Two characters that I choose for this assignment are a careless and impulsive character in this movie, John Bender, or known as “the criminal”, and a character that being known as a nerd, that is Brian Johnson, or known as “the brain”. In reference to Piaget’s stages of cognitive development, I categorized Bender and Brian in a formal operational stage, that is the final stage of the cognitive development stage. It is because, both of them shows characteristic of adolescent egocentrism. For Bender, we can clearly see that he seems like he do not take anything seriously, and his behavior also shows that he do not want to make any commitment. For example, Bender had many girlfriends before but he seems like he did not put any commitment to each and every one of them and continuously searching for another. In reference to Brian, we can see that he just takes on the role that his parents assigned to him that is to be a nerd. He do not even questioned about what his parents asked him to do, but he just accept it. Based on the opening scene, we can see that John Bender’s parents did not sent him to the library at all. It shows that his parents do not take care and concern about him and it shows characteristics of neglectful parenting. Besides, Brian Johnson is most likely to have authoritarian parents. Piaget created four stages of cognitive development, some of which can be seen in the film “Cheaper by the Dozen”. A few examples of characters that display Piaget’s theory are the twins, who are in the preoperational stage and lack the concept of conservatism, and the mastermind, who is in the concrete operational stage and show's the concept of decentralism. Jean Piaget was one of the most prominent researchers of the 20th century in the field of psychology and human development. He concentrated his attention on the biological influences on the psychological portrait of the person and developmental stages. Piaget pointed out that the development of a person passes through certain stages; each stage can be characterized by specific features. He argued that learning about the world was possible through personal experience. However, his inspiration of developing the idea of cognitive growth and changes of people came while researching child behavior. Moreover, it is important to note that his research was based on the observation of behavior of his own three children (Berlin, Zeanah & Lieberman, 2008).
For this paper I have decided to write about someone imaginary to associate with Piaget’s Cognitive Development. The reason that I have chosen to write about someone imaginary is because I have not seen every of the stages of cognitive development in someone I know and I do not remember all of mine, so I feel that it would be in my better interest to write about an imaginary person. He believed when humans are in their infancy, childhood, and adolescence they try to understand the world through experiments. During cognitive development children are little scientists that create theories, experiment, and conclusions on how to adapt to the world. By the time children become adults they will be able to put into affect everything they learned and utilize the skills they need to live in this world. Everyone fits perfectly into the Piaget’s Four Stages of Cognitive Development, even myself.

John Bender’s development throughout the movie was a result of his environment’s elements and the idea of looking glass self. I believe he initially imagined that others perceived him as weak. I think he tried to compensate by constantly battling with his peers and one’s above him, so society would identify him as tough. The next element I observed was his conclusion of how others evaluated him. He knew others did not like his sense of toughness, but I think he continued to act in that manner because of his social agents that he explained. Family is an agent that contributed to his development of self-concept. His poor class and crummy interactions with his father harmed his initial motivations, values, and beliefs. Jean Piaget’s cognitive theory states that a child goes through many set stages in his or her cognitive development. It is through these stages that the child is able to develop into an adult. The first of these stages is called the sensorimotor period in which the child’s age ranges from 0-2 years old. During this sensorimotor period of a child’s development, the child’s main objective is to master the mechanics of his or her own body. Towards the end of this period, the child begins to recognize himself as a separate individual, and that people and objects around him or her have their own existence. The child, however, does not have a sense of object permanence meaning that when an object is taken away, the child no longer believes that that object actually exists. As the child nears the end of this period of development, he may seek an item that has been hidden in the location where he or she last saw it, but does not look elsewhere (Smith). During the preoperational period, which lasts from age 2-7, the child has come a long way in his or her cognitive development since his or her birth. In this period, the child has a very basic understanding of the inner workings of his or her mind and is ready to interact with their environment in a more symbolic way. A limitation during this period is known as egocentrism. The child has a hard time realizing that though there are many other people and things in their world, none of them are more important that the child himself. The child believes that his point of view is the only point of view of the world. This is caused by his inability to put himself in someone’s else’s shoes (Smith).
