Zhang Jie provides us with a compelling story of a daughter reading her dead mother’s diaries. The story is about a mother who wanted to die with her secrets, but her daughter, Shanshan reads that her mother was in love with a man who was married a woman. He felt obligated to marry this woman because her father had given his life to cover for him. The story takes place in China and Geert Hofstede has measured China’s cultural distinctions and has made an accurate depiction of they’re power distance, long term orientation and individualism. The short story “Love Must Not Be Forgotten” by Zhang Jie, explains why long term orientation and power distance are important, while individualism is lower in China.
