. After reading and studying about these state of the art facilities for so long, I’m sure the experience of utilizing them for myself for scientific research would be an unforgettable one that I would carry into my career as a scientist. In particular, the work accomplished within the nuclear medicine group at ORNL has captured my interest for its multidisciplinary nature and its significant discoveries/advances in human health research. Additionally, I would be interested in working with the Center for Structural Molecular Biology in any way I could. A surprised Dr. Paul Bowman, Chairman of the Pediatrics department decided to call my bluff and invited me for an interview. After visiting with me and viewing my portfolio, he immediately put me under the directive of Professor Basha who was conducting research on pediatric brain cancer. I really got a new enlightened appreciation of the intensive research I was working alongside a team of eight other graduate student researchers on Ewing’s sarcoma and Medulloblastoma.The diligent work helped build my attention to detail as micro-pipetting was minute work. ...ine in their work. Overall, my interest in nuclear medicine is at its peak currently, which is most likely due to my science research project for Intel. My ideas for this particular project were based on my knowledge in nuclear medicine. My research topic, deep-vein thrombosis (a blood-clot in the deep-veins of the body), actually transpired from a list of impending projects that my mentor provided me with when I first started volunteering last year. I worked very hard on this project and I even gained some recognition, but all in all, my reason for participating in Intel competition has to do with my dream of becoming a physician in nuclear medicine in the near future. I hope to successfully finish high school, university, and medical school with a Master’s Degree (MD) before crossing all boundaries and working to attain my Physician’s Degree (PhD) in radiology (nuclear medicine).
Through the article “Sizism – One for the Last ‘Safe’ Prejudices” by Sally E. Smith, I discovered that sizism really affects many aspects of one’s everyday life, such as job opportunities, travel issues, and the way people view a “person of size” in general (86-88). Smith uses many of these to prove how much sizism is not as safe or acceptable as one may think. Although with all that Smith has proposed, I honestly do not feel that it is as big of an issue as she makes it.
Suzan Harjo is a Native American rights activist, writer, lecturer, and poet from the Hodulgee Muskogee and Cheyenne tribes. She helped recover more than 1 million acres of stolen tribal lands and served as a liaison between the United States Congress and Native American tribes. Suzan acted as the main plaintiff in Harjo v. Pro Football, Inc., the successful lawsuit imploring the Washington Redskins to change their name. The biggest goal I have set for myself is to save someone's life. Not like a doctor would save someone's life but helping someone who is about to end their life see how valuable they are. I want to show people that their life is worth everything and the impact of ending their life would have on their friends and families. It is more then anything they ever believed. I know first hand how hard life is and how suicide seems like the best solution. I have a better understanding of what they are going through and what actually helps them then just telling them to be happy and everything will be okay. I have already been listening and counseling some people that go to school with me. I have begun researching and reading articles about Psychology, ways to prevent suicide, stories from survivors, and simulations about what would become of your family and friends once the victim is gone. I am going to go to Western Kentucky University and gain my doctrine in Psychology. I will intern at a well established therapist office while I am in college. After college I will work with another therapist for about five years and then I will open my own office. I will be available to my clients twenty four seven. I want them to know someone is there for them, cares and will never judge them. Getting my doctrine in psychology is goal helping prove a persons worth is my dream and I will do everything an anything to achieve them.
The science world, as a whole, knows very little about the brain and nervous system and how the one organ and its companion system can make up a person. They also do not fully understand the diseases that genetically alter how the brain works. The neuroscience researchers are faced with a new puzzle every day. They are the pioneers of the neuroscience field. These are the people that I want to be considered part of. I have, as a result of wanting this future, explored the career environment and why it is the best choice for me.
Over the years, I have developed an innovative approach to teaching and conducting research with undergraduates through creating and presenting course materials in both laboratory and classroom settings. In my experience, the best teaching involves concrete, hands-on examples, so I engage students in my courses by encouraging the maximum laboratory participation possible.
As a transfer junior attending the University of Illinois at Urbana – Champaign, I am more than excited to seek for and to be a part of the research team. All the classes I had in my previous college, which is Green River College, a two-year college located in Washington, are non-research based classes, and there were no research opportunities available for students; therefore, I cannot stand to let myself blend into research coursework at the University of Illinois. I found the Undergraduate Research Apprentice Program, and I believe this would be an excellent opportunity for me to start building my research experiences at the University. By looking through the graduate mentors’ descriptions, I am amazed by all the works they have made. All of them are fascinating and intriguing to me. Nevertheless, I am drawn to these three topics the most; they consecutively are Rekha Balachandran’s, Kim Drager’s and Aseel Addawood’s.
...to time also will enable me to mentor the junior faculty or the students. All these will definitely be the stepping stones for my preparation for the PhD which is eventually my long term goal. Since there will be a lot of esoteric facts gaining disclosure in the near future in the field of neurosciences, I would like to exploit them and discover new therapies.
