Imagine that you are in the middle of an important lecture during history at 2:00 p.m. and you are fighting to stay awake. As you look around the room, you feel that you are the only that is having a difficult time maintaining your alertness. Well, you’re not alone. Sleepiness and fatigue is a very problematic issue for many Americans. When they become tired, they can’t seem to find a way to defeat it. This can get in the way of their jobs, schoolwork, and extracurricular activities. One thing that many Americans don’t know is that afternoon naps can solve their problems. People should take naps because it is very beneficial for their mental and physical health. Naps can increase one’s productivity, help them to improve their cognitive performance, and allow them to recharge themselves.
Naps can do many things for our bodies, and one of them is that it increases our productivity. In today’s world of work, people are always finding new ways increase their performance. According to Dr. Daniel Vesslor, M.D., ten to twenty minute catnaps can increase one’s work rate (Source 3). Naps are similar to the cup of coffee that people drink in the morning and on the job to keep themselves working. For example, every day my mom consumes a lot of coffee. Since she works a night shift, she is often sleep deprived. The daily cup of coffee helps keep her alert and awake. This leads to her being more productive. In just a couple sips of coffee, my mom is ready to go. This can symbolize when we take naps. Although they take up a short amount of time, they give us energy to go beyond the time that we took to nap. Just the simple ten to twenty minute catnap can help increase productivity.
