As a child, I was always intrigued by the workings of complex mechanisms and equipment. I liked tinkering with objects, trying to analyze and understand their principle rather than playing with toys. In school, I found myself drawn towards subjects that require a lot of creative and logical thinking. In order to have a better view of these concepts I designed many projects and took part in many science fairs. The exposure to such propositions enhanced my understanding of the use of simple and complex designs. This interest has only grown through my years in school. Therefore, I proceeded to take up Mechanical Engineering as my major because it seemed to encompass all the facets of my interest. Indeed, the course structure offered by the Mechanical Engineering department is quite outstanding and my perspective and understanding has tremendously expanded.
During my undergraduate studies, I was exposed to several interesting yet challenging issues of Mechanical Engineering. The varied mechanical engineering courses have implanted a lot of enthusiasm in me. I have been introduced to several topics ranging from Fluid Dynamics, Manufacturing Technology, and Metrology to Computer-Aided Design and Manufacturing. Out of my strong conviction that knowledge of computers is a prerequisite in today’s research, I’ve gained a special predilection towards Computer-Aided Design. This opened up a realm of possibilities in the field of Finite Element Analysis that I never imagined in my life. These courses have helped me build a strong foundation in mechanical engineering and laid the necessary groundwork to pursue graduate studies. Right from the second year, I was preparing myself by working towards gaining knowledge in depth rather than only fo...

First, it was the sheer amount of educational opportunities available to me. With over 200 majors and certificates available and the option to design my own course of study, this school stood out to me as someplace with enough resources to provide the freedom to explore my interests. Additionally, the Honors Program certainly appeals to me as well. Along with the excellent academic advising and smaller, faculty-led classes and discussions, the Honors Program would provide me with a network of like-minded individuals, more opportunities to grow intellectually and as a leader, and to sustain my curiosity as a student. Outside of the classroom, I plan to take advantage of many opportunities at this school to apply what I learn in school to the real world and to help others.
Possessing the basic knowledge in the field of physical sciences and the intuition in them made me to pick up Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry as my majors for the Higher Secondary Education. After the completion of my secondary education, I felt that engineering was the only field which can transform and transfer my dreams in the field of sciences into a real one and also it would give me an opportunity to learn and explore how the fundamentals of science are appl...
Ever since I was a child, I have had a great interest for the automotive industry. From car trivia to novel innovations, my innate passion for the automotive industry has always made me research the minutest detail of every vehicle that interested me. Since elementary school I would draw sketches of cars which incorporated technology which were unheard of at that time; novel devices such as electrochromic windshields, HUD displays, and wind turbines which would constantly re-generate electricity for the car. While growing up, my hobbies largely consisted of constructing countless Lego and Meccano sets, and repairing my mom’s 19 year-old car. In middle school, math and science were my favorite subjects: applying science and mathematics to solve real-world problems has fascinated me and I have also taken further steps to reach my goals. By the age of thirteen I devised a scaled model of a heliostat power plant, which successfully powered a light bulb. The mathematics beyond the focus points of parabolic dishes and thermodynamics was very advanced for my age, but I took up the challenge...
I have spent so much time learning about design through the paradigm of materials but now I want to connect mechanical aspects to the knowledge I have already gained. I am particularly interested in the research done by Dr. Drew Nelson, Dr. Sheri Sheppard and Dr. Friedrich Prinz whose work most closely fits my interests. I am interested in doing research in mechanical design as influenced by material usage. I am also looking forward to taking courses such as Imperfections in Crystalline Solids, The Magic of Materials and Manufacturing, and Nanomaterials Synthesis and Applications for Mechanical Engineers to explore topics I have already studied, but from a mechanical engineering perspective. Stanford’s combination of rigor and creativity appeal to me. I have always enjoyed a challenge and get great satisfaction from expanding my knowledge. Coming from a Materials Science and Engineering background where I have performed well, both in academics and leadership, I know I can be an asset to and learn from the world-class Mechanical Engineering program at

People travel miles in search of their true passion; some find them early in their life and I consider myself lucky enough to be one among them. I found my true calling at the age of 12 on a field trip to a milk factory. It seemed like the Disneyland of science with huge machineries, conveyer belts running all around, and instruments working about in their own rhythm with sheer intricacies and perfection. As a kid, I was eager to understand the mechanics behind this magical rhythm. The desire of gaining in-depth knowledge about Control System and Automation eventually led me to choose Electronics and Instrumentation Engineering as my undergraduate study.

Engineers like challenges and I am one of them and I have a lot to learn, I am aware of the standards expected out of students at the University of Ottawa, knowing that I have been dedicated towards my ventures in the past; I believe I have the aptitude, resilience and resolution to meet the same. Thanks for your consideration I look forward for your positive reply.
The developed world rarely pauses to think of the prevalent necessity of energy in our lives. As the global population nears 9 billion people in 2040 (1), we are not only challenged to provide for basic needs, but to also improve living standards worldwide. These challenges require a global energy increase of approximately 35% (1). The challenge may seem intimidating, but the human race has demonstrated an exceptional ability to overcome difficulties and progress. An important aspect to improve worldwide living standards involves the environment. The most important needs in many areas of the world are cleaner air and access to cleaner water. Nations need to continue to address risks associated with rising greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. Protecting the environment and preventing these increases pose technological challenges for us today as well as the generations of the future. To overcome these challenges it is going to be necessary for many engineers of many disciplines to be involved. However the most significant problem we face is to produce this energy in a sustainable manner. Achieving this sustainability is a matter of using processes that are less wasteful, developing technologies that are more efficient, and finding cleaner energy sources. My motivation for pursuing the MSc in Mechanical Engineering with a track of Sustainable Energy and Process Technology (SPET) is that I believe that this program will give me the skills, education, networks, and contact with industry necessary to be able to make a difference in the world’s constant search for increasingly sustainable energy sources. Additionally I have always found the concepts of process optimization to reduce generation of waste and contaminants, fluid mechanics, ther...
My biggest reason for being a mechanical engineer is not because of the pay or the benefits, but because it is what I want to do. I feel like I can be happy going to work everyday as a mechanical engineer. I have always wanted to wake up everyday and be a happy person. Mechanical engineering will provide me with a challenge and a spark of joy at the same time. Mechanical engineering is my dream career. One day I will accomplish my goals. Through hard work and dedication I will accomplish the goals I have set out to achieve in life.
Mechanical engineering is a type of engineering which applies principles of physics and material science for the purpose of analyzing, designing, manufacturing and maintaining of mechanical systems (Gorp, 2005). It is involved with the production and usage of mechanical power in the operation of various machines and tools. Mechanical engineering is considered to be the most diverse engineering and has its breadth derived from the need to design tools and manufacture products which range from small individual parts to large systems. Mechanical engineering, as thought of by scholars, is related to Aerospace engineering, Manufacturing and Mechanical engineering (Van et al, 2011).
But I did have an interest in materials. However, mechanical engineering is a very broad field. Mechanical engineering has an area of specialization referred to as “Materials and Manufacturing” [4] It doesn’t focus so heavily on material development and design so much as material selection and the methods of manufacturing parts using those materials. For example, “How do you mass produce carbon fiber parts?” would be a problem that a mechanical engineer of this specialization might set out to solve. At this point I had also had some exposure to electrical engineering, through a Snap Electronics kit and obtaining my Amateur Radio License. Mechanical engineers do take some electrical engineering classes. This gives mechanical engineers an understanding of electrical control systems and electric motors [5], both of which play important roles in machinery
