Despite what others might think, the most effective way to portray an unreliable narrator is by presenting a narrator whose sanity is in question. By doing so, the author can create a narrative that challenges readers' assumptions and invites them to question the truth. The first reason that this is the most effective method to portray an unreliable narrator is that the narrator who is insane will have twisted perceptions of reality. However, some people might argue that the most effective way is when the narrator has a limited perspective. In the story “Borders” by Thomas King, when the family is being interviewed and questioned by reporters, the young narrator described how; “They mostly talked to my mother. The story “The Tell-Tale Heart” by Edgar Allan Poe shows this when the narrator, who was a neighbor to an old man with a creepy eye, made the decision to try and take the life of the old man. “Whenever it fell upon me, my blood ran cold; and so by degrees, very gradually I made up my mind to take the life of the old man, and thus rid myself of the eye forever” (Poe). This example shows how the narrator has twisted perceptions as the narrator's irrational fear of the old man's eye serves as an example of his unstable mindset. He decides to kill the old man because of this fear, which shows his distorted perception and judgment, effectively portraying the narrator's unreliability.
