The following poem addressed from Home Girls Make Noise is Beyond Every Ceiling Is the Sky by Darlene Anita Scott and B-Girl Blues (Artwork) by Darrell Gane-McCalla. I have decided to do my first analyst on it because the title called my attention. In other words, we all have options and we should not always play safe. We have to allow ourselves to take risks even if we do not know where it will take you. For example, in my case, I have always loved swimming and I have a friend who has a lifeguard license and wanted to get one too but I've never put myself out there because I was always worried of what everyone else taught me because of the way I looked. Therefore, If it wasn't for her I would still be thinking ‘what if’ she helped me get Although, I did not understand the verse I kept re-reading it and the choice of words are what I believe through me off when she used the words ‘pawned’ or when she states ‘voice of porn dipped in politically correct slang’. It can be argued that when she said what she was trying to show the coming of age “For which she decided to sell her soul; Ho’ for dough hustles weren’t bringing home the bacon, So she upped the ante to achieve her goal”( Scott 48). The quote mentioned is important to them poem because it shows the struggle someone went through and what she did to fix the situation in her life by moving forward and not letting a minor setback stop her accomplishing her duties which is empowering for individuals who read this poem. In addition, the poem shows a clear image of what the author wants the audience to picture once they read the following However, not everyone who reads the line will picture the same image I interpreted when I read it. I believe that depending on one’s background and the way we grew up the imagery will vary because some will see it as an act of weakness, but others might see as if she was coping with all her inner battles and still shine through and do what has to be done. To sum up, depending on what you have been through as an individual the whole meaning of the poem will vary. Lastly, the vocabulary used is not formal since she used words such as ‘kinda’ ‘brothas’ ‘sistas’ ‘nigga. As equally as important, the artwork created by McCalla is displayed in the paragraph describing the meaning of the painting in case individuals did not understand it. Since the artwork is the main subject the painting should of being displayed on a bigger scale and not just under the summary. Hence it would give the audience a clear view of what the artist was trying to
Authors use many different types of imagery in order to better portray their point of view to a reader. This imagery can depict many different things and often enhances the reader’s ability to picture what is occurring in a literary work, and therefore is more able to connect to the writing. An example of imagery used to enhance the quality of a story can be found in Leyvik Yehoash’s poem “Lynching.” In this poem, the imagery that repeatably appears is related to the body of the person who was lynched, and the various ways to describe different parts of his person. The repetition of these description serves as a textual echo, and the variation in description over the course of the poem helps to portray the events that occurred and their importance from the author to the reader. The repeated anatomic imagery and vivid description of various body parts is a textual echo used by Leyvik Yehoash and helps make his poem more powerful and effective for the reader and expand on its message about the hardship for African Americans living
Piper’s use of imagery in this way gives the opportunity for the reader to experience “first hand” the power of words, and inspires the reader to be free from the fear of writing.
One of the first things that Landau appeals to her readers is the aspect of imagery. Imagery is made up of the five senses, which are sight, hearing, touch, smell, and taste. The first sense of sight is seen through out the whole poem, specifically in the first two lines,
In the end, the poem is looking to show what actions can do in the long run. It teaches us to be very cautious with everything we do since it can affect the people around us. It can have good or bad
“Summer’s Choice” gives us insight on a student who is “at-risk” when in reality she is extremely talented. The author showed us why we view these students as non-beneficial members to society but then we understand how we are entirely wrong. Through the use of pathos in sights and sounds we get a first-hand look at these students who are viewed in the wrong way because all these students need is an opportunity to be successful in
This poem shines importance on going through thing s and how you have to start some place. I found this book very inspirational and it has refreshed my perspective on life. My people that came before me went through so much just so that I could even have to opportunity or ability to read this book and wright a review on my own.
The poem starts with the line, “This girlchild was born as usual,” which suggests that as soon as a girl is born, society already expects her to learn the role she will soon play in when she hits puberty (1). Thus, showing why we are given dolls as little girls to illustrate how we should act and appear according to society. After we learn all the roles we will soon take part in, “the magic of puberty,” hits and girls immediately begin applying the ideals to their own lives (5). As if this attempt to conform is not enough we have other people telling us we are not to perfect. “You have a great big nose and fat legs,” says a classmate to the girl (6). This type of pressure can slowly but surely destroy even the little confidence women do have in themselves.
In other words, the words used by the poet are very powerful to give a vivid imagery of the poem to the readers which persuade them for the deep interpretation of this poem.
The poem also focuses on what life was like in the sixties. It tells of black freedom marches in the South how they effected one family. It told of how our peace officers reacted to marches with clubs, hoses, guns, and jail. They were fierce and wild and a black child would be no match for them. The mother refused to let her child march in the wild streets of Birmingham and sent her to the safest place that no harm would become of her daughter.
The daughter alludes to an idea that her mother was also judged harshly and made to feel ashamed. By the daughters ability to see through her mothers flaws and recognize that she was as wounded as the child was, there is sense of freedom for both when the daughter find her true self. Line such as “your nightmare of weakness,” and I learned from you to define myself through your denials,” present the idea that the mother was never able to defeat those that held her captive or she denied her chance to break free. The daughter moments of personal epiphany is a victory with the mother because it breaks a chain of self-loathing or hatred. There is pride and love for the women they truly were and is to be celebrated for mother and daughter.
A wise man once said, “Things turn out best for those who make the best of the way things turn out” –John Wooden. Many people can surely agree with this statement and can relate to it in different ways. The saying about the glass half full or half empty comes to mind: if you stay positive and never get too down on yourself, then everything will work out. Based on a true story, Margarita Engle uses symbolism and imagery, to create vivid images and demonstrates how one girl’s courage changed music, in the poem “Drum Dream Girl”.
... turning some who can be seen as a blank canvas into someone new. In both ways, Evelyn and Henry Higgins are the artists to their work. Though they might not treat the people they are working with as a human, in the grander idea they have made them better. Adam finally comes to terms with his true personality, while Evelyn exposes what society believes are the norms for a person’s appearance. While, with Eliza, she leaves the life of being a beggar and becoming a duchess, showing how through hard work a person can change, and it becomes hard to return to one’s prior self. Both instances show art playing a large role in shaping their lives. From learning about life through art, people then strive to be on the same level as the art the see, trying to live a grander lifestyle. Showing that to a certain extent art can influence life more than life can influence art.
4. In lines 85 to the end of the poem is where we can find the true meaning of the piece. After what seems to be a very bi-polar first part, the speaker finally settles with being one of a kind. She claims that “song has touched her lips with fire/ and made her heart a shrine;” and feels as if she has this special gift (poetry) that she hopes will be remembered forever.
"A picture can paint a thousand words." I found the one picture in my mind that does paint a thousand words and more. It was a couple of weeks ago when I saw this picture in the writing center; the writing center is part of State College. The beautiful colors caught my eye. I was so enchanted by the painting, I lost the group I was with. When I heard about the observation essay, where we have to write about a person or thing in the city that catches your eye. I knew right away that I wanted to write about the painting. I don’t know why, but I felt that the painting was describing the way I felt at that moment.
