In I Am Nujood, Age 10 and Divorced, a young girl’s harsh reality directs her to take drastic measures to end her living nightmare. Nujood Ali, the main character of the book, begins by describing her observations at the courthouse. Despite feeling out of place, Nujood was there for one specific reason—she wanted a divorce!
Nujood shares her background by introducing the village of Khardji, the place where she was born. Nujood states, “women are not taught how to make choices [where she’s from]” (Ali & Minoui, 2010, p. 23). To exemplify the power men hold within her country, Nujood shares her mother’s story. At the age of 16, Nujood’s mother was married off to Ali. Four years later, Ali decided to enlarge the family by choosing a second wife. Nujood’s mother had no say. Nujood’s divorce case in a place like Yemen brought plenty of publicity. Feminist organizations, TV networks, newspapers, and film cameras all together flooded the courtroom. Despite Nujood’s husband and father lying to the judge in court, it was all of Nujood’s supporters, who helped her win the court case. Instead of singing a divorce chant, the victory proceeded to a Happy Birthday chant because Nujood never had a birthday. Nujood’s mother had borne a total of 16 children, and therefore were too many birthdays to recall. So this special day (April 15, 2008) was adopted as Nujood’s birthday.
The bravery Nujood demonstrated opened the doors for many other child brides. The issue of underage marriage had never gained as much exposure as it had after Nujood was publicly recognized as the youngest divorcee in the world. An interesting aspect of reading Sunjata is that it allows the reader to get a glimpse into the past. An unmissable trait that the story brings up is the power and control that women hold within their marriages and families overall. Part of this power comes from the West African people carrying on their family through a matrilineal system. Familial ties are a significant motif in Sunjata with even the storyteller tracing his ancestry back to the strong women told about in the oral tale. The matrilineal system means that instead of children taking the name of their father, as seen in many European societies, they would take the name of their mother and hold closer to the ties of her ancestors. Dadi is a group of people in northern India, the village consist of five hundred families, people who are related by ties of marriage, blood, or social/ legal affirmation. These families live with an established residence of patrilocal, meaning the household consist of the husband’s parents, brothers and their brother’s wives and children. Dadi’s families have post-marital patterns and pros and cons for each of the family members. Mosuo on the other hand is an ethnic group from southwestern China who also live in a patrilocal community but have matrilineal ties meaning they help each others family but live with their own. In this society the women have different positions than in the Dadi society.

The marriage between Stella and Stanley has become a very dysfunctional relationship. Stella being attracted to a man of forceful nature becomes blindly accustomed to the everyday routine of an abusive relationship. Many women in the 20th century and even today put up with household abuse, many who were unable or unwilling to leave. One case that appears time and time again is the high abuse in the traditional custom of child marriages. In rural areas, such as those of Afghanistan child marriages are common, even more common is the abusive and controlling nature towards the underage brides. Much like Stella’s marriage, these underage brides will live in abuse, unable to speak against their husbands, and be tormented and humiliated throughout their marriage.
The first thing people usually do when encountering or learning about a culture or civilization different from their own is to instantly begin comparing and contrasting the two, especially the family unit. The vast differences between Bambara, Fulani, and Muslim cultures in various parts of Afrca alone are great. Although she got pregnant by someone other than her husband they did not look at the good and joyful moments the child could bring. Having a baby can be stressful, especially being that the village was not doing so great. The baby could have brought guilt, anger, depression, and loneliness to the aunt, family, and village lifestyle because having a baby from someone other than your husband was a disgrace to the village, based on the orientalism of women. The Women of the Middle East have played substantial roles for their corresponding countries since the advent of colonialism in the region. Middle Eastern women have worked in all types of fields including medicine, education, agriculture, government, private sector, and even defense. They have kept roofs over their family’s heads while their husbands were away in wars, or even in foreign countries to work in jobs that they could not find in their own countries. The roles of women in the countries of Yemen and Oman are no exception, but while they still find ways to contribute to their country, they care constantly stereotyped, discriminated, and ridiculed by men who are known and unknown to them. Every culture has several similarities and differences that impact the way they do things. Several of these cultures have distinct traits and traditions that make them differently from other cultures. I believe these differences make each culture different and unique. The two cultures that I have chosen to compare and contrast with each other is Kenya and India. In this paper I will discuss the similarities and differences in each of the culture’s families in context, marital relationships, and families and aging. These are important aspects of these cultures and to examine them will give me a better knowledge of both of these cultures.
