When I interviewed Omaima about her life, I first asked her to describe her the place she lived in when she was young. The way she expressed her memories about the place was interesting. She was happy and excited talking about her best memories in Rod el Farag, a city in Cairo. She remembers this place as the best experienced time in her life. She expressed how these times as she had the best childhood times. Describing her neighborhood, she focused on her home, and how small it was with the amount of people living in it. The house contained ten children living in a very small house, a father, a mother, and a grandfather. The relationship of the family wasn’t contained only inside the house, but around the neighborhood, since the neighborhood
was a small town. The families used to get along with other families around them in the same buildings. Omaima describes the relationship with her neighborhood as a fun and happy memories. They used to get up to the roof and act out a play together. The relationship of the neighborhood was a similar image to a family. As they used to help each other even in a very small issue, as small as killing an insect. Describing this memory, Omaima was laughing remembering how she used to call a neighbor called Samya to come to her house and kill a cockroach. They were scared of the cockroaches, and no one was able to kill it, so their only solution was to call their neighbor. The relationship is so beautiful that it almost gives a vibe that the neighbors were not only people next door, but a family living in the same building. While I was interviewing Omaima, I noticed that she was mentioning her father often while she was describing her family tradition, so I got curious to ask more about tradition and her father.
Throughout her book Mary Pipher, a clinical psychologist, describes the behaviors and relationships of adolescent teen girls. She explores the issues that most of her patients have in common: parents and divorce, depression, weight, drugs, alcohol, violence, and sex. Pipher provides examples of girls who had suffered from each category, and ends with a generalization that connects each situation to a deeper meaning. Although parents and daughters are somewhat to blame in each occasion, Pipher holds the corrupt modern culture of western society accountable. She believes that the idealized image of girls that the media puts out is the root of most adolescent insecurities. In Reviving Ophelia, Pipher draws attention to the increasing need for female teen awareness and incorporates the methods she suggests to the struggling families.
A place which is flawless and is free of sadness, distress, and unhappiness. The story states how there are no conflicts, violence, or negativity in the Omelas society. The author visualizes and describes everything that goes on in the Omelas Society in a really fantasy way and uses persuasive language to convince the audience to believe that whatever is going on is true. The author also shows the joyous celebrations of people for the Festival of Summer. The genre of this story is introduced as to be more of an imagination then being realistic at the beginning. According to the author, “In other streets the music beat faster, a shimmering of gong and tambourine, and the people went dancing. Children dodged in and out, crossing flights, over the music and singing”(Guin 1). The author states that everyone is enjoying the festival, people are happy, and everything is perfect, but changes happiness into
...aves. Olaudah’s story may be seen as a reminder that people in the latest generation have things easy compared to the time he was alive. People should not take what they have for granted, for example freedom. The people of today have the most freedom than ever before.
The emotive language used throughout her memories, show direct contrast to her present situation, as well as her reasons for leaving home. The use of personification, in text such as ‘ the sea roared like an angry beast’, provide emphasis of emotive language, used in describing the estrangement felt. The language is so eloquent, conjuring such engagingly vivid images, of Ziba’s emotions, particularly as she feels the ups and downs of the unforgiving ocean. Through figurative and evaluative language, Ziba is able to depict her past and present feelings and memories. The strong connection between sensory experiences and memory is sophisticated and crisp, making the text straightforward and resonant. The author uses simile’s such as, ‘thoughts of home washed over Ziba like the surge of sea washing over the deck’, linking past and present, creating feelings of loneliness, whilst reflecting on her once peaceful home. The effective use of noun groups - laughter of children, cool mountain air, rich spices of the evening meal - alongside side a number of sensory verbs - thought, felt and smelled - assist and connect the reader to Ziba’s thoughts. Religion, more specifically, Christianity can be seen throughout The Interesting Narrative of the Life of Olaudah Equiano. Religion plays a major role in Equiano’s remarkable journey; that of which can be seen through his personal experiences. Religion plays a significant role in his Narrative and his life overall as he undergoes a spiritual rebirth. This narrative shapes Equiano’s physical move from slavery to freedom and also his journey from sin to salvation.
...though they were happy” (Le Guin 380) shows the reader that the Omelas were happy with their extravagant life. Le Guin states in “The Ones Who Walk Away from Omelas” that the “boys and girls were naked in the bright air” (380). An allusion to the Garden of Eden in biblical times, the nakedness represents the freedom, happiness, and utopian attitude of the people of Omelas.
Olaudah Equiano in his Interesting Narrative is taken from his African home and thrown into a Western world completely foreign to him. Equiano is a slave for a total of ten years and endeavors to take on certain traits and customs of Western thinking. He takes great pains to improve himself, learn religion, and adopt Western mercantilism. However, Equiano holds on to a great deal of his African heritage. Throughout the narrative, the author keeps his African innocence and purity of intent; two qualities he finds sorely lacking in the Europeans. This compromise leaves him in a volatile middle ground between his adapted West and his native Africa. Olaudah Equiano takes on Western ideals while keeping several of his African values; this makes him a man associated with two cultures but a member of neither.
In comparison to other slaves that are discussed over time, Olaudah Equiano truly does lead an ‘interesting’ life. While his time as a slave was very poor there are certainly other slaves that he mentions that received far more damaging treatment than he did. In turn this inspires him to fight for the abolishment of slavery. By pointing out both negative and positive events that occurred, the treatment he received from all of his masters, the impact that religion had on his life and how abolishing slavery could benefit the future of everyone as a whole; Equiano develops a compelling argument that does help aid the battle against slavery. In “The Ones Who Walk Away From Omelas” Ursula K. LeGuin depicts a city that is considered to be a utopia. In this “utopia” happiness revolves around the dehumanization of a young child. The people of Omelas understand their source of happiness, but continue to live on. Oppression is ultimately the exercise of authority or power in a cruel or unjust way. LeGuin demonstrates the oppression that the child of Omelas holds in her story. LeGuin articulates the damaging effects that oppression can cause. Though much emphasis is put on the natural beauty of Omela’s people and its environment, a lot remains to show its darker side which is hidden from the innocence of the kids until they reach the age of 10 (Le, Guin, 65). This is a total contrast to the lovely exhibition of the city and its harmony. It indicates a cruel society that exposes a child of years to unnatural suffering because of utopic beliefs that the success of the town is tied to the kid suffering. Other members of the town leave Omela in what seems like the search for an ideal city other than Omela. But do they get it?

In life, people live in moments that later become great memories that they look back at and smile about. At the same time, people also experiences memories of undergoing hardships and unfortunate events that may cause them distress and trauma. In Joy Kogawa's novel about a family of Japanese Canadians, Obasan, it is seen that traumatizing experiences that one faces can carry a burden on them for the remainder of their lifetime. This is conveyed through internal conflicts faced by various characters in the story, the style the story is written in, and the setting the story takes place in.
People in society strive to find happiness in ones self, others and their community. What factors are there to obtain ultimate happiness in one’s life? What ethical decisions does one have to overcome to obtain this supreme happiness that every individual endeavours? The citizens of Omelas have a difficult time achieving the goal of making the right ethical decision. In exchange for their ultimate happiness and success, is one child’s misery. In order to live their “perfect” lives the citizens of Omelas must accept the suffering of the child. To make the right ethical decision is difficult, but necessary to end the injustice of the society. Failing to overcome the ethical issues in the city of Omelas is displayed through three different characters in the story. There are those who choose to ignore the situation, those who observe the child in misery, and those who feel that they must walk away. In the story “The Ones Who Walk Away from Omelas” characters fail to overcome the ethical issues in their society, and the reader is taught the importance of moral responsibility and the implications of the difficult task to make the right ethical decision.
The Olaundah Equiano narrative is a view of servitude from a former captive himself. He begins his story in Africa from the land of Esska, his native homeland. He describes his tribe and all the many traditions they practiced as a way of living. Equiano was not originally born into servitude but a free male, son of a chief. Equiano’s life in Africa was common among the many members of his tribe. He was strongly attached to his mother and clenched to her as much as possible. His father obtained many slaves himself, but treated them like an equal part of the family. Equiano lived a common life in African society, until one day his destiny took an unexpected turn for the worst and life would never be the same.
