An Analysis of Jean Toomer's Cane
In the prose fiction Cane: Jean Toomer uses the background of the Black
American in the South to assist in establishing the role of the modernist
black writer. While stylistic characteristics such as ambiguity of words and
the irony of the contradictory sentences clearly mask this novel as a
modernist work. Toomer draws upon his experiences and his perspective of
the life of Blacks in Georgia to create a setting capable of demonstrating
the difficulties facing the twentieth-century Black author. This
presentation is both vivid and straightforward and while acknowledges the
fall of slavery, it also examines the after-effects which remain in American
life. The effects of racism in U.S. history have made the job of defining
Black culture particularly difficult, Toomer however, remains on of the first
black authors who addresses the issue of a post slavery society. The text
itself presents numerous references regarding Toomer's beliefs that the past
inspires the modern writer. However, the focus remains on the present
situation of Blacks in America and not their history. One of the most
interesting aspects in his work proves to be his use of prose, structure, and
character to draw upon his Black heritage to demonstrate how history does
affect the modern Black. By incorporating history in to these parts of the
novel, Toomer offers a definite role for Blacks in the twentieth century.
Throughout the novel specific textual references, exemplify Toomer's
dependence upon Black heritage in providing the inspiration necessary in
identifying Black culture. Critic Robert Bone writes:

...if this balance between the past
and the ideas for the future can be achieved then there will come about a
stronger more identifiable modern Black culture that does not add to
segregation, but adds to American culture. This hope is clear in his poem
"November Cotton Flower."
Old folks were startled, and it soon assumed
Significance. Superstition saw
Something it had never seen before.
Brown eyes that loved without a trace of fear,
Beauty so sudden for that time of year. (Pg6)
The thing that superstition, "had never seen before" is the dawn of a modern
Black culture, which embodies the elements of the history of Black Americans
while relieving them of the hardships and the suppression of the Old South.
Judging from the number of Black authors who were inspired by Toomer, he
might just have been at the birth of this new Black culture.
There are different people in this world, from varying extremes, some come are timid in their ways and like to stay to themselves, some are outgoing and the popular type that like to be in the center of attention and go to parties. And then I feel that there is a third type of person, a person that understands what he needs to do, when it needs to be done, and gets things done no matter the type of hardship one would face to see such things finish out. I am talking about people that live their lives with valor, courage, and braveness. This brings me to a few questions that I believe a few people would ask about the movie “True Grit”, the courage Mattie possessed was it physical, moral, or both; would I be one to describe Rooster as a brave man; and with a change of main character from the 1969 version to the 2010 version is there a difference in who the story believes has “grit”.

The synergy model is the framework to the CCRN certification program and is also noted to be required for Magnet designation (AACN, n.d.; Hardin, 2013). Being an intensive care nurse (who is also CCRN certified), this model is frequently seen in protocols that are used and as an APN, the synergy model will continue to be ultilized in the practice as an acute care nurse practitioner.
One of the main themes the series projects onto society is the misrepresentation of extravagant dates. In 2013 OK magazine ran an article highlighting some of the most lavish dates from bachelor Sean Lowes season. The number one date was called the “The pretty women date,” Sean took Leslie H. shopping on Rodeo drive, where she was gifted a new dress, shoes purse and to top it off a one hundred and twenty carat diamond necklace from Neil Lane. This is a prime example of the unrealistic tendencies that run amuck in this series. It is unrealistic to even believe when going on a first date with someone they will buy you anything, let alone a multimillion dollar necklace. The over the top nature gives society a false image of dating. Gabrielle Frank a writer for Women’s Health Magazine recalled an unfathomable date from season fourteen with Jake Pavelka, “Jake kicked off this extreme date by picking Vienna up from the Bachelor mansion in a helicopter. Next stop: the San Gabriel Mountains, where they were bound together and physically shaken, then forced to bungee jump off of a bridge overlooking a river.” This type of date is a staple for the bachelor. Helicopter rides to glamorous location are not seen as anything more than transportation. The producers use this same extreme take again and again, season after season making it appear to be no big deal. The
The rage of Grecian hero Achilles stands at the forefront of the Homeric epic “Iliad.” During the tenth year of the Trojan War, Achilles must weigh his value of honor with his value of survival at four points throughout the epic; first when Agamemnon takes away Bryseis, second when Agamemnon tempts him into battle with gifts, third when Patroclus dies, and finally when King Priam attempts to ransom for Hector’s body back.
Since Deaf culture doesn’t have specific food, clothing, or music associated with its people, there is a focus usually on material culture. These are things like TTYs (text telephone), flashing lights, close captions, and interpreters. Material culture can be paintings or pictures that the Deaf community can relate to. “Some Deaf artist feel that visual art can be a ‘way of life’ among Deaf people and a part of Deaf culture in the same manner that music is a way of life among the hearing society. Visual art can enlighten Deaf and hearing observers by presenting experiences reflective of a Deaf person’s world view. This, in turn, can strengthen a Deaf observer’s sense of identity within the Deaf Culture” (Miller 1989 pg.
Usually on reality shows, life is made to look easy. Often times dinner, laundry, and the household chores are all taken care of for the reality stars. This is not a luxury that most people have. These shows also make love look easy. For example, on the competitive reality show, The Bachelor, one man is supposed to find the love of his life through dating twenty-five women in only six weeks. These dates are not typical. The bachelor and the women go on extravagant dates all around the world as if they are living in a dream. Also, in real life, marriage is not a required end result of dating for only six weeks. M...
In the novel ‘Far from the Madding Crowd’ the main female role, Bathsheba Everdene, is pursued by three suitors, each of whom is very different from the others. These three men are Farmer William Boldwood, owner of the farm adjacent to Bathsheba’s, Gabriel Oak, bankrupt farmer who becomes Bathsheba’s shepherd, and later, bailiff, and Sergeant Francis Troy, a soldier whose regiment was close by to Weatherbury.
In the United States culture is so broad that it cannot be depicted with ease, it is a melting pot of hundreds of cultures considering there are so many immigrants. The struggles and hard effort people put into their daily lives all contribute to the vibrancy and uniqueness of the immigrant culture. This culture has produced a bountiful amount of self taught people with unique knowledge, an interesting past, and a thriving future. Amy Tan’s article Mother Tongue and Malcolm X’s article A Homemade Education provide ample examples of what it is like to live as an immigrant, as well as examples of the struggle of living in a place where you are provided with little resources; the immigrant culture can be filled with tough undertakings, the main one being education, but those struggles mold people to know how to get over feats in life.

The silence crawls back over the seats into the passenger side. I zip my flannel jacket up and grab the plastic flowers, the rosary from my visor, and a thermos full of black coffee. Opening the heavy door of Beb I step onto the crunchy ground. The cemetery is barren. No flowers, no visitors. A cat bird cries out from a pine tree and the wind causes the chain link fence to “click, click, click.” My feet crunch as I walk upon the fallen leaves to the headstone of my grandparents and sit down cross legged. Grass has grown back where my Grandma lay, but a few bald spots…...I pour some of the coffee onto the dirt. I take a swig myself of the pure black coffee. ...nd study the future may bring. This project could be good for student if we spend more time on this written and study about forecasting different objective and goal.
A quote I heard many times when I was in high school and which I now know traces back to Sir Francis Bacon, one of our earliest scientist or philosophers as they were then called, is the statement "Knowledge Is Power." Today, I believe that the fuller, more correct statement is to say, "the application of knowledge is power." The study of science, and technology subjects will broader our opportunities in life. As we continue to advance through the 21st century we are well aware that technology is possibly the hottest industrial commodity around the world today. In the years ahead, it will be an increasingly critical factor in determining the success or failure of businesses. It is the fuel many of us are looking at to help us win this race to the 21st century. To do that, we should make technology matter. In this paper I am going to share my technology forecasts. I try to focus on my new forecasts a decade into the future - the first decade of the 21st century, because that is how far most businesses need to be looking ahead.

Understanding the past and changing the future don’t they depend on each other? Maybe it is a stupid question but a debatable question. Do we change the future by developing new things or by working on the old ones which went wrong in the past, the past policies or experiments may have turned out to be bad but when you think of it haven’t they provided us with the t...
