Karen Armstrong’s, “Is a Holy War Inevitable?,” is an argumentative explanation to Islamic fundamentalism and Muslim extremism. Throughout the essay, Armstrong continually makes the point that Muslim extremism is not a result from the hatred of America, but from the hatred of American policies. She even goes on to explain how the United States is viewed the Great Satan. Western civilization is viewed by conservative members of the Islamic faith as being faithless and unethical. Karen describes how Western civilizations, including the United States and Britain, have become examples of modernization that much of the world wants to replicate. Overall, the essay, “Is a Holy War Inevitable?,” analyzes how Muslim extremism developed because of Islamic countries turning towards modernization. The Muslims believed that the United States had influenced each of the former fundamentalist countries to modernize, which is why extremists began to hate the policies of the United States and other Western civilizations. They feared annihilation due to the lack of faith. “Is a Holy War Inevitable?” uses explanations to argue the main point.
To describe how Western policy is the root of Muslim extremists, Karen writes, “Muslims, see the rage rooted in Islamic cultures. Some feel a civilizational inevitability: that Islam is entirely incompatible with Western culture and that the West has long been heading for a major confrontation with the Islamic world” (Armstrong 43). Another way that Armstrong tries to persuade readers to agree with her is by using multiple historical illustrations. For example, to describe how modernization is contagious to other countries, Karen refers back to the 19th century Egyptian writer, Rifa’ah al-Tahtawi, who began to be captivated by European Enlightenment and modernization. Additionally, Armstrong tries to explain the problem of modernization taking time by informing the readers that European and American modernization took 300 years to develop. She uses this to show that many Islamic countries are trying to copy the Western civilization format overnight, creating a lack of religion. Lastly, Karen Armstrong uses comparative strategies to portray Islamic views. She compares the United States to the Great

Overall, Karen Armstrong’s “Is a Holy War Inevitable?” is an argument that uses definitions, historical context, and comparisons to explain how the hate that Muslim extremists have has developed overtime. The way that Armstrong writes this essay, in a way, enrages skeptics and encourages them to backlash in disapproval. “Is a Holy War Inevitable?” is an interesting read, but can prove to be confusing at times, as the main points seem to change throughout the essay. As children, we are often told stories, some of which may have practical value in the sense of providing young minds with lessons and morals for the future, whereas some stories create a notion of creativity and imagination in the child. In Karen Armstrong’s piece, “Homo Religiosus”, a discussion of something similar to the topic of storytelling could translate to the realm of religion. Armstrong defines religion as a, “matter of doing rather than thinking” (17) which she describes using an example in which adolescent boys in ancient religions, who were not given the time to “find themselves” but rather forced into hunting animals which ultimately prepares these boys to be able to die for their people, were made into men by the process of doing.

For a second, the U.S. stood still. Looking up at the towers, one can only imagine the calm before the storm in the moment when thousands of pounds of steel went hurdling into its once smooth, glassy frame. People ran around screaming and rubble fell as the massive metal structure folded in on itself like an accordion. Wounded and limping from the 9/11 attacks on the World Trade Center, America carried on, not without anger and fear against a group of innocent Americans, Muslim Americans. Nietzsche’s error of imaginary cause is present in the treatment of Muslim Americans since 9/11 through prejudice in the media, disregard of Muslim civil liberties, racial profiling, violence, disrespect, and the lack of truthful public information about Islam. In this case, the imaginary cause against Muslims is terrorism. The wound has healed in the heart of the U.S. but the aching throb of terrorism continues to distress citizens every day.

Islam is portrayed and is commonly accepted as the most violent and largest direct threat to the West. This is a generalization made by most of the West, but it is not particularly the West or the Islamic people’s fault. There is constant turmoil in Islamic countries in the Middle East and these conflicts are what make the news in the West. The only representation in the media that the Islamic nation gets is that of war. Though most Islamic people are not violent, the select few that do participate in terrorist groups give the rest of the Islam nation a bad image.

In both given articles, “The Roots of Muslim Rage” by Bernard Lewis, and “The Roots of Muslim Rage Revisited” by Nicolaas J.E. van der Zee, argue about the enhancement of the Muslim fundamentalism with different perspectives; however, I believe that Lewis’ view may be quiet misleading to the actual perception. Lewis indicates that Muslim fundamentalism is conceived through the Muslim community’s oppression and dissatisfaction with the West’s political involvement, as well as “Islam is a source of aggression” . In defiance of Lewis’ opinion, the word ‘Islam’ comes from the word peace as well as the will of submission to God. As an Arab American, a Muslim and a woman writer, Mohja Kahf challenges the stereotypes and misrepresentation of Arab and Muslim women.
