After reading Karen’s story, I feel as though anyone can do anything they put their minds to as long as they are willing to work hard for it. Karen was girl who was very active and enjoyed playing sports. She also had a passion for education. When Karen was in high school, she had an accident in which she broke her back. Since her back was broken, Karen was left with an impairment that caused her to be in a wheelchair. Karen was the type of girl that wanted to do stuff on her own, so things got tough for her after her injury. For a while, she had to depend on people to do things for her. However, she was eventually able to get back to somewhat doing things by herself with the help of rehab. Karen was able to go to college and participate in

...hapter of her life. Mama has had her dream as far back as she can remember even though it has been shot down by others because of her ethnicity. However, many people hold onto a dream that may seem out of their reach such as Gail Devers, an African-American three time Olympic champion. Devers believed in her dream of becoming an Olympian when people told her that she would never be able to do it. She now advises others by saying, “Keep your dreams alive. Understand to achieve anything requires faith and belief in yourself, vision, hard work, determination, and dedication. Remember all things are possible for those who believe” (Devers).
When nothing is going right in life, what do you do? Do you just quit and hope for the best or do you pick yourself up and work even harder to succeed? Iliana Roman, a single mother of three children and an owner of a hair salon, kindles the message that individuals who face adversity can still persevere in life. According to Roman’s memoir “First Job”, it is never too late to turn your life around. At seventeen years, old Roman unexpectedly became pregnant. This event led to Roman’s life changing completely causing her to drop out of high school. She was nearly to the point of no return, she simply could not hold down a proper job, and the only way to support herself and her child is working three to four odd jobs every week. Roman presents her message of persevering in life by incorporating hyperbole, repetition, and pathos.
Although I have always been able to overcome obstacles thrown my way, I am aware that others have not. I have volunteered for fundraisers to raise funds for the community. I was a volunteer at a local hospital for 2 years and was able to interact with members of the community and learn more about the struggles that they go through. As a volunteer, I was not able to do much, but listening to them and relaying their message to their nurse did aid in making sure that their voices was heard and appropriate treatment was given to them. After becoming a nursing assistant, I was and still am able to help care for people in underserved communities. Some of them come in with no health insurance due to its cost, and others come in with illnesses and lifestyle choices that have torn their families apart. No matter the circumstance I will continue to do what I can to make sure that they have proper treatment and that they know that I will not judge them; I will care for them. I do not want to leave anyone behind because of his or her circumstance. Becoming a nurse will be one experience that will allow me to find myself in the care and service of others, to me, that is a beautiful
Disclosure of sentinel and adverse events has been an ongoing issue in healthcare. According to King, the Institute of Medicine reported that 44,000 to 98,000 people die every year from medical errors (King, 2009), According to the National Center for Ethics in Health Care, a sentinel event is a unanticipated death or outcome which is not related to the patient's underlying illness (National Center for Ethics in Healthcare, 2003). Josie's Story by Sorrel King is based on a true story which depicts a heartbreaking yet inspiring story of a young child whose live was taken due to a sentinel event. According to King, Josie died unexpectedly due to a sentinel event. A sentinel event is an event in which there has been an unanticipated outcome resulting in death or further complications. Socrates said “All men’s souls are immortal, but the souls of the righteous are immortal and divine.” In the story of Haunting Olivia by Karen Russell this is exactly what happened. Two years after the death of their litter sister Timothy and Waldo Swallow still search for some evidence of her. Olivia’s death hit her family hard and broke them apart. Her parents began traveling constantly to escape their pain and the failing of their marriage. While her brothers were left with their pitiless granana to fend for themselves and search for her body. The turning point of their search starts when they coincidentally find a pair of “Diabolical” pink googles. (Russell 26) Ordinarily finding a pair of pink googles in an abandoned boat wouldn’t seem out of place, but these googles were special; they were able to see the dead of the sea. Creatures throughout time that had passed in the ocean were now visible with these googles. With the loss of their sister weighing heavily on their minds the discovery of these googles could only be divine intervention by their extraordinary sister
Imagine what it would have been like to be cooped up in an attic during the Holocaust, with only very little space eight people in one little attic. For the Franks and the Van Danns it was eight people and a cat for most the time. With no one to talk to they have to keep everything in, unless they write it. In “The Diary of Anne Frank” the two families live this way. Anne and Peter were two of the characters who experienced this. Anne is a teenage girl who has a sister and lives during the Holocaust. Anne also had a lot of friends so she was popular; she loved to read and write in her journal. She was very loud and obnoxious. In Act one Scene two ,Peter says “I was always by myself, while you were in a big crowd of people.” This shows that Anne was very popular and is used to people; while Peter was not used to as much attention and people. Then in Act one Scene three, Mr.Van Dann says, “ Why can’t you be more like your sister Margot?” This proves that the Van Danns like Margot more than they like Anne ; it also proves they think Anne is obnoxious.
Anne Frank: The Diary of a Young Girl narrates the journey of adolescent Anne Frank during World War II. The diary allows insight into the changes Anne went through during the war after going into hiding to avoid persecution. Over the course of her time in hiding she matured, and used her diary to voice her innermost thoughts and desires. Anne’s diary shows how she came to terms with change as a result of her circumstances, and how she herself changed as a result.
In the book The Diary of Anne Frank by Frances Goodrich and Albert Hackett, there is an emotional and inspiring story about eight Jewish people hiding in a Secret Annex in Amsterdam, Holland, making an effort to survive in the harsh time period of the Holocaust. The time period and setting of this book is World War II and during the Holocaust. It is in 1942 through 1944, and in Amsterdam, Holland. The street name of this Secret Annex in the attic of the old office building of Otto Frank is Prinsengracht 263-267, 1016 GV. This influential play has the story about eight Jews going into hiding in the dreaded time of the Holocaust, and giving it all their will and strength to survive and get through the 1940s. The main characters of this book are Anne Frank and her family, the Van Pel Family, Fritz Pfeffer, Miep Gies, and Mr. Kraler. D-Day is an important event for these Jewish fellows, and it gave a lot of meaning to them. These Jews went through a lot of stress and mixed emotions. Anne says, “In spite of everything, I still believe that people are really good at heart” (Goodrich and Hackett 122). This quote shows the way that Anne can extract all of the bad in people and just see the good in people, even when they might be very notorious. D-Day gave these innocent Jewish members of the Annex a sense of hope and faith in these Allies to fight through German defenses to come rescue and save the Jews. Not only did D-Day give them hope and faith, but it also gave them a sense of safety and comfort each time the Allies get one step closer to aid.
Autism spectrum disorder, commonly known as autism, is a complex disability that affects a person’s ability to effectively communicate and interact with others (“What is Autism?”). Every year thousands are diagnosed with autism and is quite commonly recognized in children between the ages of two and three years old. Although these are only some of the most common struggles that people
My motivations in life have always been centered on my desire to maintain independence and happiness. My passions for physical therapy and health originated from those same motivations. Throughout my childhood, I repeatedly found myself in tough situations that required a level of self -dependency and perseverance that I don’t believe many young minds possess. My parents’ divorce put my life on a trajectory that could have easily been destructive. As a young girl, I realized that despite the lack of control I felt in my hardships growing up, I had control over my academic and future successes. I vowed that I would remember the struggles I faced and concentrate my energy on creating a better life for myself. To this day, it is important to me
Orphans are often forced to mature faster than any other child. Often, they are exploited and used for their labor at a young age, ridding them of any potential childhood. Moreover, orphans lack a sense of belonging and have trouble relying on anybody other than themselves because the people they loved broke the only trust they knew, this leads to an isolation among them and a struggle with social development. Throughout the texts and films such as Anne of Green Gables, Orphan Train, Sidekicks, and The Outsiders we see specific examples of how orphans are expected to behave more maturely than children who grow up in a secure family setting.
Anne Bradstreet starts off her letter with a short poem that presents insight as to what to expect in “To My Dear Children” when she says “here you may find/ what was in your living mother’s mind” (Bradstreet 161). This is the first sign she gives that her letter contains not just a mere retelling of adolescent events, but an introspection of her own life. She writes this at a very turbulent point in history for a devout Puritan. She lived during the migration of Puritans to America to escape the persecution of the Catholic Church and also through the fragmentation of the Puritans into different sects when people began to question the Puritan faith.
The movie “Front of The Class”, by Brad Cohen was about a man named Jimmy Wolk who wanted to be a teacher, but most schools would not hire him. Jimmy had Trieste; therefore, he made strange noises and strange moves with his neck. He had an interview after interview with schools ' principals, maybe after about 50 interviews finally one of the schools called him back. Ever since he was in elementary school, he wanted to be a teacher. He wanted to teach his students to never let anything or anyone get in the way of what you want to do in life. For example, don 't let your disability hold you back.
I am the product of divorced parents, poverty stricken environments, and a blended family, but I refuse to let that dictate the outcome of my life. At the age of ten, I had to assume the role of a fatherly figure to my three siblings, so I missed out on the typical childhood most would have had. I grew up in neighborhoods where gangs and criminal acts of violence were a pervasive occurrence, but I resiliently did not allow the peer pressures of others to force me to conform to their way of life. By the age of 15, I received my worker 's permit, and that allowed me the ability to help my mother financially in the absence of my father’s income. I worked the maximum amount of hours I could while balancing my academics and extracurricular school activities. I was a scholar athlete and triathlete in high school, and although I continuously faced much adversity, I still managed to be accepted to the University of California State, Bakersfield after I graduated from high school in 2005. Sadly, after
