1) In the book “How it feels to be colored me”, the author Zora Neale Hurston explains how she one day “became colored”. Till the age of 13, she lived in a “Little Negro town of Eatonville,Florida”(Pg 144) The town was full of colored people and the only time she would ever meet white people was when they, “passed through the town going to or coming from Orlando.”(Pg 144) But one day when she was 13 she was sent to a school in Jacksonville, she was no longer “Zora of Orange County”,but “now a little colored girl.”(Pg 145) She no longer lived in a town full of colored people, but now lived in a city full of white people, where she was constantly reminded that she is a granddaughter of a formal slave. The second time she used compare and contrast to tell her story was when she moved to the new school. Zora said, “the world to be won and nothing to be lost. It is thrilling to think - to know that for any act of mine, I shall get twice as much praise” to show that the world is “to the strong regardless of a little pigmentation more or less.”(Pg 146) The author is comparing and contrasting the difference between colored and white people by saying, white people are known to excel and when colored people do, it is something of great news and something to receive praise over. The third time she uses it is when she talks about when she feels most colored. “ I feel my race. Among the thousands of white persons, I am a dark rock surged upon and overswept, but through it all, I remain myself.”(Pg 147) Through this she is comparing the difference between colored and white by explaining how small she feels among the thousands of white people.
