The Fall of Big Brother There are many ways that the society of “Big Brother” from George Orwell’s “1984”, will cease to exist. As stated in the “Principles and Practices of Oligarchy Collectivism” by Emmanuel Goldstein, he writes that there are four ways in which the ruling party can fall from power; knowing that all are a factor, and none can stand alone. Leading to my belief that the ruling class will fall primarily because they govern so inefficiently that the masses are stirred to revolt. Using the allusions throughout the book, historical revolutions, human heritage. and I believe the turning point of Big Brother’s regime, are in the hands of the people. “Let the ruling classes tremble at a communist revolution. The proletarians have nothing to lose but their chains. they have a world to win. Workingmen of all countries, unite!” this quote from Karl Marx isn't just a nod to an upheaving revolution, but also one of many insights that Orwell portrays in “1984”. Early in the novel Winston thinks to himself “a lonely ghost uttering a truth that nobody would ever hear...it was not by making yourself heard but by staying sane that you carried on the human heritage.”(27). Winston also notes that he is “already dead”, to even see himself as “dead”means that he is still in control and is aware of the Party’s influence. This is one of the major factors that would inevitably make a group of individuals revolt against the society. When Winston meets Julia she eventually reveals that she is impure, committing countless crimes, to as far as making an inner party commit suicide. Seeing that there are rebels such as Winston and Julia makes one wonder if they are more of them out there-- all revolting for the same cause, all carrying the human heritage, all already “dead”.The idea to even think of resisting to the party must be imagined
