Homecoming is a widely known tradition that every high school student looks forward to every year in the fall time. It consists of a great deal of preparation and activities that lead up to the big night of glitz and glamour. Students get to soak in the excitement with activities like spirit week, football games, homecoming court, and the pep rally. Everyone knows that the typical preparation of homecoming is all about the dress and hair, tuxes and ties, tickets and rides. All those tiny things will lead the dance to be reminisced after all the students graduate. Homecoming is stressful for the members of the Student Government due the pressure of topping the dances from all previous years. It takes a ton of teamwork and cooperation, not to mention a lot of spare time to do everything before time runs out. To begin the start of the first step of preparation, the members of the club has to sit down and call out ideas for the theme of the party. At Durant High School, a theme that was chosen one year by the members was Rio. It was extremely exotic and such fun vibe that Student Government agreed would be enjoyed by the students that attended the dance. After the club figured the theme, they needed to contact a DJ for the dance. It is crucial to have an excellent DJ to liven up the party and keep kids wanted to attend the rest of the dances. The more students that want to go to homecoming raises more money to get amenities the school need like new water fountains or a stadium. In Hillsborough County, many schools call the best DJ around to play at the event, DJ Ron. Durant High School’s SGA has worked with DJ Ron for 3 years. DJ Ron knows exactly what is expected for a memorable night. He supplies the dance with fog, laser light, and stage dancers. The stage dancers that volunteered were Brazilian dancers for the Rio theme and they interacted with the students that attended that year. Members of Student Government are expected to all pitch in with making decorations. It takes weeks to complete especially because the decorations are handmade and intricate. Rio decorations included centerpieces with giant feathers and hand embossed dollar store rhinestones with Mardi Gras beads dangling from each feather made for 15 tables. Handmade mask was also added to the decorations of venue. Cardboard was cut into the shape of a masquerade mask, wrapped in vibrant crackle paper with gem stones hot glued to each one. Decorations are key to giving the atmosphere an authentic feel of the theme. Once all the decorations are ready to be place, the club members and their parents spend a whole day setting up for the upcoming night. It can be stressful with everyone’s efforts to make it prefect, but in the long run the place becomes outstanding to look
