We are living in a colorful world. There are many different people live with different cultures. But, what makes so many differences in our world? According to the story of In the Jungle and my personal experiences, our lives are affected by living condition, natural resources and social environment around us.
In the story of In the Jungle, Author Annie Dillard goes to the Napo River, which is the heart of the Ecuadorian Jungle and it is also the most unspoiled place. She describes the natural living style of the people who live there. As she tells us is the story that “The cold woke them; they warmed their skins in the river, which was always ninety degrees; then they returned to their hammocks and slept through the rest of the night.” The people who live in there are very primordially and naturally. They are live with a different lifestyle with the people who live in the cities. They will go to the river to keep their body warm when they are feeling cold at night. However, what would the people who live in cities do when they are feeling cold at night? Maybe they will turn on the heater or just cover themselves by quilts. Not only the way of heating, living condition also made different modes of life. The people who live in the cities live in apartments and work at offices and factories. But the people who live in countryside mostly work at farms and live leisurely. That causes the different cultures between the cities and countryside.
Natural resource is also the main factor that causes our different habits of living. In the story, Annie describes those people who live in Ecuadorian Jungle are “extraordinarily clean people” because they bathe twice a day in the river. That because they live beside the Napo River, the water...

... funeral procession for amusement. Mencius’ mother saw that and said “This is not the right place for my son.” Then, they moved to live close to a marketplace. Smart Mencius began to imitate merchants. His mother knows that and said “This is not the right place for my son, either.” Then, they moved again and they decided to live in a place that next to school this time. Mencius naturally begins to imitate he behavior of those students. His mother was happy and said that “This is the right place for my son.” Finally, Mencius became an erudite person when he grown up. The right social environment makes Mencius become a great person.
Everyone live in a different surroundings and everyone has different life. Even though we are living with different living condition, natural resource and social environment, those differences make our colorful world and wonderful life.
In Athens, there were two wise men named Socrates and Pericles. In the short story "Plato's Apology", Socrates is on trial, and is speaking before his peers so that he may be judged. In "Pericles's Funeral Oration", Pericles himself is giving a speech at a funeral on behalf of the fallen soldiers of Athens. In both speeches, Socrates and Pericles believe it will be hard to talk about the subject because the people listening might not believe what they say to be the truth or the whole truth. Both men were considered wise, but Socrates believed men were not virtuos, and Pericles believed that man does strive to become virtous.
Sometimes they didn 't get the pure water to drink and so they will rely on the unpurified and ditched water. They would use just a cup of water to wash themselves, and instead of the toothpaste, they would use baking soda mixed with hydrogen peroxide to clean their teeth. Since they mostly went barefoot, their soles were also tough and thick. She would say, “We were sort of like the cactus. We ate irregularly, and when we did, we 'd gorge ourselves “(Walls, 12). Since they were living interest at that time, she compares their eating condition like cactus, i.e. eating a lot when available. For instance, when a train filled with cantaloupes jumped the track, all they had for breakfast, lunch and dinner was “fresh cantaloupe, stewed cantaloupe, even fried cantaloupe “(Walls, 12). This is how they used to live their life with no future plans or safety. There was no stability in their life in terms of food, living, and
Socrates was wise men, who question everything, he was found to be the wise man in Athens by the oracle. Although he was consider of being the wises man alive in those days, Socrates never consider himself wise, therefore he question everything in order to learned more. Socrates lived a poor life, he used to go to the markets and preach in Athens he never harm anyone, or disobey any of the laws in Athens, yet he was found guilty of all charges and sentence to die.
In An American Childhood by Annie Dillard, Dillard reminisces on her many adventures throughout her childhood living in Pittsburgh. Her stories explain her school, her home life, her family, and growing up. Dillard also talks about changes in her life, and how they affect her, and how she felt about others around her. One’s childhood is a crucial part of life, because it’s a time of learning more than any other time of life. Childhood is a time of curiosity and realization. What you learn in your childhood has a big impact on how you make decisions and act as an adult.
Throughout this essay Annie Dillard uses many similes to give readers a more precise mental image of what the airplane looked like as it was flying through sky. In the essay Dillard describes, “The plane looped the loop, seeming to arch its back like a gymnast.” In this simile, Dillard compare the airplane to a gymnast. This affects the essay because readers think of a gymnast, spinning and moving in ways human should not be able to move, just as the plane was spinning in a way planes do not normally move. Dillard also explains, “The other pilots could do these stunts too... But Rahm used the plane inexhaustibly, like a brush marking thin air.” In this quote, Dillard is explain how other pilots can fly too, but Rahm makes flying an art. This
The “red earth, black earth, yellow earth, [and] white earth” describe different races that are present in the world (l. 12). However, this imagery is not confined to signify races, but can also refer to different genders, religions, nationalities, and so on. The juxtaposition of the various colors emphasizes how different people can be from each other. However, the repetition of the word “earth” emphasizes how the earth is a common factor among all people and unites the human race together. All kinds of people are present in the world and each characteristic that defines humans adds to their identities, yet there is always something that connects everyone together. For example, one’s heritage is a significant factor in determining an identity. Each person is “evidence of her [their mother’s] life, and her mother’s” and so on (l. 8-9). Heritage highlights traits that have been passed down from generation to generation, further accentuating the importance of remembering one’s past – or ancestors – in order to help justify characteristics of their
...t be as prevalent in the United States as in other developing counties such as Bolivia, Lesotho, China and India. The film expert explains “water is a transient element, recycles itself around the globe through natural redistribution system of precipitation, accumulation and evaporation”. Even if we are half way around the world pollution and water affects us. The film relates to human growth and development in a sense that water is essential to us so therefore we cannot live without it. It provides us with energy and most important function is to help remove toxins from the body. The film was very informative it helps to gain a new perspective as to what is happening in other counties with their day to day challenges. A very sad story was being told about what these people are going through in Iran Salinas’ words “Many have live without love but not without water”
Our ancestors used to live a happier life. They were not drowned in technology like we are. They lived life as they should to, closer to their instinct. In the past, people had a healthy lifestyle, had more time to spend with their family and friends and were closer to nature. Whereas nowadays, people’s lifestyle has become unhealthy due to modern life. For example, we do not have much physical activity anymore. Besides, as modern humans are busy, we do not spend enough quality time with our family and friends which makes us happy. Moreover, we do not respect the nature which used to be our home. We live too fast without taking a rest for a while and enjoying our life. But as Dillard suggests, we need to be more observant. By taking a look at weasels, we can remember the real meaning of life which is living in the moment, being happy, and noticing
Socrates life was similar to his philosophies in more ways than one. He was loved, and unloved by the society. He was wise and depicted as such in the statue which represents him, though he would argue himself as unwise. His thoughts and actions have been preserved by the writings of his students, and his ideas have been preserved by actions from the world beyond his time. It is clear why a statue of this man was created; his questions changed the world.
“They use everything about the hog except the squeal.”- The Jungle. This is a very thought provoking quote. It shows that people had to use everything they could get from an animal because that was all they had, that’s all they could get. On the other hand, there is this, “I hope she'll be a fool -- that's the best thing a girl can be in this world, a beautiful little fool.” –The Great Gatsby. This is one of my favorite quotes in The Great Gatsby. It shows that they didn’t want the women to know of any troubles, the wanted them to blissfully ignorant in the 20’s. In the twenties there were people in one extreme or the other there wasn’t a lot of in between.
Life experiences allow individual to grasp the meaning of culture, people in our surrounding, and value the ethnic diversity into our society. Culture consists of the knowledge people use to live
Your environment shapes your experiences. Personally, living in a region where the climate has mild summers and harsh winters one can physically see the differences. Someone who may live in another region with a hot and dry climate experiences life in different ways than others do who have learned to adapt to living in a different environment.
According to Socrates, the timocratic man comes to be out of a society, having competing interests of the focus on virtue versus the accumulation of wealth. It is a compromise between these two competing interests and is the corresponding type of man is formed is by his parents and other adults (namely servants) that he comes into contact with. The father may be all about the pursuit of glory and the honor and prestige that come with being a warrior. Therefore, the father would appeal to the young man’s rational side. On the other hand, his mother would appeal to his greed and encourage him to pursue material possessions (549d). As a result, the young man grows and accepts a happy medium of his influences and becomes an victory-loving and spirited man that has a now larger lust for mon...
Over the course of our lives, there are times where we are at a high point, where our lives are full of happiness and there is nothing for us to worry about. However, we often come to sit back and realize that our lives might not be exactly how we imagine it. There are problems and obstacles that we must choose to overcome. With the rate society is evolving at, we miss out on the little things like friends and family that makes our lives that much more special. Life can be filled with bliss no matter how bad things may seem and we can find true happiness from fixing these problems to make our lives blissful.
We might not have the same opinions, paths, and ways of living; but we all, millions of people around the world, share the same purpose of life: Being able to say “I am having a good life!” What we mean by “good life” is living in pure happiness and having a wonderful peace of mind. The difference between us is that each one of us chooses a different way in his pursuit of happiness. Some find it in stability with a big house, a family, and a good paying job. Some find it in adventure and wildness, travel, and taking risks. While others don’t really have specific criteria or an organized plan, they just believe that happiness comes with living each day as if it was the last, with no worries about the rest. Personally, I find it in trying to be the best version of myself, in staying true to my principles, and in the same time in being able to make my own decisions; which reminds me of what George Loewenstein said “Just because we figure out that X makes people happy and they're choosing Y, we don't want to impose X on them.”
