That is certainly how the Christians (a growing religious group of those who follow the Man Jesus Christ) feel about those found in one of their newest writings, the book of Hebrews. This book of Hebrews contains many of the controversial teachings of the church of Christ. Many of the teachings have been seen as a direct assault against Judaism, and have caused serious tension and conflict between the two religious groups. However, one section of the book that has been called “The Hall of Fame of Faith” (or something similar) is likely to be found (mostly) agreeable to both groups. In Paul Tillich’s 1957 work Dynamics of Faith, he mentions that there are six major components of faith. These six components of faith describe the Franciscan perspective of “faith”. According to Tillich, the first component of faith is “the state of being ultimately concerned”. The second component of faith is that it is supposed to be at the center of all of our personal lives and everything that we do throughout our own individual lives. The third component of faith is that we should have an awareness for “infinite” things such as God himself. The fourth component of faith is that we need to understand that faith can act as fear, fascination, or both of these qualities at the same time. The fifth component of faith is that doubt is a major product that will always exist with faith. The last component of faith is that we need a community in order to have a “language of faith”.

Tillich defines faith. Dynamics of Faith opens with the most important quote of the entire book: “Faith is the state of being ultimately concerned” (1). Being faithful means being constantly fully concerned with a proper ultimate concern. Tillich defines an ultimate concern as something that “demands the total surrender of him who accepts this claim, and it promises total fulfillment even if all other claims have to be subjected to it or rejected in its name” (1-2). Tillich warns that not all ultimate concerns are equal and that one can only be fully faithful through the pursuit of a proper ultimate concern (i.e. the infinite). Tillich contrasts this with the common mistake many in society today make of using success (or something like it) as one’s ultimate concern. While success serves as an ideal ultimate concern in that it can easily command one fully, it is not a way to achieve faith because no one will ever find true fulfillment through the pursuit of success due to its finite nature (Tillich 3-4). Tillich highlights the point that faith must be a conscious act, a choice. This is because, while faith has an emotional component, “emotion does not produce faith” (Tillich 8). Another major component of Tillich’s faith definition is authentic faith’s direction towards the infinite. He expressed his beliefs of what made a Christian a Christian within his writing. One of his most famous writings, The Demonstration of the Apostolic Preaching, highlights the idea of the Holy Trinity and the Rule of Faith in the interpretation of the Bible. Irenaeus believed that the Rule of Faith was ultimately necessary and required when reading and interpreting the word of Christianity, saying, in the words of Isaiah, “If ye believe not, neither shall ye understand” (paragraph 3). In the eyes of Irenaeus, the Rule of Faith is one of the main things that makes a Christian a Christian. The first part of the rule of faith reminds Christians of “God, the Father, not made, not material, invisible; one God, the creator of all things” (paragraph 5).

The book of Hebrews is a unique portion of the Bible because it is written as though it were a letter, directed at people the writer may have known. However, the book targets a seemingly broad audience of those without faith and also those that could be described as believers that have experienced persecution. A salient message within Hebrews is that people must persevere when they feel persecuted because Jesus Christ is their salvation, regardless of anything else that is happening in the people’s lives. An emphasis on the greatness of Jesus and his role as a mediator between God and those on Earth is dominant throughout the chapters and verses.
The role of faith has been debated among many theologians, scientists, and philosophers. It has been greatly discussed and depicted throughout history as whether faith is logical when it comes to religion or whether faith is completely absurd. In this essay, I will focus on the role of faith through the lenses of Christian philosophers Sorean Kierkegaard and Paul Tillich. It can also be implied that the combination of faith and reason allows one to seek information and knowledge about truth and God; based on various class discussions and past academic teachings, it is understood that both faith and reason are the instruments that diverse parties are supposed to use on this search for truth and God. There are many stances and viewpoints on the issues of faith and reason. Some believe that both of these ideas cannot and should not be combined; these parties deem that faith and reason must be taken as merely separate entities. However, this writer does not understand why both entities cannot be combined; both terms are so closely compatible that it would make sense to combine the two for a common task. Based on various class discussions and readings, there are many philosophers and theologians who have certain opinions regarding faith, reason and their compatibility; these philosophers include Hildegard of Bingen, Ibn Rushd, Moses Maimonides, and St. Thomas Aquinas. The following essay will examine each of the previously stated philosopher’s viewpoints on faith and reason, and will essentially try to determine whether or not faith and reason are ultimately one in the same.
Most Christians do not think about the canon of scripture or know what it is or means in theology. Most take for granted the Bible they have and never question how it came into being. Today, we have 39 books of the Old Testament and 27 books of the New Testament. There was a time, however, that we did not have a canon. Bruce defines canon as books of the Bible that were recognized to be considered scripture (p. 17). The importance of the canon and how it was developed was intriguing to professor and author F.F. Bruce. He dedicated his book The Canon of Scripture to explore and explain the formulation of the canon we have today. Bruce taught in universities, including the University of Manchester, where he began to lecture students on the entire canon of scripture. Bruce wrote many books and commentaries and was general editor to The New International Commentary on the New Testament. He spent a vast amount of his time researching the formation of the canon with emphasis on the New Testament. The contents of this review will highlight how F.F. Bruce offers his interpretative definition, review, and criticisms of the full canon of Scripture.
Within the Bible it reveals the essentials and key concepts of the Christian faith. There are a few essential principles that most Christians believe, which are as follows; the deity of Christ, belief in the resurrection and the power it gives us over death and sin and, salvation by God’s grace and not by works but salvation is through Jesus.
