An Investigation of Literary Greatness: Still a Battle of the Sexes

For most people the mention of "great literature" stirs up the classic images of such authors as Shakespeare, Twain, Hemmingway, Salinger, Fitzgerald, and Melville among many others. Without belittling those very talented authors I would like to question their superiority over lesser acclaimed or widely known authors. What makes great literature and who gets to decide what qualifies? Perhaps a book such as Ahab's Wife by Sena Jeter Naslund could be a "greater" book than its famous precursor, Herman Melville's Moby Dick. But who can one say that one book is greater than another? In the end the question of greatness comes down to who is measuring it.

Perhaps it means to have succeeded gracefully at whatever goal there was in mind. Perhaps it is to be liked by others, or to be meaningful. Perhaps it is represented by being carried on through time. Or perhaps greatness is whatever people make it to be and can never be fully defined. Most likely any or all of those things contribute to
As a precursor, the common understanding needs to be reached that: literature is an art, and has many mediums. Medium is the material or technique with which an artist works (Dictionary.com), for example: photographs, pastels, canvas, paper, ink, etc... There are technical, recreational, and otherwise artistic uses for all mediums. A small child taking pictures of a puppy with a disposable camera, a reporter taking precise pictures of a sporting event, and an artist taking close-up pictures of the dew as it drips off a tree are all different uses of the same medium in photography. Literature can be created with many different intentions and reasons, but the attempt to determine that something is not art based off of the motivation or intentions of the artist is quit meaningless.
"A work of literature must provide more than factual accuracy or vivid physical reality... it must tell us more than we already know." - E. M. Forster. This quote means that the work of literature is more defined and tells us a deeper concept than we already would know. Many other, including I, agree with this quote from E. M. Forster. This quote is true in the books Beowulf and The Great Gatsby because they both provide events and themes that you wouldn't think would happen. These two books also have irony, setting, and conflict to support this quote.

In Young Goodman Brown, Hawthorne tells the story of a young man discovering man's true nature in a fantasized visit to hell. He encounters a world where everyone is equally evil, including the most "holy" of people. Hawthorne's hell is a parallel to the influence of the Church on the real world.
Although the definition of “greatness” varies from each person, I personally think that greatness is someone or something that makes a positive change for good. A great person may break the boundaries and leave change to inspire the future generation. A great invention may redefine the standards of that invention, and make everyday lives more convenient, like the recent evolution of cellular phones. Something full of greatness does not necessarily need to be famous. Something a foot away from you could be full of greatness. Even though you may not realize it, you could be a person full of greatness in someone’s opinion, whether that would be today or in 10 years. An undoubtedly example of a great person is Bobby Orr.
Literature throughout history has evolved due to events occurring during those times. It has changed in a deductive fashion going from creator to creation. In the early times Native Americans wrote myths of how the world had been created, next Puritans wrote of the drama in their communities and how they affected with each other, finally, transcendentalism focused on a singular person's ideas and point of view. It is important to be able to understand all levels of life from broad ideas to a singular person. Understanding not only how the world works but also how to get along with others and who you are as a person is crucial in this society. What makes a book a true classic? Is it in its age, the distinction of its author, the number of copies it sells? I believe it is in none of these things. A true classic is a book that can make you feel, emoting with all of its characters, even the ones you don’t expect to empathize with. Its characters cannot be without faults-they must be as human as the book’s readers, or they will be forgotten as just another character in an endless line of too-perfect protagonists. Any great novel seeks to explore human nature-our morality, our trust in each other, the delicate inner workings of our societies. A classic does more than explore the ways of our world, it exposes them, down to the nitty-gritty bare bones. Throughout history, women have struggled with, and fought against oppression. They have been held back and weighed down by the sexist ideas of a male dominated society which has controlled cultural, economic and political ideas and structure. During the mid-1800’s to early 1900’s women became more vocal and rebuked sexism and the role that had been defined for them. Fighting with the powerful written word, women sought a voice, equality amongst men and an identity outside of their family. In many literary writings, especially by women, during the mid-1800’s to early 1900’s, we see symbols of oppression and the search for gender equality in society. Writing based on their own experiences, had it not been for the works of Susan Glaspell, Kate Chopin, and similar feminist authors of their time, we may not have seen a reform movement to improve gender roles in a culture in which women had been overshadowed by men.
Hemingway was born in Oak Park, Illinois on July 21st, 1899 to his parents, Clarence and Grace Hemingway. His family was wealthy, and would eventually move to a much bigger house with a music studio and a medical office to accommodate their occupational needs. His relationship with his mother was rocky at best, and he complained of her persistence in making him play the cello. In a book written by his sister, she reported that Grace had been obsessed with having twin girls, and had gone as far to dress young Ernest in girl’s clothing and call him “Ernestine”. This went on until he was six years old, and may explain his continuous focus on appearing masculine later in life. His relationship with his mother would set the tone for his future interactions women. He was brought up a man’s man, his father teaching him to hunt, camp, and fish from the very young age of four years old. It is often a topic of argument: What makes a classic? Well because “a classic” can define just about anything, we first will narrow it down. This paper will focus on the field of literature. Still what makes a piece of literature a classic? Well as outline above, the most common criteria for literature tend to focus on language of a novel, a novels appeal to a large audience, and its ability to endure time. These are three basic criteria that are accepted by most critics and I agree with their ability to separate a good novel from a classic one. Now that we know what criteria we are basing our decisions on we must define them clearly so that there isn’t any confusion.
What makes literature so special is the fact that some words never have one rigid definition. What a word truly means is always up for debate, and can be defined differently by all.
