Ever since I was a child, I have had a great interest for the automotive industry. From car trivia to novel innovations, my innate passion for the automotive industry has always made me research the minutest detail of every vehicle that interested me. Since elementary school I would draw sketches of cars which incorporated technology which were unheard of at that time; novel devices such as electrochromic windshields, HUD displays, and wind turbines which would constantly re-generate electricity for the car. While growing up, my hobbies largely consisted of constructing countless Lego and Meccano sets, and repairing my mom’s 19 year-old car. In middle school, math and science were my favorite subjects: applying science and mathematics to solve real-world problems has fascinated me and I have also taken further steps to reach my goals. By the age of thirteen I devised a scaled model of a heliostat power plant, which successfully powered a light bulb. The mathematics beyond the focus points of parabolic dishes and thermodynamics was very advanced for my age, but I took up the challenge...
Since child I was attracted to science and technology, many of the appliances in my home succumbed to my curiosity. How things work has been something that has always intrigued me. Perhaps this is why I went toward engineering when I finished high school, though, that marked the beginning of a tough stage in my life. In early 2000, after three attempts at three different universities, I had again abandoned my studies. The reasons remain unknown, maybe the youth or lack of experience (maybe both, usually they come together).
I’m an electrical engineer who created the first kind of computer memory without the need for mechanical parts. After that, I started my company, Wang Labs, and I became an entrepreneur in word processors and desktop calculators, both of which were very new at the time. If you didn't know, word processors were primitive computers that could only be used to write. I liked math and science, and was very proficient at them when I was in grade school and barely bothered with the other classes. I even skipped them sometimes, but I always got an A on the exams, which got me through with higher grades.

I remember from my childhood days when my father used to go on a scooter to his office and often ride me to school. He had a dream of buying a car for the family. He experienced a lot of struggle in life. He used to travel in a bus to our neighboring town to teach in a small law school during weekends for extra money. He eventually lived his dream by buying a car for us. He taught me, nothing comes easy in life and struggle never stays forever. You have to be worthy and all it takes is faith, passion and hard work. No wonder, my passion for cars comes from my father.
Mark Minzie, currently pursuing an Engineering Career in the Petroleum Industry at The Pennsylvania State University, where he majors in Petroleum and Natural Gas Engineering. Engineering has been a key interest of mine since childhood. While still in grade school I enjoyed listening to my father, an electrical engineer, teach me about advances in technology, and was always eager to hear more. I was introduced to my first computer at the age of five, and have loved interacting with them ever since. My decision to study engineering as a career was no surprise to those who knew me.
People travel miles in search of their true passion; some find them early in their life and I consider myself lucky enough to be one among them. I found my true calling at the age of 12 on a field trip to a milk factory. I was raised by a mother who dropped out of college after her first semester and a grandmother who only had a third grade education. Both women taught me how important education was and to continue learning as much as I can. Despite raising seven children alone, my grandmother eventually earned her GED and took several college courses to show her children how important education was. My mother returned to college 20 years after dropping out and earned her a Master’s Degree in Human Services. The determination I saw in them is the reason I decided to continue my education and pursue graduate studies. After six years of work experience in the information technology industry, I have finally decided which field I would like to focus on. I’ve always had an interest in programming ever since taking a technology course in high school. I took what I learned in the course and applied it to the earlier social media sites, such as Blackplanet.com and Myspace.com. I realized that this was becoming a hobby as my friends would ask that I create the layouts for their personal pages using HTML.
I took the hardest classes available from my freshmen year on. I loved the challenge and it helped me grow as a student. My senior year I decided not to take an elective so I could take an extra science class. I take both my schools Physics and College Chemistry course along with University of Washington Pre-Calculus. After school I joined my schools Science and STEM clubs. My junior year the two clubs merged I became the Vice President. At our meetings we would discuss science news and conduct experiments. Currently we are working to build a flash light which runs on the heat of ones hand. I also took my schools engineering class. I was able to become very familiar with the program Solid Works. I constructed multiple items; one which I am most proud of is a hand. I used the dimensions of my fingers and palm to created it on the software. It had 46 individual parts. The importance of effective transportation systems cannot be over-emphasized. Many countries face transportation problems and my country Ghana is no exception. I have always dreamed of becoming one of them. For realizing this dream, I started from China 's Jilin University and then joined The University of Manchester for BEng (Hons) Electronic Engineering to take more advanced professional courses. In UoM, I managed to gain GPA of 4.0. Yet, my pursuit of the dream does not end there, since I plan to apply for M.S. program in Electrical and Computer Engineering in the Carnegie Mellon University, where I can receive the best education among the world.
