We have all wanted to get revenge on someone. Revenge is a very common feeling. It originates with hate or jealousy. Revenge can make our lives miserable and make us do things that hurt other people. We shouldn’t try to get revenge on anyone. If someone did something bad to us, we should think more deeply about that situation before taking any action that could cause some legal problems. Some people can get the point of killing just to get their revenge and some people leave this decision due to some circumstances, just like in the story we just read, “He Becomes Deeply and Famously Drunk” by Brady Udall. This story deals with the concept of revenge. Archie, is a handsome, loud and blunt seventeen-year-old who has spent much of his recent life …show more content…
If you want to get revenge on anybody then you have to look at legal terms too. Most people don’t look at it and ruins their life behind bars. We have to think then act. If we look at Archie, we can see Archie had held pain inside of him from an early age so when he discovered that his victim is nothing more than a helpless old man then he refused to kill him. He has saved his life by making this significant decision. Otherwise, he could get into some legal trouble and spend his whole life in the jail. Some authors wrote an article online about how much punishment is enough for the murderer. They also used a real life example of a teenager who is same as Archie’s age. His name is Askari and charged with murder at the age of 16. In describing their research, they said, “He never saw high school graduation. Sentenced to 20 years to life for felony murder, he was released at the age of 39 after serving 23 years in prison” (Marquez-Lewis, et al). In other words, Askari didn’t get to finish his high school and wasted his 20 important years of life in prison. I think Askari wrecked his 20 important years of life in prison by committing murder. Which he supposes to enjoy and have fun. He will never get back these 20 years and have to start again to succeed in his remaining life. This anecdote also applies to Archie. For example, if Archie did not think and made the right decision at the right place then he …show more content…
As we already know that Archie just want to get revenge of his father’s death. Which is divergent. He should think about his mom too if he wants to get revenge. As I mentioned in previous paragraph that he was drinking, very destructive and didn’t attend school. His mom is not raising him right because of her own problems which is depression. She is dependent on pills to control her health because she can’t get over her husband 's death. One of my researched article stated, “Research on the effects of an infant 's/child 's death on parents ' mental health and personal growth has found symptoms of PTSD, depression, and anxiety; lower quality of life; and minimal involvement in social activities up to 6 years after the loss” (Hawthorne, et al.). In other words, It is very difficult for parents to handle their health when they lost their child. Which could lead to many health related problems. Such as PTSD, depression and anxiety. I also believe it is hard to manage if you lost your close relatives or friends. It does not matter if you lost your child or husband but the symptoms will be the same. Archie’s mother needs more time and need more care than Archie needs but Archie is not that old who can understand what his mom is going through and what he needs to do to make things better. For example, Archie said, “A number of times she’s called me, trying to get me to come home, even though she herself is the one
Revenge should not belong in the criminal justice system. There was a case of an elderly
I can still remember the day, June 2, 2013, my cousin took his own life due to alcohol. This is not the first time alcoholism has taken a family member from my family. I lost my uncle ten years ago to the same things, but running his truck into a tree. Like Scott Russell Sanders’ my family has suffered from the pain and disease that alcohol causes. Although Sanders’ case was much different than mine, my families is more unknown until all of a sudden one of my family members is gone. In Sanders’ essay, “Under the Influence: Paying the Price of my Father’s Booze,” he discusses how it was growing up around him, his father’s life being taken, and his life now.
Revenge is the opportunity to retaliate or gain satisfaction for a real or perceived slight ("revenge"). In “The Cask of Amontillado” by Edgar Allan Poe, Montresor, the narrator, is out for revenge. Montressor seeks revenge against Fortunato and thinks he has developed the perfect plan for “revenge with impunity” (Baym). Montresor never tells the reader why he feels Fortunato deserves punishment. He only says that Fortunato causes him “a thousand injuries”until “[venturing] upon insult” (Baym?).
Throughout the years, and throughout various forms of media, some of the greatest creative minds have been the victims of the most unfortunate circumstances. For many, their major problem is that of addiction, and one could say that it affects their work, for better or worse. For example, a writer’s prose usually is affected at least partly by the author’s inner dialogue, and thus, the author’s problems get mixed in with their writings. Therefore, the author’s addictions become a part of the work itself.
Evil exists naturally in the world, and there are many acts that are considered evil. As a result, evil is often a theme in literature. “The Tragedy of Hamlet, Prince of Denmark” by William Shakespeare, and “The Cask of Amontillado” by Edgar Allan Poe each rely heavily on evil to portray a message. Out of all of the evil acts that exist, exacting revenge is the evilest act that a person can make, for a person’s rash decision to exact revenge will ruin their sense of morality. The characters of Hamlet and Laertes in “Hamlet” each commit terrible acts of revenge, as does Montresor in “The Cask of Amontillado.”

Many people percieve revenge to be something that falls under justice, as they are driven by emotions, while others consider getting the police involved as serving justice. Moreover, some people find revenge to be pleasing and satisfying, but to argue the point that just because something is more satisfying does not mean it is
In The Glass Castle by Jeanette Walls, Rex Walls is highly dependent on alcohol, which significantly hurts Jeanette and her siblings and drives the family apart. The Walls children and countless others like them across the United States have become victims of alcoholism, which is a factor that they cannot control, but debilitates them socially, physically, financially, and emotionally. Drinking: A Love Story (1996) is a memoir by Caroline Knapp where she shares her experience of gradually becoming an alcoholic. She found drinking to be the most important relationship in her life; she loved how it made her feel, how it coped with her fears and worries. She chronicles some of the effort and self-realization required for recovery from this addiction, but her primary focus is on the charm, seductiveness, and destructiveness that she was able to find in two decades as an alcoholic, hopelessly in love with liquor. Her relationship with alcohol started in early teenage years and progressed through young adulthood, until she finally checked herself into a rehabilitation center at the age of thirty-four.
“The Swimmer” by John Cheever is a short story about Neddy Merrill and his journey through alcoholism. Alcoholism plays a detrimental role in Neddy Merrill’s life because it has been ruined due to his dependence on this awful substance. The author symbolically presents the stages of alcoholism, its effects on the alcoholic, as well as how the alcoholic’s family and friends change towards Neddy.
After being imprisoned, Edmond Dante’s creates a plan to get back or seek revenge on those that put him in jail. Dante’s had a right to seek revenge on the wrongdoers because he was wronged in the first place. He did succeed in taking his revenge. Edmond wanted revenge on Fernand because if Fernand had not been jealous of Dante and Mercedes, he would have not lied and gotten Dante sent to jail. Because Dante’s was imprisoned, he was unable to marry Mercedes and his life was changed forever. A “brain study shows why revenge is sweet” article explains why those who take revenge may not be at fault as much as others may think. The study shows why behavior known as altruistic punishment where people
Revenge is such an enormous part of a being human. It is something that no matter how much you try to avoid part of you will persistently lust for it. When you are hurt in any way your natural instinct will always tell you to make the one who hurt you feel just as bad if not worse as how you felt. It is such a natural and powerful feeling, that when revenge is incorporated into a story it makes it so much stronger. Revenge will make you see so many more sides of characters and make them seem much more complex. Revenge can give fictional characters a more human quality. That is why so many writers use it as their theme.
Can a story driven by revenge, with no apologies have a pleasant ending? Revenge is when someone does something that affects another person, so the affected person retaliates in an attempt to get back at them, it sounds quite negative. Though in the right situation it reveals any hidden thoughts or feelings, regarding the situation. In a story named My Oedipus Complex is about a child named Larry who lived peacefully with his mother, but then his father comes home, cutting off Larry’s connection to his mother. Throughout the story Larry made constant attempts at revenge for his father stealing his mother’s affection from him. In the movie ‘Dan in Real Life’ a single father drives to his parents house with his three daughters,
What lengths will someone go to in order to get revenge on someone that did them wrong? It becomes clear, in Erebos, that, in this particular case, people would go to extreme lengths to get revenge on someone who did something unpleasant to them. Larry McVay, Adrian's father, was extremely angry at Ortolan, who had done wrong to McVay. He was accused of copying and other charges alike this. So, Erebos was created. Erebos was just a means of getting revenge, and since Mcvay was blinded by his urge to get revenge, he was willing to manipulate and trick people, namely kids, and get them to do horrible things. Larry was willing to let kids kill people, get in lots of trouble, and do things that they would never to do if they weren't under Mcvay's
Revenge almost always has the makings of an intriguing and tragic story. William Shakespeare’s Hamlet is a perfect example of how revenge unfolds and what it unveils. The play tells the story of Hamlet, the prince of Denmark. Claudius, Hamlet’s uncle, marries his mother soon after his father’s death. Hamlet greatly disapproves of the hasty marriage and suspects foul play. His suspicions are confirmed when the ghost of his father appears and tells him that Claudius murdered him. Hamlet’s father asks him to take revenge upon Claudius, and soon everything takes a drastic change. The courses of revenge throughout Hamlet surround each character with corruption, obsession, and fatality.
