Choose one of the racial and/or cultural groups impacted by events depicted in “Welcome to Shelbyville,” and explain how that group responded to the challenges of surviving/thriving in this small, multicultural community. The Somalian Muslim groups, I feel were the most impacted by moving to Shelbyville. These people do not only share different cultures than the locals but also a different religion. This caused a bigger uproar for the people living in Shelbyville, because this was something they were not used too. It was easyt o spot the differences between the Somalis and the locals. They invited the writer to dinner along with other people so the locals could get to know the Somalis and so they could help clear up misconceptions. They held another event at their house were they invited the women from the community and held a dinner. At this event the Somalis talked about why they fled their homes and come to Shelbyville. One of the girls even asked if the war would come to America since they were here. The somalis helped clear up that there would be no war here. This made the locals feel more calm about the situations and were able to start trusting there Somalia neighbors. According to the Washington Post, “We must remain compassionate toward refugees but we also need to make sure that we use common sense…”(Eilperin). As I did sense that the locals did want to try and accept the Refugees, however, they had never met these types of people before so they of course wanted to be careful. Which makes sense, you can expect someone to trust someone right away. The locals were trying to be careful and use common sense and keep their guard up. This was a cultural shock to the Somalis as they were not treated in a more positive manner. My family immigrated here when I was only five years old. After working hard for fourteen years we were granted citizenship of the United States. I remember the day we got our citizenship it was an emotional time. My family had given up so much back home in India just to come to the United States for a better life. We honestly did not think this day would come where we would become citizens and have the ability to pick our President. I personally feel like this is what the Gonzalez family must have felt. They worked so hard and having the ability to vote represents the hard work you have put in. By being able to vote and see the inauguration makes you believe that yes, you are an American. The president is your president too just like every other resident here. You do belong here and your vote does matter. Throughout the American South, of many Negro’s childhood, the system of segregation determined the patterns of life. Blacks attended separate schools from whites, were barred from pools and parks where whites swam and played, from cafes and hotels where whites ate and slept. On sidewalks, they were expected to step aside for whites. It took a brave person to challenge this system, when those that did suffered a white storm of rancour. Affronting this hatred, with assistance from the Federal Government, were nine courageous school children, permitted into the 1957/8 school year at Little Rock Central High. The unofficial leader of this band of students was Ernest Green.
During the 1950s, African Americans struggled against racial segregation, trying to break down the race barrier. Fifteen year old Melba Patillo Beals was an ordinary girl, until she’s chosen with eight other students to integrate Central High in Little Rock, Arkansas. They are named the Little Rock and fight through the school year, while students and segregationists are threatening and harassing them. Warriors Don’t Cry—a memoir of Beals’ personal experience—should be taught in schools because it teaches students to treat each other equally and to be brave, while it also shows the struggle of being an African-American in the 1950s. Another lesson taught in the retelling is that everyone can make a change.
Christopher Paul Curtis wrote The Watsons Go to Birmingham—1963 throughout the course of 1995. The novel follows the Watsons, a black family living in Flint, Michigan during the Civil Rights Era. In a historical context, 1963 and the early 1990s have far more in common than one would expect. The Civil Rights Act was passed in 1964 following the church bombing in Birmingham, and yet race-based discrimination remains a problem even in our modern society via passive racism. This paper will analyze the ways in which Curtis’ The Watsons Go to Birmingham—1963 draws parallels between the time in which his is writing during and the time in which he is writing about. This analysis will also shed light on what can be called the “white standard,” wherein all things white are “good” or “better” and anything not-white is “bad.”
The transition of being a black man in a time just after slavery was a hard one. A black man had to prove himself at the same time had to come to terms with the fact that he would never amount to much in a white dominated country. Some young black men did actually make it but it was a long and bitter road. Most young men fell into the same trappings as the narrator’s brother. Times were hard and most young boys growing up in Harlem were swept off their feet by the onslaught of change. For American blacks in the middle of the twentieth century, racism is another of the dark forces of destruction and meaninglessness which must be endured. Beauty, joy, triumph, security, suffering, and sorrow are all creations of community, especially of family and family-like groups. They are temporary havens from the world''s trouble, and they are also the meanings of human life.
But unlike Gregory’s tale, Wilkins’s story lacks figurative language. Though he does use descriptive language, like when he described what his white neighbors thought about him and his African American family moving in: “The prevailing wisdom in the neighborhood was that we were spoiling it and that we ought to go back where we belonged (or, alternatively ought not intrude where we not wanted.)” (Wilkins). The main problem is that there are no metaphors, similes, symbols, alliterations, and so on. But a strong point of this piece is that it is to the point. All the details he put in his story made sense and helped make his point of equality clear. One such example of this is when he describes his teacher Dorothy Bean, “I later came to know that in Grand Rapids, she was viewed as a very liberal person who believed, among other things, that Negroes were equal.” (Wilkins). This detail helps to establish her as a guiding force to help the other students see Wilkins as an equal. Another great strength in this story was its clear organization of the events that took place. It began with an explanation of the setting, how he was treated, how the teacher treated him, and ended with him being accepted by the other students. Everything was chronologically ordered and easy to follow, which also made it a more enjoyable
Through the film “In the Heat of the Night” racial tensions are high, but one character, the Chief of Police, Gillespie overcomes racial discrimination to solve a murder. The attitudes that he portrays in the film help us understand the challenges in changing attitudes of Southern white town towards the African Americans living there.
In Dalton Conley’s memoir “Honky”, written in 2000, Conley talks about his experience of switching schools to a primarily white elementary school. He discusses the major differences between his prior, very diverse school and his new, primarily caucasian school. He focuses on the main topics of race and class, and how they enhanced the differences between these two schools.
Mississippi serves as a catalyst for the realization of what it is truly like to be a Negro in 1959. Once in the state of Mississippi, Griffin witnesses extreme racial tension, that he does not fully expect. It is on the bus ride into Mississippi that Griffin first experiences true racial cruelty from a resident of Mississippi.
Summary: This story is about racism in the south and how it affects the people it concerns. It starts out with Jefferson being sentenced to death for a crime that he did not commit. He was in the wrong place, at the wrong time, and because he was black, they assumed he did it. Grant Wiggins is told to go up to the jail and convince Jefferson that he is a man. At first he doesn’t know how to make Jefferson see that he is a man, but through visiting Jefferson, talking to Vivian and witnessing things around the community, he is able to reach Jefferson, convince him that he was a man.
Desmond King and Stephen Tuck’s “De-Centring the South: America’s Nationwide White Supremacist Order after Reconstruction” was focused on how white supremacy flourished in not only the South, but in the North and West as well, debunked that the North and West were much better places to live regarding racial discrimination, and how African Americans had lacking representation in the political sphere. Race shapes every part of the South because race relations, slavery, and the Civil War were what caused the South to declare itself as an “other” in the first place. A Lesson Before Dying illustrates a time of poor race relations in the south and the impacts racism had on all aspects of society. Although race relations in the South have continually improved since the 1940s, southerners will always navigate the dichotomy of protecting Southern history and memory while striving for racial equality and justice.

(1) Ozark, Missouri is the place where I lived for the first nineteen years of my life. I was raised in a middle class, interracial, family consisting of Irish and Mexican bloodlines. My mom and I are white, my step-dad is Hispanic, and my brother is White/Hispanic. The majority of my friend’s family’s socioeconomic status is in the $200,000 to $300,000 income bracket. Our town also includes the fourth largest Assembly of God church in the United States with an average attendance of 8, 850. The focus of the column is about the plight of African-American male students who have begun to enter the white prep schools in the south. Marvin Barnard and Bill Alexander were two black teenage boys who were among the first African-Americans to integrate into Virginia Episcopal School, an all-white prep school in Lynchburg, Virginia. They recognized the opportunity that they were given to start a trend of change in society, and throughout the article, these students challenge themselves to rise above the hate and unfair expectations put on them by their peers. As the title states, they begin to excel in the classroom while also keeping their noses clean. Their diligence and hard work helped to pave the way for other black students to enter these segregated schools. While as a result, it seemed that these students were unfairly pressured and their teenage lives were left unfulfilled because of the decisions they made to behave the right way.
