Imagine what it would have been like to be cooped up in an attic during the Holocaust, with only very little space eight people in one little attic. For the Franks and the Van Danns it was eight people and a cat for most the time. With no one to talk to they have to keep everything in, unless they write it. In “The Diary of Anne Frank” the two families live this way. Anne and Peter were two of the characters who experienced this. Anne is a teenage girl who has a sister and lives during the Holocaust. Anne also had a lot of friends so she was popular; she loved to read and write in her journal. She was very loud and obnoxious. In Act one Scene two ,Peter says “I was always by myself, while you were in a big crowd of people.” This shows that Anne was very popular and is used to people; while Peter was not used to as much attention and people. Then in Act one Scene three, Mr.Van Dann says, “ Why can’t you be more like your sister Margot?” This proves that the Van Danns like Margot more than they like Anne ; it also proves they think Anne is obnoxious. …show more content…
On the other hand, Peter is a teenage boy who is an only child.
Peter loves his cat, he is lonely, and he is shy. He also is very awkward; not romantic. In Act one Scene five, Peter says “Don’t kick my cat; Mouschi goes I go.This proves that Peter is attached to his cat because Mouschi is his only friend. This also proves that Peter was lonely. In Act two Scene two, Peter asks Anne if she has ever kissed a boy; she said “ Yes twice once on the cheek by a man I didn’t know when he picked me up off the ice after I fell and once one the hand by dad’s friend. After she said that, she asked Peter if that counted Peter said “ No I wouldn’t count it.” Just like he doesn’t count getting kissed while being blindfolded. This proves that Peter is not romantic at
all. Anne and Peter are alike because they both like cats. Anne had to leave her cat at home unlike Peter. Another thing they have in common is they both have no one talk to besides each other. After a while, they both opened up to each other. They both are Jewish; and went to Jewish secondary school. They both were teenagers. There are many other ways they are alike but there was just a few. Being in hiding together made them close,it was only them and their families in the secret attic. Anne and Peter have differences which make them not like each other at first. But after a while they liked each other. It was hard to live during the Holocaust. Peter, Anne, and their families are a good example of some of the struggles Jewish people faced during this time. Anne and Peter started to like each other because they noticed they were in the same predicament and may not survive. They both had no one to talk to so they had to open up to each other sooner or later. They both felt like no one understood them; because they felt this way they needed to get along so they could have someone to talk to.
Act two, scene four fits into the overall structure of the play because this scene is the conflict or climax, the problem of the play. The play’s major theme is during tough times, have hope. This scene adds to the major theme of the play because when Franks, Van Daans, and Dussel were caught by the natzis, the families kept their hope. The play, “The diary of Anne Frank” is based off of the diary of Anne Frank, a teenager who spent more than two years hiding from Natzis during the Holocaust. When Anne’s family was found by Natzis, they were sent to concentration camps, where she died. During this part of the scene, Peter talks to Anne about how he cannot stand being cooped up anymore and Anne tries her best to comfort Peter. For example, In the play the Anne
There are many stories, diaries and books from the time of The Holocaust but arguably the most famous of them all is the story of Anne Frank. Anne Frank was a teenage Jewish girl who went into hiding in her fathers offices in Amsterdam, The Netherlands when the Nazis called up her older sister, Margot (Anne ??). Just before the call up, Anne had started to write a “diary” which she continued to write when she went into hiding with her family. Throughout the book Anne writes that her worst nightmare is to be discovered (Anne ??). The Franks when into hiding in 1941 in the Annex of the Opekta offices and were arrested by the Nazis in ???. After such a long period of time in hiding there are many suspects for who betraye...
“Then suddenly Peter grabs her awkwardly in his arms, kissing her on the cheek.” Anne Frank and Peter Van Daan mature as the play The Diary of Anne Frank documents their lives from when they go into hiding to their deaths. Anne (ages 13-15) and Peter (ages 15-18) both experience many changes, physically. mentally, and spiritually, as they grow closer to each other. On this topic Anne says, “There is one great change, however. A change in myself.” (Act II, Scene I, Page 600)
Van Daan bolstered her negative characterization amongst the families within the Secret Annex through her consistently antagonistic, pessimistic, and reactive behavior. Such can be found throughout the entirety of her time in hiding, as, in the words of Anne Frank, “‘Mrs. Van Daan [didn’t] need an opportunity to be unpleasant.’” (Page 756) One of the most incriminating events to support this concept of Petronella’s fondness for deliberate hostility occurred as Anne went to Peter’s room for a private discussion, fully prepared to ignore the older woman’s heckling based upon prior experience. Mrs. Van Daan stated, “‘My God, look at her! I don’t know what good it is to have a son. I never see him. He wouldn’t care if I killed myself.’” (Page 756) Anne then assured her mother of her good behavior, before asking Mrs. Van Daan for permission to continue on. Despite the respect Anne showed her through this action, Mrs. Van Daan refused to abandon the conflict, stating, “‘Are you asking me? I didn’t know I had anything to say about it.’” (Page 756) Mrs. Van Daan, in this circumstance, seemed to be purposely attacking Anne in a failed attempt to invoke the teenager’s retaliation, as well as spiting her son in the pursuit of sympathy. This hostility, in their situation, only served to worsen the overall mood and quality of life within the Annex, once again proving Mrs. Van Daan to be the most problematic of its
The setting is important for “The Diary of Anne Frank” because it sets the mood of the play. Anne talks about how their hiding place looks. “The rooms are dusty, the curtains are in rags. Chairs and tables are overturned.” (Anne Frank 701) The quote states that the room is in bad condition and not a very good environment to live. Anne also states the area of their hiding place. “It is the top floor of a warehouse and office building in Amsterdam, Holland.” (anne Frank 701) Anne states the location of their hiding location. Lasty, the area they were hiding was very dangerous for the Jews, and their hideout was a very small, old, and ugly place to live.
All Jews were suffering from the Holocaust in 1933. Six million Jews were murdered and and nine million were put in concentration camps. Every day a few hundred would die from either the work they had to do in the camps or the food. It was hard for most of the Surviving Jews because they have lost their loved ones. Many got separated from their families in the camps. Literature helps us honor and remember the victims of the Holocaust because it helps us understand the emotions the Jews were feeling in the camps and in hiding, and it helps us understand the experiences from personal stories
All over the world, it has been proven that people do awful things. We may not know why, or how someone would think of doing something so horrible. Some people just do it out of hatred, and others have something going on in their life that is causing them to act that way. Overall, people mean well and are good at heart. People also all over the world have shown selfless acts of kindness, by helping one another when they, themselves are in need. People may have feuds with one another, but at one point in time they have an appreciation for one another.
Frank is nice and quiet, although I think she doesn’t understand Anne and that’s why Anne doesn’t like to respect her mother. Mrs. Frank doesn’t try to understand Anne, which is why I think Anne doesn’t listen to her mom. Margot is quiet, she respects her parents and the other adults. Mr. Van Daan is selfish, his son Peter isn't selfish, he is embarrassed by his father. Mr. Van Daan complains that there's food, he’s always saying that Peter needs to get rid of his cat, Moushi. Mrs. Van Daan isn’t selfish, but she is rude, Anne accidentally spilled milk on Mrs. Van Daan’s fur coat and Anne apologized, Mrs. Van Daan yelled at Anne “I could just kill you, I could just kill you right now”. Peter is shy and he doesn’t talk much. He doesn’t like to be around Anne and Margot, but he doesn’t like to be around anyone and he doesn’t like anyone to go his
She states, ¨what a lovely, lovely day! Aren´t the clouds, beautiful?¨ By saying this, Anne is looking at the beautiful things in life. Furthermore, Anne made that statement because she is trying to forget about everything that is happening. Rather than spending the time she had left living negatively she decided to be positive. This is another reason that proves, Anne was different from others. She had a bright mind and had hoped for the war to end so that she could be free again. She had hope that everyone has a good heart and that people do evil things, but that doesn´t mean their heart is evil.Even though Anne lived in hard times that didn´t stop her from having fun. She still tried to dance and mess around while she still could. In the play it would talk about how Anne would jump around and ask her family to dance with her before they forget how to. Additionally, Anne would mess around with Peter, she tried to loosen him up and make him more fun. She always went into his room and had conversations with
Living during World War Two must have been an awful things to deal with, but imagine being stuck in an attic with your family as a teenager, or having to move away from all your friends and family against your will? In the non-fiction book Diary of Anne Frank by Frances Goodrich and Albert Hackett tells the story of a girl named Anne who has to move into an attic with 9 others to hide from the Nazi’s during World War 2. Anne isn't liking all of this but soon finds the friends she needs in the attic. In the realistic book The Boy and The Striped Pajamas by John Boyne, it tells the story of a German boy whose father gets promoted and has to move away from all his friends. He doesn’t like moving but soon finds a Jewish boy who lives inside Auschwitz. Both Anne and
Anne had the ability to talk to her sister but she felt that her sister was the golden child and did everything right. This is important because for the rest of Anne’s life she had to express herself through her diary until she was able to connect with Peter. Anne’s diary changed Anne life because she able to express herself without the worry of hurting her family. Kitty, the diary was Anne’s best friend and the only “person” that new all of her secrets. In addition, “I’m boiling with rage, and yet I mustn’t show it. I’d like to stamp my feet, scream, give Mummy a good shaking, cry, and I don’t know what else, because of the horrible words, mocking looks, and accusations which are leveled at me repeatedly every day” (Anne Frank). This shows that Anne is having a difficult time with her family while in hiding. Anne’s diary, Kitty, held Anne’s secrets while she was in hiding. Anne had a hard time dealing with her family and the Van Danns, she only had one way to express herself, through her diary. Anne believes that every day her family and the Van Danns are trying to attack her and make her feel as if the world is out to get her. This is important
The photo below is of Anne Frank, a young Jewish girl that ended up experiencing the violent acts of Hitler’s demonic plan ‘The Final Solution’ to kill off all of the Jews. Anne shows signs of maturing in regards to her mother in the diary entry January 2, 1944 by regretting what she said about her mother in her diary, tries to understand the Anne a year ago and forget her, and whatever Anne has to say harsh words to put them on paper than saying them directly to Mummy.Anne makes mistakes in her past but matures and regrets of all she has done in her past.
