At first glance, the story Alice in Wonderland by Lewis Carroll seems to differ from the findings that Thomas C. Foster has written about in his novel How to Read Literature Like a Professor. However, when taking a closer look at the text, Foster’s findings become more evident. Foster explains that every meal between characters in a novel is like a communion. He also believes that eating is the most intimate thing characters can do with each other. In Alice in Wonderland, the mad tea party scene seems to be full of riddles and nonsense, making the act of eating seem unimportant. He states, “The act of taking food into our bodies is so personal that we really only want to do it with people we’re very comfortable with” (9). Therefore, you don't invite just anyone to a meal with you, they have to have some significance in your life. Alice being invited to the mad tea party not only shows the bond she’s created with the people of Wonderland, but also the openness of the characters. During the tea party the use of riddles shows the familiarity everyone has with each other which is essential to a communion of any kind. The riddles and nonsense of the Mad Hatter contribute to Alice’s social and mental development throughout the novel. For example, when Alice notices the Mad Hatters watch is two days off and doesn't actually have the time on it, “‘What a funny watch!’ she remarked. ‘It tells the day of the month, and doesn’t tell what o’clock it is!’” (Lewis 99-100). At first, Alice didn’t understand why the Mad Hatter’s concept of time was different from hers and believed his view of time didn’t make much sense. However, this turns into a powerful lesson for Alice. This suggests to Alice that time can be subjective; it can appear differently to different people. What Alice considered to be the most universal thing in the world, time, is not necessarily universal. At first glance, when reading or watching Alice in Wonderland, the tone is light and playful with the author’s intent to entertain, however there is no doubt that the story also succeeds as a vivid demonstration of human psychopathology. In the movie, the tone can also come off as light and playful, but if you pay close attention the movie adds a darker tone to the story. The movie, both the original and the Tim Burton version, vividly demonstrate multiple mental disorders. The main character of Alice is an excellent example of this, as the movie brings out her disorder of paranoid schizophrenia and a little bit of nightmare disorder.
Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland is a story about a little girl who comes into contact with unpredictable, illogical, basically mad world of Wonderland by following the White Rabbit into a huge rabbit – hole. Everything she experiences there challenges her perception and questions common sense. This extraordinary world is inhabited with peculiar, mystical and anthropomorphic creatures that constantly assault Alice which makes her to question her fundamental beliefs and suffer an identity crisis. Nevertheless, as she woke up from “such a curious dream” she could not help but think “as well she might, what a wonderful dream it had been ”.

In Alice’s Adventure in Wonderland, the animal characters are very weird. They were supposed to guide Alice through the traditional fairytale world she has created, but instead they were negative influences on this child. I believe the audience expected that animal characters are supposed to because they are the ones who should be a role model for kids to look up or when they read it. Do the animal characters in Lew Carroll’s Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland disobey the animal characters in traditional fairytales? Haliburton. It is related to my thesis because the animal characters in Alice’s Adventure in Wonderland felt that they had authority to disobey the animal characters in other traditional fairytales. This is similar to Del Toro’s Pan Labyrinth because there are main animal characters like fairytales, faun, and paleman. They have the weird physical features. It was really gross to see them. This applied to Lewis Carroll’s book because he used the animals in a weird way. For example, The Cheshire-Cat’s body disappeared but the face was still there. Other example is a mouse walking by Alice. In real life, mouse rarely does that.
One of the main purposes for writing Alice in Wonderland was not only to show the difficulties of communication between children and adults. In this story, almost every adult Alice talked to did not understand her. At times she messed up what they were saying completely as well, which many times stick true to real life circumstances. This book shows that kids and adults are on completely separate pages on an everlasting story. Carroll points out that sometimes children, like Alice, have a hard time dealing with the transition from childhood to adulthood, 'growing up.' Alice in Wonderland is just a complicated way of showing this fact. Lewis Carroll's ways with words is confusing, entertaining, serious, and highly unique all at the same time. The Queen in both is a representation of masculine evil and the story clearly defines the struggle to ‘win the good fight’. Lewis Carroll’s Alice in Wonderland follows the story of young Alice trapped in the world of Wonderland after falling down through a rabbit-hole. The rabbit-hole which is filled with bookshelves, maps, and other objects foreshadows the set of rules, the ones Alice is normally accustomed to, will be defied in Wonderland. This conflict between her world and Wonderland becomes evident shortly after her arrival as evinced by chaos in “Pool of Tears” and Alice brings up the main theme of the book “was I the same when I got up this morning? I almost think I can remember feeling a little different. But if I am not the same, the next question is who am I?” (Carroll 18). After Alice fails to resolve her identity crisis using her friends, Alice says “Who am I, then? Tell me that first, and then, if I like being that person, I’ll come up: if not, I’ll stay down here til I’m somebody else” (Carroll 19). Hence in the beginning, Alice is showing her dependency on others to define her identity. Nevertheless when her name is called as a witness in chapter 12, Alice replies “HERE!” without any signs of hesitation (Carroll 103). Close examination of the plot in Alice in Wonderland reveals that experiential learning involving sizes leads Alice to think logically and rationally. Alice then attempts to explore Wonderland analytically and becomes more independent as the outcome. With these qualities, Alice resolves her identity crisis by recognizing Wonderland is nothing but a dream created by her mind.
Most of the characters in Alice’s dreams are considered adults in that they assume a role of authority over her. Characters such as the Mad Hatter assume said role through their superiority in age. We know of them to be older physically but not are not mature enough to have authority. However, for the characters whose age we cannot assume, we recognize their sense of authority as their being adults. This meaning that their age is not necessarily defined and so we assume them to be adults through the way they carry themselves. Nevertheless, these characters are all considered adults, so Carroll depicts them as closed minded and unintellectual, the reasoning behind their condescending tone to
Alice’s quest in Wonderland is not well though-out, in fact her encounters are disordered. Having her encounters be unpredictable places Lewis Carroll fairy-tale under Gothic horror. Without a doubt, Alice’s experiences can be illustrated as a nightmare. More importantly, the usage of satire and symbolism by Lewis Carroll gives Alice in Wonderland a meaningful note. All the different characters used in Wonderland essentially come together to form a secret lesson, this secret lesson being teaching children the turmoil of having to grow up. Lewis Carroll utilizes the rabbit hole, growing and shrinking, identifying oneself to characters, and Alice herself as symbols. Like in the “real world,” the only known laws in Wonderland are of chaos.
One of the two themes of Alice Through the Looking Glass is to never stop believing and to always try your hardest, even if you get defeated. Another lesson for Alice Through the Looking Glass is that you shouldn’t dwell on the past even if it makes you furious. The Queen of Hearts dwelled on the fact that her sister, the White Queen, lied one night as a kid and got her in trouble. In order to demonstrate this, Carroll introduces a chain of events, which involve problems that children must deal with whenever they encounter new milestone in their development. As the confusing tale of Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland develops, each time her body experiences a change, Alice is forced to confront an individual aspect of herself through a conflict that arises from her encounter with another character. Prior to each encounter, Alice’s body had been altered with the ingestion of some normal teatime snack. Alice in Wonderland belongs to the nonsense genre, and even if most of what happens to Alice is quite illogical, the main character is not. “The Alice books are, above all, about growing up” (Kincaid, page 93); indeed, Alice starts her journey as a scared little girl, however, at the end of what we discover to be just a dream, she has entered the adolescence phase with a new way to approach the mentally exhausting and queer Wonderland. It is important to consider the whole story when analyzing the growth of the character, because the meaning of an event or a sentence is more likely to mean what it truly looks like rather than an explanation regarding subconscious and Freudian interpretations. Morton states “that the books should possess any unity of purpose seems on the surface unlikely” (Morton, page 509), but it’s better to consider the disconnected narrative and the main character separately, since the girl doesn’t belong to Wonderland, which is, as Morton says, with no intrinsic unity. Whereas, there are a few key turning points where it is possible to see how Alice is changing, something that is visible throughout her journey. Carroll wants to tell the story of a girl who has to become braver in order to contend with challenges like the pool made by her own tears, or assertive characters, like the Queen.
