I am thoroughly distraught, peeved even, at the audacity of these people. I simply cannot comprehend what goes on within their pea pod of a skull. How are they so persistent? Why? Well, whatever reason they have would probably sound imprudent to me. Those people, the scum of our planet, and my pet peeve; the people who complain about things they have no control over. Today, as usual, I can smell their ignorance. Those who physically bleed stupidity. The ones who constantly complain and are unable to feel the tactile calmness of letting things happen. They refuse to let it flow like the wind over your hand when you reach out the car window. Those who complain about things they cannot change. They grumble behind me, unsensing of my bitter hatred.
In Kate Manne’s article “Why I Use Trigger Warnings”, she argues that trigger warnings are an important feature to incorporate in an educator’s curriculum, but not as a safety cushion for millennials to fall on to avoid work and serious or uncomfortable topics. Using PTSD studies along with failed tests of exposure therapy for the foundation of her points, she explains that trigger warnings can help mentally prepare a student for what they are about to read instead of blindsiding them and throwing them into a potentially anxiety-induced state where they can’t focus. Manne also brings up how people can react when reading political or religious material in comparison towards reading possibly triggering material in order to differentiate between
In the book, The Unwanteds, by Lisa Mcmann, has so far been an interesting novel. It takes place in a town called Quill. In this town, they want everything to be the same and every to be smart and strong, but not creative. Alex Stowe is the main character and is set off to be killed with a few other teenagers. There are three groups to be selected to on the day of the Purge. There are the Unwanteds, which get eliminated because they are creative. There are the Necessary, which work hard. And, there are the Wanteds, which are a big role in the society. Alex, Meghan Ranger, Lani Haluki, Samheed Burkesh were chosen as some of the unwanteds to be eliminated. As they got sent off to be eliminated, Aaron Stowe was chosen to be a wanted, which is the highest ranking. Mr. Stowe and Mrs. Stowe are trying to make him forget about his brother, but in his head he cannot. High Priest Justine, Lani’s father, with some governors head to the Death farm to get rid of the kids. As they get to the farm, they enter with only the governors, but High Priest Justine stays on the bus with great di...
Yik Yak is probably the biggest social trend I’ve experienced while at West Point. It is relatively new and the anonymous interface gives people next level comfort especially in an environment where there are several restrictions on what you can say out loud. Yik Yak is useful, I would argue – here more so than at other colleges – CGR can send out quick updates and a significant amount of the cadet population would see them right away; questions about formation times, gym hours and several other things can be answered with ease. However, due to the anonymity, Yik Yak has also become a platform for anonymous hate and bashing. This isn’t new and everyone knows it’s happening. We had a PMEE session talking about why people should
Loneliness and Its Opposite, My Dangerous Desires and Beggars and Choosers collectively address gender, sex, sexuality, race, class, and bodily capacity. Loneliness and Its Opposite examines the ethics of disabled persons fulfilling their erotic desires. My Dangerous Desires discusses growing up queer, in a lower class biracial familyl. Lastly, Beggars and Choosers challenges how race, gender, and class can impact one’s reproductive choice. Each category of these books define the value of a body, and unfortunatley, in today’s world, some bodies hold a higher value than others.

“The ultimate tragedy is not the oppression and cruelty by the bad people but the silence over that by the good people.”~ Martin Luther King, Jr.
In “People Like Us”, the writer talks about tolerance and diversity in the United States. America has for a long time been cited as one of the most diverse countries. Upon investigation of that statement, one will find that it is a fact, for the country is filled with millions of individuals from different ethnic extractions, political affiliations, religion, socioeconomic status, personalities, interests, etc. However, according to “People Like Us”, instead of the population of the country uniting in its diversity and using that as a strength, individuals are trying really hard to distance themselves from others who are not like themselves, and to band themselves together with those who are like them. ...ism, unfolded in front of my eyes. This way of thinking, not wanting others to have what you have, which is present at large in everyone’s can make you feel superior, but in the end it only causes destruction. The sad thing is that there has been too many Major Ross in this world and they will keep existing. As their hate consumes all that is around them, and their perception of superiority destroys everyone, it shows me that in fact, only those who are capable of loving the undeserving, are the ones that rise above normal people. Anyone can hate, but few go through the trouble of deciding to love.
In “A Brief Encounter with the Enemy” by Said Sayrafiezadeh, Luke, a pessimistic soldier, walks down memory lane as he travels the path to get to the hill during his last recon. He remembers appreciating nature, encountering and writing to Becky, the first time he’d shot a gun, and Christmas leave. Luke identifies the moment when he realizes that he had joined the army for the wrong reason, after crossing the bridge his team built in order to cross the valley, and at the same time dreading the return to his former office job. Boredom and nothingness destroy him mentally as he waits for enemies to appear. When the enemies finally appear, he shoots them down and goes home the next day. Sayrafiezadeh proposes that expectations don’t always equate
How can I ever forget a time when I said a swear word in front of my mom. I was at the grocery store shopping with my mom and cousin. I was already upset because I got in trouble at home already. My cousin just kept messing with me and making fun of me and I just told her to “shut the fuck up.” Don’t you just hate those nagging little cousins that laugh at everything? I tried to say it as low as possible but my mom has ears like a hawk. Man I swear I never got slapped so hard a day in my life. From that day forward I swore that I wouldn’t say any swear words ever. Do you ever wonder where swearing words originated from? Or even people views on how they feel about them? Barbara Lawrence has an issue with swearing words because people use different terminology such as: “Broad”, “chick”, “piece of tail” and other sorts of harmful words to downgrade women. Bill Bryson on the other hand says that swear words are merely considered bad because they are considered bad. A similarity that both Lawrence and Bryson have is when they mentioned the word “ficken”, which is a German or Latin word meaning f***. The difference between the two are that Bryson explains the different words the Romans created and used over 1,500 years ago and Lawrence explains that some
A famous poet by the name of Horace once said, “Life is largely a matter of expectations.” Whether these expectations are produced within or those expressed by others, we go on living the standards of how we are supposed to; no more, no less. In the novel written by S.E. Hinton, “The Outsiders”, groups are often put in roles with specific limitations, some of which they put on themselves, while others were expectations from external sources. Moreover, in this novel conjectures played a major role in day to day situations displayed in the text. Both the Socs and the Greasers had roles with reputations to maintain; whether or not it was a good or bad reputation, they still felt the need to live up to the notions placed on them, both as individuals and as a group.
...ities in life and one of those is to realize when their thoughts and opinions are welcome and when they are not. These same people also know that they have the right to say what they want, they just should also know to have enough respect for the people to whom they are speaking. Everyone has rights and they should be able to keep them. Take advantage of your rights while you still have them.
In the article “Why Don’t we Complain?” William F. Buckley Jr. overstates the concept of complaining over the value of patience. American people are too meek, they cower to say anything about the small things in fear of being rude. Technology has taken its grasp and distracted the people from the central issues of government. This attitude has caused the effect that people partake little power when deciding to speak up. The people must complain about the small things or the big issues of life will never be spoken out against.
The term ‘comedy of menace’ is applied to a group of plays in which comedy is intertwined with elements of tragedy. The term was first used by David Campton as a subtitle of one of his plays, The Lunatic View: A Comedy of Menace. Though both comedy and tragedy are based on incongruities and contradictions, the driving force in comedy is humour and the driving force in tragedy is horror and menace. In comedy the humour is generated through dramatic techniques such as divergences, repetitiveness, surprise, illogical events and statements that often lead to outcomes which are quite contrary to what the audience expect and thereby cause laughter and amusement. In comedy of menace, two contradictory
